FWIW I got 12 different people to switch to Mac and they all love it and wish they'd of done it sooner. No offense to the OP but it sounds like he didn't even try to learn it if he's sending it back the same day.

Agreed. Less than a day is not near enough to find out its differences.

I would recommend against Dell XPS gaming systems. We ordered 60 of those for a client who needed a gaming center set up and every single one died within a month. All had bad ram and over half had bad video cards. Granted thats not normal even for crappy PC manufacturers but for sixty machines to go in a month is pretty rotten odds.

I seriously doubt that. All 60 machines? Give it up. I work at a school and we have a ton of dells and never a issue with any of them period. Xps machines are high quality machines and this is from experience not from a fanboy like yourself.

W7 has totally caught up to OS X. It's only the manufactures' bloatware that ruins PCs.

Yes and no. Microsoft can still shaft up the OS at times. I had a nice personal stability record going until I downloaded a few Windows Updates.

It wasn't until googling after I got my PC to recover from blue screening at the update process they had to be installed in a certain way. Microsoft didn't lay that out on Windows Update.

That sounds pretty closed minded to me.

Windows 7 is definitely an improvement over previous iterations, but it's still Windows and reflects Microsoft's OS design philosophy. It's intrusive, bloated, and impedes the user.

In the absence of OS X, would I use it? Maybe. It's a toss up between that and the various (and improving) Linux offerings.

But thankfully that's not the world we live in. :D

It is a nice OS but having used Vista for so long it feels like I'm still on Vista but the quickness of Windows 7. I only keep it for gaming.

So who do you think makes the best all in ones, IYHO ?

i hate that whole category too be honest. i think all all in ones suck. id rather have a tower + nice monitor any day. Esp. b.c im looking for max performance for what i do.

I also think 23" monitors are the perfect compromise between size and quality. IMHO 27" is too big. I love my 2 monitor 23" setup. Thinking about adding a 3rd soon.

BTW i agree with most here. I don't like W7 much. Its an acceptable compromise for the beastly performance i get out of my desktop. But im still thinking making it a hackintosh. Nothing beats mac os. i do my most average day to day stuff on the '11 mbp 13". Im thinking about switching to the mba tho since i dont need the computing power on my laptop. Desktop does the important stuff.

Nothing beats mac os.

At least Apple has been refining their UI over the years. Microsoft doesn't know where it's going. Fisherprice, then glass, still aero with a new taskbar for 7 and some subtle window refinements.

The icons for Windows 7 still feel dated. I don't know what it is about them but something still feels old about it.

Photoshop on Windows is just butt ugly. I still detest the fact that the menubar is on every window. Yet I was more of a PC person than Mac but OS X has grew so much on me at times that Windows to some degree feels alien to me. At the same time Windows doesn't feel alien to me. Plus I'm so sick of going for cmd on the PC and it's friggin alt! Then where alt is it's the bloomin windows key!

Ah, so if someone has issues they're a fanboy? I used to work for a university IT department – we had dozens of Dell laptops that we used and in any given week half of them were down with some sort of issue. Dell makes great monitors – I have two – but I'd never buy one of their computers.

I think you are losing your thread to people with lots of time on their hands and plenty of rusty old axes to grind.[/QUOTE]

I agree, glad you. Got it fixed though.

Cheers, Macjim.

Yeah, seems a little exaggerated... Perhaps it's something environmental, not with the machines themselves.

It's not out of the realm of possibility, but would indicate a problem with a particular lot of parts from one manufacturer.

I've seen raid setups with 3 and sometimes 5 drives where all drives failed within a couple hours. They were all bought from the same place at the same time and were the same brand. If there was a manufacturing quality issue with serial number X05R60781, there's likely going to be the same problem with X05R60782, X05R60783 and X05R60784 too.

*60* seems a bit high, and there may be something environmental that was contributing/triggering the problems too, but if they were all ordered at the same time and built at the same place with the same set of parts, it's plausible.

when i did my AVID training (was the cheapest way to get the avid software ) we had MacPro's about 25 of them and there was not one day we did not need a apple techy to come around to repair at very least one of them as they either would not even turn on or mysteriously lost one processor or ram failed constantly or could not be accessed ..so the "just works " was then a thing of the past and those MacPros had just been 1.5 and the oldest 2 years old
but they had 15 Dell Precision T7500 which always worked and never did need any help by a techy from dell

and if you look closely through all the forum there is not a single Mac in the range without any problems
so a dell cant be worse , but after all cost far less
and if you noticed in recent years more and more run mainly windows on their Mac's
a Mac from once being a supercomputer in the ppc days , is degraded to be only a status symbol so people can show what they can afford and function has to follow the design ...which does not work as Mac's proof it

I agree with you. All my mac at home are very good.... well except for Aperture crashing randomly, and occasional beachball. Though my eperience at work is completely different, we have a large assortment of Macs and they have about as much issues as the PC users. I work on a Dell and a macpro, and the Dell give me less problems. I still much prefer to use a Mac at home unless I am gaming.

OK I was able to download updates. I unplugged from my router, and plugged the imac directly into the cable modem. Just to see if that made a difference, and it did. :D I'm gonna have to plug the imac into the wireless router again, because well I need too. I didn't put the router installation setup disc onto the imac. Just plugged it into the router. Do you think that was the problem? I do want to stress how thankful I am to the people on this board.

it sounds like you have some wireless security settings on the router that are filtering info to your iMac. Just double check your settings (wireless band, ports open / closed. There is a pretty good chance that you have that connection filtered.

I am sort of in the same boat. I got the 27" iMac and am looking at returning it. But not because of the computer, but instead the screen. The 27" is just too big. Not physically, but I just having problems seeing text.

I have tried everything I can think of from reducing the resolution to 1920x1200 to increasing the text size. Increasing the text size works to a degree but is not the end all, beat all. For example, on Firefox, I can increase the size of the content, but not the text on the tabs. They are just too hard to see. A 24" monitor seems to be my sweet spot.

I have had the 27" for a week and I have until Saturday to return it, (does anyone know if I can send a computer purchased at a store directly back to Apple? Yes I know I would have to pay shipping, but that would be cheaper than paying gas for the 2 hour drive back to the store)

So I will just keep using my new MBP and wait and see what the Mini looks like after a refresh and maybe look at getting a MP.

Now i'm not wanting to get shot down in flames here but.........

In a semi impulse buy last Thursday i bought myself an entry lvl 21" Imac , my first venture into the Mac World from my local PC World store here in the UK.

Now i know PC World , maybe not the best thing to do in the first place but i have been looking at getting a Mac for the last few weeks after seeing a neighbours in action. Basically fell in love with the screen more than anything else :)

I was trying to decide instore whether to just buy a replacement lap top or a desk top pc when i saw their Apple section which had all the new range on display. I had sort of ruled out the Mac as i have no experince with the OS and i couldn't just buy a new machine on looks alone could i?....well i did :)

Now i'm not exactly regreting it as the OP has and i am trying to get to grips with it but maybe i should have been a tad more restrained lol.

Does anyone know if Apples 14 day refund policy only applies to machines bought either direct from them or in an Apple store? I'm assuming if bought from a third party such as PC World or Amazon this option does not apply?

I'm not set on getting rid of it , i am going to perservere but i'm finding after decades of pc use my Winows mind set is well "set" more than i thought it would be.
I'm also going to have to buy a copy of Windows 7 for bootcamp as i'm really wanting to play the upcoming Star Wars MMO (another £100 or so) but i'm not a big gamer so i thought i would get by on the Mac for just general browsing , photo and video work.

I can't easily put into words why i'm swaying more back to a pc it's just this niggling thing in the back of my mind i dont get when i buy a new pc.

Don't get me wrong the Screen is a thing of beauty and my desk has never looked so tidy with the wireless KB and mouse and i may well over time get well used to it as many switchers have but i'm feeling if i have a get out clause i might want to use it :(

Any advice appreciated.

New iMac

Dude, my advice? Keep it for a few days, and see how you get on. I have just bought my first mac and i love it!
- Yes the magic mouse takes some getting used to, but give it 2 days and it is all good :)
- The OS is very different from windows, but i prefer it to be honest. I am not a comp geek, and i have managed to learn it. So it should be no problem for most people
- The design is just wow! looks lovely on my desk, and it is being prepped up as a media hub for the house (get air mouse ifyou have an iphone to add to the geek factor!).
- Buuuuuuuuut, i am not a gamer, but i figured i would try some games out to see what the iMac can do. There are not many around, might be worth bootcamping if you ae into that. Guys, if you have any recommedations on which ones are good, i would be very thankful. Age of Empires 3, maybe?

Welcome to the World of the Mac. :)

My advice would be to upload some photos into iPhoto (use the SD slot under the DVD slot), transfer some home movies into iMovie, have a play with iDVD and generally see how well all the applications mesh together to provide a seamless multi-media experience.

You don't need a degree, just play with the apps and look on it as a giant sandbox. Above all, spend time with it, be patient learning a new way of working and wait for the 'lightbulb' moment when it all suddenly makes so much sense.

Spotlight. When I used Win7 last year on a Netbook it still had the horrible Windows search feature. Spotlight is a much better search application.

Has Windows incorporated a back up system on par with Time Machine yet?

After that you have just the general usability of the OS, which OS X excels at.

Ahh PC World.

Probably not the best way to start your experience. :D

I love my Mac but getting the trackpad transformed the experience even more. For the first time in a ever i could actually interact with PC.

Its a tough change but don't give up. Its a learning period!

hmmm pcworld.... If there is no Apple store near you, then order online. If you are not happy they will arrange for a courier from your place to pick it up.

EasyFind for mac > Spotlight. Not sure what's best for Win7 though. I don't like TimeMachine because:

1) it saves old archives, which I consider a security risk - I only want one backup of everything ("SuperDuper" does a nice job of this)
2) the recovery interface is tedious. We should be able to select one or two checkboxes then press a button, not take a journey into outer space...

Also for some reason I need to run "killAll Finder" in the Terminal before entering TM, or else it lags several minutes.

I have serious doubts there is a better search program than Spotlight, but if there is I'll be mightily impressed. I'll download EasyFind when I get home and give it a shot.

i thought this was going to be another yellow tint thread, lolz.

but seriously, i agree that a day isn't enough time. it took me so long to convince my dad to make the switch. about a year ago he caved and got a MBP, found a way to get all of his windows-specific stuff working, and now says he'd never go back.

i've never set up bootcamp with windows, but a friend of mine does it all the time and i've never heard anything bad about it.

I didn't notice. In fact I noticed the opposite. And there are statistics to back it up that PC and Windows market share is shrinking and OSX is growing. Windows remains the dominant. But hey, there are a lot more fools in the world than smart people :p J/k hehe
