I would really like to test this out for the 14 day period. If I decide to return it, Apple will do a full refund no questions asked? Not that I plan to, but what if god forbid I drop the device, then I would have to keep it? What about a hairline scratch on the back from lying it down on a table?

I've owned an iPad 1, iPad 3, iPad Air, and now own an iPad Air 2. I've never abused Apple's return policy but for the Pro, I'm just not certain if I want one and need the 14 day period.

Personally, I was in your situation except that I really wanted it... planned to use it often and for many things. But just had a very frustrating experience with it. Love my Air2 so much more.

If you're not sure, why not check it out at the Apple Store for a bit first? Yes, if you order it, you can return it. But as you mentioned, you also risk dropping it... and it is an awkward beast to hold. That's mainly why I returned mine after 3 days... just knew I had much more risk of dropping it or something happening.

I played with it in the Apple Store but it doesn't give a true representation of my daily use. For example I usually use my iPad sitting on the couch or lying in bed with the screen on my stomach.

Those are good questions. I was curious myself so I searched their web site. The return policy says "for any undamaged product." In other respects their service is very good, so maybe they'll overlook small cosmetic damages. I suggest you ask Apple directly, either over the phone or at your local Apple store.

I normally don't buy extended warranties, but AppleCare+ includes free phone support and up to two accident incidents with a $49 deductible each. So I think I'll be getting it.

My receipt says return date is January something. Holidays I guess.

Yep. January 8 for those who buy stuff as Christmas gifts, so the recipients can return them. And those of us buying things for ourselves get the same extension. At least that's the case here in the U.S. I don't know if that's world-wide.

Yep. That's how I use mine. And I hated using the iPP that way. I felt it would function much better on a stand on a desk. But YMMV.

That's interesting you should say that because that's why I went ahead and just bought a rMBP. I almost always hold my iPad Air 2 so the iPad Pro would be cumbersome. Plus now I have a full featured laptop.

Yeah that's the thing

Would I use the pro any different than the air? The answer is no which is why it's not worth the extra price.

Others though have difference needs and use it more

While the iPP is awkward to hold, I find that sitting on an easy chair with it in my lap is not uncomfortable at all, and the big, clear screen and improved speakers more than make up for any slight awkwardness.

Returned mine yesterday. It truly felt like a useless product to me personally. It's gorgeous and the speakers are fantastic, but the Air 2 and Mini 4 are much more comfortable to actually use, while a retina MacBook/Air/Pro are much more productive. In the week I had the Pro I only picked it up twice. Getting things done on a Mac or smaller iPad was just more efficient.

It's not a bad product, but it's a bit too niche.

I'm starting to miss mine. Web browsing in portrait mode was really really nice. I don't know if that is worth a grand, but it was really sweet, and a completely different experience than my rmbp which now seems constricted.

I'm beginning to develop ideas of going back to the Apple store and taking advantage of the extended return period to try it longer.

Well, after playing XCom and Infinity Blade on it for days, my Air 2 seems puny and small by comparison. It is indeed heavier and not as comfortable to use. But I'd rather go big or go home...

haha - I read this just fast enough where I thought you'd said...

"It's rather big and best used at home" (the IPP)

With that I agree for sure! :)

Exactly!

I agree, it really isn't a "bad" product. But it is very niche. I agree with you too... I had the Pro and found myself not wanting to pick it up and use it, but rather pickup my Air2. That's when I knew, ok I need to return this.

Returned mine.

And doing so was quite surprising, actually, since I was convinced during the years of rumours and speculation that a larger, Surface-sized iPad would be exactly what I wanted. I have always seen the iPad is my one "free" upgrade that I let myself make every year without any hesitation (I use them so frequently that it's my #1 tech toy, hands-down) so I was fully prepared to buy and keep it. Never thought I wouldn't like it.

It almost feels as if it's just an inch/inch-and-a-half too big. I want something beyond the dimensions of 9.7" but 12.9" seems to be too much. Odd statement probably but I couldn't help holding and thinking...just a little smaller and it would be perfect.

I will admit that the stylus was never a consideration and would never be something I used so that fact alone puts me on the outside, so to speak, of the targeted user. If I wanted that extra functionality that didn't exist before, I can see my reaction being different.

I also did not notice any discernible improvement in speed, fluidity, or power over the Air 2.

So, in the end, there just wasn't quite enough for me to warrant the price tag.

But it's a damn nice piece of tech from a design point of view.

I'm exactly in your camp - Same scenario.

That was my precise take away also. Oddly enough I'm now pining for the 11.5-12" device I think *would* be perfect for my "bigger iPad desire"- haha

I was also surprised by this. I think all the extra power likely went to driving the display, because it felt remarkably the same as my iPad Air 2, as you mentioned.

When after just a few days of the IPP around the house, I found myself always wanting to grab the Air 2 instead, I knew it was time to return the IPP.

I doubt I will be returning mine. I have until mid January to try it out but at the moment it is a stayer.
Must admit that the trusty Air 2 is the one I use all the time but the big beast does get a look in for relaxed movies, speakers are very good, and other occasional use.
Would have been nice to have got the pencil and keyboard at the same time rather than some random date in mid to late December.
The iPP is not bad if you accept its just a bigger iPad. Expensive for what it is but what the hell, it's a new Apple toy!

Its officially been a week with mine, and I am definitely going to keep it.

In a work environment, it hasn't yet made me more productive. Still use VMware to log into my remote desktop where I have full access to all of my full version productivity tools. Having the larger screen has been nice, but there has been 2 occasions where the 2nd monitor support would have helped me. Trying to teach myself to take hand-written notes on the iPad vs. using traditional pen and paper. Still trying to break old habits, but I do see the value in it. Sent my handwritten notes that I generated on the iPad to my admin to type up... the feedback I received was that it was more streamlined and easy to archive. I've yet to generated any notes outside of my office, but I imagine I can get them typed up quickly when I am offsite. Previously I had to type them up myself or wait till I got back to the office.

I did perform one presentation and it was interesting. I liked the presentation tools, but I did find it a little awkward to hold such a big device while I was giving the presentation. So, I ended up putting it down as a display prompter. It worked well in that particular venue, but not sure that it would work all the time. Part of the issue was that I wasn't very well prepared for the presentation.

For personal use, it has been fantastic. Me and my 19 month old have been drawing and playing games. Its been fun to see him drawing on the iPad. The pencil works great even with little toddlers. He will sit in my lap to watch some Mickey Mouse Clubhouse while I check some emails/browse. The Air was just too small for that. Watched a few episodes of Walking dead on a plane trip, which worked well. I setup at a retreat to watch the Seahawks game last Sunday night, the larger screen was welcomed as 5 of us huddled around the iPad with some food and beer. The speakers really shined during game night.

Interesting note on this...I sure hope we see some iPP specific layouts for video apps that put the video aligned with the top/bottom and make better use of the space above/below the video when maximized.

It's frustrating to have a huge 16:9 video right dab smack vertically centered with dead black space above and below that could be optionally used for stats or other angles or scores, etc
