I love the product. The size is great for me as I have never owned or tried any iPad before this one to compare. I don't bring my Macbook Pro home from work anymore. But I do admit the IPP might be useless for my upcoming photoshoots. I mainly bought it for drawing - but still have no Apple Pencil.

I haven't used my iPad Air 2 till yesterday since the release of the Pro which I have been using daily.

The iPad Air 2 is now like the iPad Mini, lol.

But going back to the Air was so much more comfortable and less awkward to use and I don't have a keyboard for it, the internal one was fine typing on my lap.

HHHMMMM, I think my Pro is in trouble.
All I have to do is open up Safari on my Air 2 to remember why I've been enjoying my Pro so much. Split another app onto the screen and I'm reaching for my Pro. The only thing I think I prefer my Air 2 for is iBooks.

I got the i5 256gb model. So far I have 2 issues with the Surface. The battery life is supposed to be 9 hours but I can only seem to get around 6 if I'm lucky. This is the biggest issue I have. The second issue is I get a notification about the graphics driver not responding but as soon as I get the notification I get an immediate notification it has been resolved. It's more annoying than anything else. I did get the pencil and it was great but not a vast difference from the Surface pen.

Did you turn back ground apps off?

I believe by default, Windows 10 has all its apps running in the back ground, which drains tons of battery.

You have to go into settings and select what you want to run...atleast doing that increased my battery by a few hours, when I had my SP3.

Sorry, I no longer have my SP3 so I can't remember where exactly the option was, but if you google it, I'm sure you'll find it.

These things that are issues for you should have been obvious before you bought it. note that they aren't issues for many others.

I will be returning my iPad pro. I find using it casually is a frustrating experience. It's too big and heavy for enjoying content comfortably. The size is really awkward to hold or sit it in my lap. As for it replacing my laptop, I had high hopes there too. I know it's still iOS and limited. I guess I was hoping for some tweaks to utilize the screen real estate better, but it doesn't. A lot of wasted screen space. Furthermore, iOS is still too simple and bare to function and multitask like a laptop. Probably by iOS 11 they'll have this figured out. The multitasking albeit a step in the right direction, is still somewhat of a joke. Also, the tracking (with my finger) didn't feel hardly at all improved. (Does the Pencil improve tracking?) I tried it on my iPad Air 2 and maybe the the iPP had the slightest bit better tracking, but it still lags quite a bit.

Sad. I really thought I'd love it. Maybe in a few years when iOS matures and the iPP is thinner and lighter.

Not saying there isn't great use for many people with it. This is just my opinion and thought it might help anyone on the fence.

Mine is going back = Just a little too big, just a little too heavy. Also too expensive for what it is today.

Since the first ipad I've wanted a bigger and lighter tablet. Ipad 2 gave me the lighter tablet but ipad air hit all the right marks. Having owed the IPP since launch I can say it is the best ipad to date but not worth nearly £1000 to me right now.

- Yes, the pencil is the best stylus on the market today. Suck it Wacom, your time of milking the market is over! Using procreate is great as it has good layer control but hoping for more powerful apps going forward.
- Yes the device is beautifully made and the screen is top notch.
- Yep, the speakers are also much improved making this a great entertainment device.
- Yes the full size on screen keyboard is awesome.

But.....
- it's too fatiguing to hold so it always need propping up. This is negative to me as I'm so used to moving around with my ipad air.
- the cases cost so much for polyurethane and I feel Apple are price gouging me because I need to protect my device. Yes it's my choice to buy these cases but I'm not going to get over the cost vs the value.
- the glaringly bad design choices! No where to store the pencil or its cap? No stand built in and only one angle on the smart cover. C'mon just steal the best element from the surface pro already!
- the size means you have so much light being blasted into your eyes when you try to use this like a regular ipad. Say your laying in bed and have the tablet on you stomach to read and hold comfortably , because the screen is huge and close to your face there is a lot of light directed at you it feels like your in a tanning booth!
- the cost is too damn high. Until iOS matures for this device it's still just a jumbo ipad. If it was £600, no problem it would replace my IPA as an upgrade. But at £800 it needs to more special, have more control. Really I want it to have more features like a full OS. I'm not wanting it to be like a surface pro as Windows 10 still doesn't make for a good tablet experience but split screen is not enough, I'd prefer to have true multitasking so I can use my device how I want. For example, have two safari browsers open at once!

If I was a full time artist or photographer this tablet would pay for itself just as a tool to show of my trade to clients. As a drawing tablet this should be your choice over a Wacom Cintiq. As just a tablet for consuming content, just get an ipad air 2.

I wanted this device to be an upgrade to my IPA, to be my full size comic reader (and it's great for that if the comic is true HD), to be my full time tablet to consume content. But I wanted more and the quality of the pencil and size of the screen is not enough to make it worth keeping for me, it's not worth twice the price of its little brother.

The platform will advance, the apps will update. Hopefully it will drop a little weight and bezel size and come version 2, maybe 3, this will be a must have tablet. Fingers crossed for ipad air 3 with pencil support.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now to prepare myself for the inevitable feeling I've made the wrong choice, feel like I'm missing the size and quality device that is the ipad pro. Change my mind and end up wanting to own one again!

So i got my pencil the other day and after 2 days using it, i can honestly say i kind of hate it! Now, before everyone gets the pitchforks and hangman's noose ready, give me a moment to explain.

The soul reason i purchased the iPad pro was to get into digital artwork. I used to do a lot of sketching and have some minor training from back in high school (class of 2001) in commercial arts, and id love to draw and ink stuff all day long in class.

Ive been told I'm a great sketch artist (although i think I'm average at best) and being a fan of movies and games and comics, I've always loved seeing the design and concept art to those things and would love to try my hand at it, even if it was just a hobby.

For years, I've searched high and low for the perfect device to use for it. I purchased a compaq tablet laptop years before the first iPad thinking it would work, it didn't. I went though several Wacom bamboo tablets, and they all worked fine, i just couldn't get comfortable as hard as i tried to draw and look at a screen as i did it, there was way to much of a disconnect for me to do much of anything.

I looked at multiple tablets across the whole range of platforms (Microsoft surface, android, iPads) and for media consumption i always stuck with the iPad line and had almost every iteration of them since the beginning.

In my mind, they were the best tablets despite others offering more features, and i always stuck it out with them.

Early this year, i purchased an iPhone 6plus and to be honest, it basically replaced my IPad Mini 2 32gig. So all year i followed the rumors of an IPad pro, expecting id be happier with a bigger screen and the capability to draw on it.

I saved up for months and when the time came, i was eager to click that purchase button the moment i could.

The iPad pro came, i unboxed it on youtube and for the most part really like it, but i have to be honest, its not really doing much more then my current iPhone 6 does with the exception of split screen apps, the drawing stuff, and of course a bigger better screen and processor.

So i figured, ok, this will really come to life when i finally get my pencil, and it finally arrived, and within 20 minuets of using it...I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT!

Dont get me wrong. Its easily the best stylus I've ever used. It feels good in the hand, it has no real lag time that i can tell, The tilt to shade thing is what sold me over what Microsoft was offering, etc.

I hated the way it charges. I think that was beyond stupid and personally i think Johnny Ives should be ashamed of himself for that one! Thats a huge accident waiting to happen! Also the lack of an eraser and on the Pro itself lack of force touch wreaks of pure "Save it until the next one to sell even more" greed on apples part.

Whats worse, and this is no fault of the tablet or the pencils, is drawing on glass feels so weird, such a huge disconnect that its in a way repulsing and even on some level nauseating to me personally.

I dont know what it is! Maybe its such a strong muscle memory or subconscious thing, but the more i force myself to use it the more i absolutely loath the experience and its such a disappointment to me!

It really feels like I'm trying to draw on ice, and no matter how hard i try i cant control it like i can with good old fashion pen and paper and there is just this disconnect between me and the art if that makes any sense.

Its like no matter how good the app, I'm fighting the program to convey the image from my brain through my hand through the tablet, and it just feels so unnatural it really is somewhat repulsing to me on some level.

It makes me not want to do digital art at all outside of light photoshop touch ups or what have you and sure as hell cant justified spending over $1100 for something i hate using for the reason i bought it for.

It even makes me not want to really get a standard iPad at all either yet. My phone (the 6plus, not the s model) handles everything fine. I can lay in bed with it, i can read with it, i can bring it with me, etc.

The pro just seems overkill to me, and most people at this point and price, especially without the force touch feature the 6s line has and the lack of an eraser if you can actually use the pencil without it feeling so awkward.

I hate to do it, and i love apple, i still think they make the best computers around, but this whole thing was a huge letdown.

it doesn't do much better then a standard iPad in terms of apps or functionality, and in no way will it ever replace a full fledge pc, and having learned the hard way, digital artwork while amazing to look at and opens so many more possibilities, to me just still feels too much of a disconnect for me to do with any comfort or confidence in it.

There is just something about a Pencil on paper that just feels right to me!

Anyhow after the crowds die down this weekend I'm going to trek on up to the apple store for a refund! Its a shame, as the pro has a lot of potential, and in a few generations i might try it again, but for now, its too little for too much money!

Let me know what you guys think

-Al

Well. I'm certainly no artist, and I never planned to get the Pencil anyway, but when I tried it in the store, I felt like there was no traction between the tip and the iPad screen, so it was hard to write with it. I'm very sorry for your disappointment, but kind of glad to hear I'm not the only one who finds it uncomfortable to write/draw with the Pecxil.

Do try the surface 4 and pen. The rubber tip gives excellent tactile feedback similar to biro on paper and there is a kit that has 4 other tips for different feel and feedback. There is some parallax similar to the cintiq range but the feel is a lot better than iPad pro.

I agree with you that the apple pencil is probably the best pen so far but the feel while drawing on the glass isn't right yet even with the slightly different finish Apple have given the pro (try the pencil on your iPhone or iPad Air, the pro defiantly has a little more friction). Also this newer glass finish makes the pro a total grease trap which is tough to clean with just a "damp" cloth.

I do like the SP4 quite a bit. It's astounding to me MS actually made the N-trig junk work. Wacom is still better, but it's certainly understandable that MS uses the....company they bought.

"Save it until the next one to sell even more" greed on apples part.

Yes, the mantra. The manipulative 'drip feed, mentality of turnaround. Bait & Switch. Its infuriating. Its like their "Secret" upgrade tactic yet oh so transparent.
And still i come back annually to empty my pockets for them lol

Sorry it didnt work out for you. Back to the drawing board (no pun) ;)

After having used both the iPad pro and the Surface Pro 4 I agree that the resistance the surface pro 4 pen offers against the screen makes writing and drawing feel so much more natural. Apparently the rubber tip that gives the increased resistance will eventually wear down and have to be replaced... but the tip kit for the pen is only 10 dollars so well worth it.

I would think that apple will incorporate this into the next version of the apple pencil for sure, its a huge gain to have the increased resistance against the glass!

Is the resistance of the pencil better or worse with a screen protector in place?

As for writing with no friction due to glass properties, the screen can be covered with a thin layer. You can get a plastic screen protector which gives you more friction to write on. It will absolutely not interfere with the Pencil. You can even cover it with thin paper and it will still work just fine. I predict that screen protection companies will come with even more textured protectors for iPad Pro to achieve that "feel" and "friction" you want.

I got iPad Pro 32GB but upgrading for 128GB because I love it! iPad Pro is just amazing. It takes great notes. And making a movie is a breeze.

Maybe you could have tried a screen protector. There are companies that make them for digital artists to increase the friction on the glass for drawing tablets. They usually come in many varieties.

TL;DR.....I mean REALLY TL;DR. I got the gist of the OP's post from the thread title. Well OP sorry that didn't work out for you. Not everything is for everybody. Try out some other type of product that will suit your needs.

The drawing experience on the Surface will be far worse. There is no comparison really between the two.

Thanks for participating in the iPad Pro beta/pilot program. I'm sure in a few years there will be apps that justify its existence.

Here is a charging ring that works to recharge a pen in a non silly way

Well i cant return it today as its a holiday and im not too keen on braving the black Friday crowds at the mall tomarrow...that said...when i really think about it, the whole screen friction issue brings up the real important question...is drawing as a hobby justified in a over 1000 dollar product for me?

Again this is 6 months worth of savings here. I can go out right now, (well tomorrow after the holiday) and buy a notebook and some pencils for under 20 bucks and get better performance based on my life expernece! I was trained using pencil and paper! Im all for tech, i love tech, i abosolutley adore seeing digital concept art for movies and games and all that,
and id love to be part of that....but im not, i dont think i personally have the talent for anything beyond a basic sketch, and the ipad pro puts that into perspective for me

Its depressing and yet liberating at the same time. Im sitting there using it, trying to draw like i normally would, and it really feels like im fighting the software, the translation between brain and pen and screen isnt there like it is normally for pen and paper and i dont know if a 4 thousand dollar 27 inch wacom cintiq would solve that for me, let alone the pro!

Im not hating on the pro at all. I think it has its faults, sure...But flaws and lack of certain things not withstanding...ITS STILL THE BEST IPAD OUT THERE BAR NONE IN TERMS OF PREFORMANCE, SCREEN, BATTERY, ETC.

It really is a 3 fold problem.

1: Its hard to constantly improve on "perfection", as in the meaning that the Ipad line has set the standard for tablets since 2010. I know plently of casual people who call other non apple tablets "Ipads" just because it set the standard for them!

2: Its a question of value and expectation:. The Pro title to alot of us, myself included puts expecations in the same line as the macbook pros and mac pros which are in alot of industry level standards. This...really isnt that! Its the best gosh darn ipad ever, and yes you can draw and run multiple apps...But for its price and title, it still is just at the end of the day, IMHO an Ipad! I dont see many people ditching there work laptops or high end video editing equiptment for this! Just how it is. Its own software is limiting it, its priced for what it is, a tad to high, and in that aspect, i got to honestly say i do think the surface line is a better value! (Im not getting a surface, im just saying in terms of value. odds are im not even going to replace it with another tablet)

3: its just not right for me. At the end of the day, im a hobbiest sketch artist. Im not doing high end concept art, im not on a deadline to get storyboards done, im the guy who gets too dam excited over ideas in movies and tech and stuff and likes to doodle them out! Pen and paper work better for me then the ipad pro. its more satsifing, its more natural. Theres something in the process of it that works there that isnt here. its not the tablets fault, its my own.

If you can draw on glass and get used to it and can except the products limitations then by all means go for it, enjoy in good health, do amazing stuff with it. Im seeing some amazing artwork made on it and frankly its depressing me as hard as i try with it i cant produce stuff half as good with it!

But facts are facts and when it comes down to cold hard value for my money, its just not there. I wish to god it was. Maybe in the next generation model, idk. Ill be sure to watch and find out and kinda excited to see what happens!

untill then, its a just not there yet for me!

128gig is the only way to go for all devices
