- doesn’t happen at resolution other than the default resolution

I see the sharp corners at any resolution. There are two issues here: the white lines and the sharp or on/off flickering corners. The sharp corners piss me off more than the white lines because I see the sharp corners all the time.

Interesting, it bothers me a lot more than the glitch. That is the problem with sitting close to a large LCD monitor. I notice the lack of perfectly even brightness across a large white background. Then there is the subtle color shift when viewing off axis.
Yeah, the uneven white is a problem. Always has been. Even on really expensive reference displays I have used. But I have had that for so long that... well... the sharp corners and white lines stick out more than that.

@kkh I was able to duplicate the pixelated corner doing the steps you said, I opened both Safari and Mail, and kept the Mailboxes view open with an email selected. Alt-tabbing or even clicking somewhat quickly between the two resulted in that squared off group of pixels of the Mail app at random times. Sometimes it would remain for several "cycles" but it would also sometimes go away for several more. As for the flickering of the app window itself, I can't seem to get that to happen.

Also, I tried doing the same thing in other apps like Finder windows, Messages, Maps, Photos, etc. and this corner pixelation I can only get to happen in Finder and Mail, no other apps. I was able to do this in both Default as well as the 2048 resolution I've been using for a few days now.

Are you only seeing the corner pixelation in other apps/windows?

The flicker on/off should be easy to replicate by simply moving the window up and down or sideways very slowly. I posted a video of this early on in this thread.

I see it in most Finder windows. Folders, System Preferences, etc. And Mail, Xcode, others. Safari, Messages, Music... no. But Photos, yes. It has to do with the title/toolbar combination and use of transparency in that area.

The treatment of choice for OCD is exposure and response prevention.

This is completely off-topic, but:

Exposure to what? To sloppiness? To not doing something right? To cutting corners?

Response prevention? To what? To seeing **** and not calling it out?

Hah! The treatment, in most cases, for anything, is replacement. For OCD, there is no replacement. You live with it and it's a blessing (you can make a living out of being OCD and fixing sloppiness and mistakes) and a curse (you hesitate putting stuff out until it's perfect). There is no treatment for it. If somebody tells you otherwise, they do not know what they're talking about and they have not experienced it first hand.

I certainly hope so! But how do you know for sure that Apple is looking into this issue?

If they had a statement on their website acknowledging the issue, it would go a long way to giving buyers more confidence. But Im guessing its not something they want to advertise.

I just ordered an i7 5700XT - should I cancel and wait or take the plunge?
While we can debate the merits of whether the glitch is software or hardware, can it be fixed, when will it be fixed........

I personally wouldn’t order the 5700XT for another month or so. It’s having issues (this thread is evidence).

I kinda need a computer now and want to future proof my graphics, I'm pretty sure if it's hardware Apple will replace it or fix it. Seems more likely to be software anyway no? I may take the risk

Buy the 5700 XT because you want and need that performance now, not in the future. These 2020 iMacs are about as far from being "future proof" as a computer can be. (BTW "Future Proofing" and "Buy the Best that You Can" are mantras that make little actual sense, especially in tech.) Set aside for the moment the AIO design, the thermal limitations, the inability to upgrade. Consider that if you get one of these, in four years you will be working on system that very likely doesn't run whatever is then Apple's current OS, has been vastly eclipsed in both performance and features by Apple silicon, looks awfully dated next to the new 6K or 8K 32-inch iMac, and may no longer run the current versions of whatever applications you're using it for. Consider also that this graphical glitch may persist throughout your ownership of the machine. The issue is likely software related, but this hasn't been confirmed. Even if it is software related, there is no guarantee that Apple (or AMD) will correct this.

There are a lot of legitimate reasons for getting one of these 2020 iMacs and getting the 5700 XT, but don't get it in the expectation that you may need that graphical performance in the future. It's a such a small reward especially if you have to suffer through an unpleasant ownership experience to get there.

Id be willing to bet that if I rang Apple today to report this issue, I would get told they haven't heard of the issue before, and Im the first person to report it. That doesn't give me any confidence.
I’m not gonna argue with that. I bet you’re right. It’s sad.

I meant in the foreseeable future like next few months, but yes good points well made.

I am an actual PhD clinical psychologist. As in - I make my living treating this stuff. You may not have found a treatment that works but that doesn’t mean there isn’t one. There most definitely is for OCD. Remember that anecdotes are not data. :)

It would do us all a lot of good if MR would feature this thread on their homepage. I know for a fact Apple pays close attention to MR. As they should!

If they had a statement on their website acknowledging the issue, it would go a long way to giving buyers more confidence. But Im guessing its not something they want to advertise.

Actually, a statement of acknowledgement from Apple is all I’d need to be happy to go ahead and buy it. At least I’d then know they’re onto it. But as it is with total silence it’s quite concerning to me, so I’d rather wait.

The total silence thing is typical of Apple though. It’s beyond frustrating. They rarely if ever admit fault to anything.

The good thing about waiting is that delivery times should improve as production continues to ramp up.

Yep, me too! It's the only thing holding me off.

I’m wondering, and following is also my point of view , if Apple would confirm that it is a software issue even if there will be no patch for some time, would you place your order in the meaning that all will be alright In the long run ? There is nothing wrong with admitting a weakness, it could even help to activate the order placement again. Who can convince the people in Cupertino ?

Nobody is going to convince Apple of anything. Imagine the most stubborn person you’ve ever met. Now multiply that by 1000. I don’t know why Apple does what they do when it comes to publicly acknowledging things. I can only guess that there’s someone in the company calling those shots that is making insane amounts of money. Could be liability and legal reasons. Anyone’s guess is as good as mine.

So for those of us that want the 5700XT but don't fancy the risk, I guess the 5700 will have to do, seems to run cooler so that's a plus.
It’s terribly sad to see people ‘settling’ for a lesser performance machine because Apple can’t seem to get things right out of the gate. I’m sorry you’re even having to think about this. It isn’t right. Hopefully those of us that have seen these issues are blowing up Apple’s tech support line and their engineers are seriously working on this right now.
