considering the MBA keeps selling out, i'd say there's plenty of people enjoying their "imoments" with it.

I'm not sure what you're saying, but do know that I'm not dissing Air. I'm just saying that I believe a lot of people will be disappointed if the iMac-to-be turns out to be MacAir on a stand.

Why would you even imagine such a thing. My iMac has a 2.8 extreme processor, 1Tb hard drive and a 2 foot screen. It would make the MBAir a McBrick.:D

I was all worked up over getting a new iMac for the last couple of months, but wanted to get the latest update. At this point, I'm worn out and have decided to scrap the whole idea of a new iMac till the end of the year. Surely, something new will be out by then. In the mean time, maybe I will take my "Apple" money and buy some new lens for my camera or a new HDTV. My wait is over................

Right answer, wrong solution.

I think what hurts is paying full price for a computer that is 8+ months old. Usually components go down in price over that span (cpu, ram, drives, lcd). I don't know what dell or hp was selling 8 months ago, but whatever it was it is a decent amount cheaper now, or the same dollars will buy more up to date components in larger quantities.

If the iMac and Mini will be updated once per year, the price needs to come down every few months, then jump back when a new model is released.

Again, i just feel like a delay to the update is caused by the strong iMac sales. Apple is selling 8 month old hardware at todays prices and they are trying to squeeze every cent out of that as long as they can. The longer they can keep selling the current iMac the higher their profit margin goes. Nothing wrong with that if you are the company, but it sucks for people wanting to buy.

Having said that, I am very happy with my 2.16ghz iMac, it's quite quick (waiting on an update to buy 2nd iMac). But just because the current gen iMac is a great performing computer doesn't mean you should pay full price for 8 month old hardware.

I have two words for you.

Refurbished Macs

That's the best you're going to get on aging Apple hardware before an update. I don't recommend the price jumping either. Newer, faster hardware just gets silently put in on the Windows only side at the same price.

:D Actually after comparing a 24" refurbished iMac +apple care to Amazons deal ($100 rebate+no sales tax, apple care $20 less) it come out to being only about $60 less for me.

I agree. That's why I have decided not to buy now. If I have not emptied my wallet by the time the update comes, I will buy right away. If I'm short the cash, I'll just have to wait a bit. Not the end of the world. My old notebook is still serving me fine for now.

i don't think you're answer is right either. if apple updates the iMac's in june with montevina, buy it right away. That's the right answer when it comes to apple products.. buy it as soon as its released. we're so close to the new revision anyway, whats another month or two or waiting, especially compared to waiting until the end of the year.

although i will say this for waiting beyond the next revision... at some point by june 09, we'll see iMac's with these specs

one USB 3.0 port, blu-ray (not that I really care about that, lol), Intel true quad-core nethelam processors (4 processors on a single dye=blazing fast, 1066 mhz front side bus, DDR3, 2GB standard memory, 22" and 26" LCDs (better than HD resolution), graphics cards with 512 mb standard.

lol same here.. Ive kinda moved on to other things for the time being and put my conversion to mac & logic pro on hold.. but will def. get an imac at some point this year.. just later than sooner now.

I've been wrong about a lot of things in my life, so...yeah...this could be another in a series.
On the other hand, if the poster is forgoing the enjoyment of a new iMac because he can't bear the thought of paying full price for (OMG) 8-month-old technology, AND he's taking that money to buy a HDTV, when HDTV isn't exactly fresh technology, and is only going to get cheaper, I still think he's better off buying AND enjoying the iMac.
I mean, really...HDTV is still TV.

Really, it makes sense to wait two months. The current iMacs are nearing the end of a cycle. Would you rather pay $1,500 for 8 month old technology or current technology?

well, all technology is getting cheaper. The only thing getting more expensive is the cost of the aluminum for the casing.

Not going out on a limb here, but I'm not so sure you are going to be seeing this level of iMac in June 2009. All the pieces aren't out yet and the iMac does tend to lag a little. Especially on the screen size and the processor - are 22" and 26" a standard of any sort? That would be key. Also, it is hard to predict models based on unavailable processors. Apple just moved to 1GB on memory, so to go to 2GB by next summer might be a bit quick. If it is one thing we know about Apple, they milk the memory upgrade dollars for WAY past the time it is seemly....

Maybe June 2010 with the next Mac OS?

More like 4GB standard.

Also, Nehalem does not have a front side bus. It will use quick path;)

my bad, I meant to say faster than 1066 mhz bus, which isn't even out yet, lol

as for the post before salavat's, memory is very cheap already and I wouldn't be surprised if 4 is the new std a year and a half from now.

as for LCD's, any size can essentially be manufactured, but every 2" between 20 and 26 seems to be the most common.

so Futureshop in canada has had iMacs on sale for over 2 weeks now... are resellers really going to continue having iMacs on sale until the summer? is Apple really going to prolong their "Limited Time Special Offer", which already seems to have been going on since the dawn of time...

but week after week, still no iMac update... and might i add that this week's online apple store closing was such a tease... i mean seriously, Final Cut Studio now shipping? come on!

RELEASE THE NEW IMACS ALREADY!!!

Well, if you keep the "current technology" computer for just 8 months, you will have ended up paying $1500 for "8 month technology" in any case.

So, again, would you rather pay the same for technology that will be outdated sooner or later?

You're still overlooking the fact that the choices in this particular situation weren't

Buy iMac now vs Wait for newer iMac (newer technology)

but were, instead

Buy iMac now vs Buy a HDTV (older technology that is poised for huge price drops)

One could understand someone holding on to their money and waiting for the optimum time to make an investment in a new computer, but throwing money down a HDTV rat hole makes no sense at all.

You have to consider other factors as well.

Prices on the refurb iMacs are pretty low. I doubt they go much lower when the new models hit. (maybe $100 lower max on the low-end 20" iMac.)

Also if you're selling an old Mac to finance a new one then you're probably going to get more for it today than 2-4 months from now.

So waiting won't necessarily get you more tech for your money.

But it all depends on the what the new models offer.

I think ideally one should wait until new models come out to purchase. But that timing isn't always right for everyone.
