Tone mapping here refers to taking an HDR video and mapping the colors so they appear correctly on non-HDR displays. This is needed if the Apple TV is connected to an SDR TV and for many iOS and Mac devices as well…...

OK thanks for the clarification. So in this case, nothing to do with tone mapping just the luminance portion (e.g. - a 1,000 nit HDR video source to the display’s lower max nits of say ~ 100-700 nits) while maintaining HDR PQ “gamma”?

……Unfortunately, the ability to do frame-by-frame adjustments on the Apple TV is not possible at this time.

Actually it kind of is!

If you use an HDFury product such as the Vertex2 you can spoof the EDID to the AppleTV into thinking it’s connected to a Dolby Vision display, even if it is only HDR10 capable, such as Samsung UHDTVs and HDR10 projectors.

If you set your display settings to “4K59.94 Dolby Vision” and leave “Match Dynamic Range” setting off and “Match Frame Rate” on (so you get the native frame rates like 23.975 for most movies), it will then convert your HDR10 only movies to LLDV/Dolby Vision utilizing the DV dynamic tone mapping processing and algorithms (VS10?) within the AppleTV 4K.

The Vertex2 settings I use to prove this are basically setting the HDR/AVI Custom EDID values to 10,000 nits (yes, 10,000 nits!) and then using either Automix with the DV block selected and the DV Datablock Tab set to BT2020 and Max Luminance of 1,000 nits, or you can just use Custom EDID 9 or 10 under the EDID Tab to essentially accomplish the same thing, but with less customization abilities but more plug and play for novices.

I use Infuse in this manner to play my UHD HDR Bluray rips and I never have to adjust a thing anymore on my LK990 or Samsung LSP9T projectors since its dynamically tone mapping the signal. It works on everything from super high nit movies and scenes like The Meg chapter 8, Aquaman chapter 6 to low nit titles like Blade Runner 2049, Star Wars The Last Jedi, Arrival, The Mandalorian on Disney+ streaming and everything in between!

The image is absolutely incredible and akin to buying a very high priced Lumagen Radiance Pro or MadVR Envy Video Processor but without wasting your kid’s college fund or remortgaging your home!!!

Today we are extremely proud to announce the release of Infuse 7.1, with some great new things.

Metadata powered by TMDb

Infuse now uses TMDb metadata for both movies and TV shows! TMDb is the leading community-driven metadata database featuring 675K+ movies, 115K+ TV shows, and 2M+ images — all ready and available to beautify your library! TMDb also has an army of passionate contributors who collectively work to make over 300K edits every single week for both new and existing content.

Infuse has relied on TMDb for movies since its inception, and moving to TMDb for TV shows allows Infuse to display higher-quality images, support additional languages, and provide enhanced fetching speed and accuracy. After installing 7.1, existing TV shows in you library will be updated with the new info from TMDb...automatically.

Fresh new faces

There are few things more important when it comes to movies and TV shows than the cast and crew, and now pictures of these talented folks are displayed front and center when viewing video details. Also, character names are now listed below which may make settling late-night trivia challenges a bit easier.

Cast and crew search

In addition to viewing headshots while browsing, you can view other works by a specific actor, director, writer, etc... by simply tapping on their profile image found on the details page. Infuse's standard search can also be used to search for specific people and display all the movies and TV shows in which they have starred in.

Thanks so much for using Infuse! 🙂

The switch to TMDB caused some minor issues with some of my TV shows, but overall it went surprisingly smooth. What was the reason for the switch though? Is their database better maintained than TVDB or something?

Quite a few things factored into the decision to switch, and some details can be found in this thread.

The reasons make sense.

The biggest issue I had is that TVDB used a different season numbering scheme for one of my foreign shows (the German crime procedural "Tatort"). It's one of the longest-running shows in the world, and TVDB had used the release years as season numbers, while TMDB uses traditional season numbering. But after renaming my recorded episodes with a small script it was all picked up just fine by Infuse (although the watched indicators were reset).

This reminds me of something I'd love @firecore to add - movies have the year underneath them but TV shows say "Season 1" etc. On many devices there's room for both. Would be great to have the years ie "Season 1 - 1980" or "6 Seasons (1994-1999)" as an option.

I just gave this a real quick run on MBA M1 really impressive on first impressions.
Happy to see the cast and crew finally available, feels completed now.

Looking forward to iPad and ATV now, will check on that tomorrow.

Question: is there a way to see the video bit rate as the movie is playing?

I've seen this option when playing a disc on an Oppo player and wondered if the same option exists for Infuse.

Any information worked be appreciated. Thank you.

The bitrate is not displayed in Infuse at this time.

However, videos will always play videos in their full original quality, so the effective bitrate will be unchanged from the original video.

Thank you.

I though the speed test in the Shares option would show this since it asks me to select a file for testing but I now see that it's to test the transfer speed between my Apple TV and server over my network.

Anyone else having playback issues on tvOS 15? After updating tvOS I've now had two instances where the video suddenly showed a lot of judder, almost as if the framerate dropped in half. Stopping and restarting seemed to fix it, but sometimes it started again after a while. I haven't found a way to reliably reproduce the issue though.

What is the source of your video files?

I play 4k and HD rips from my personal disc collection off a USB 2.0 drive connected to my router. Everything is working fine with tvOS 15 for me. Files contain HD audio, PGS subs, and are in a m2ts or mkv container.

They were just regular H.264 videos in MP4 containers (encoded with Handbrake). I've played them before with Infuse without problem. Saw the issue the first time after the tvOS 15 update. It happened again the other day.

I have BluRay rips from my disc collections in an mkv and mts containers with no issues during playback. It should not make any difference in regards to the container for video. Lossless audio is not supported in an MP4 container which reduces the required bandwidth for streaming.

I don't think it's a problem with the files. There's most likely some incompatibility between Infuse and tvOS 15. Over on Reddit some people reported crashes with that combination.

Sorry for the trouble.

We're looking into a few similar reports, and you can follow this thread for updates.

Thanks, read your comment there. I'm using a projector with an AVR, so that would potentially confirm your theory.

Also have to correct what I wrote above: the files in question were actually H.265 (encoded with Handbrake). I haven't seen it in H.264 videos yet.

I finally encountered the same thing last night when watching one of my DVD rips (480p in an mkv container, DD 5.1). Movie was so jittery I had to use my nVidia Shield to finish the show.

Today we are excited to announce the release of Infuse 7.2, with a fantastic new addition: Spatial audio.

Spatial audio has arrived!

Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking brings theater-like sound that surrounds you from the movie or video you're watching, so that it seems as if the sound is coming from all around you. The sound field stays mapped to the device, and the voice stays with the actor or action on screen. Now, in iOS/tvOS 15, Infuse is able to utilize spatial audio while playing videos when using AirPods Pro or AirPods Max headphones. Learn more about spatial audio

New quick settings and playback controls

On iOS, there is a new playback overlay which provides quick access to to switch between audio tracks and subtitles. There are also new gesture controls for skipping forward and back. Want to quickly skip ahead 10s? Simply double-tap the right side of the screen. Want 20s? Then triple-tap. Want to go further? Just add an extra tap for each 10s.

Ready for iOS 15

Infuse is tuned up and ready for Apple's latest release. We're also working to take advantage of more great new things found in Apple's latest releases. Stay tuned!
