Installed iOS 11 GM on my 10.5 iPad Pro (first taste of iOS11 as it’s my only iPad and I didn’t want to slow it down with an earlier beta). Also now installed on my iPhone 6 Plus and it’s laggy as hell.
Huge disappointment on the iPad. Guess I will get used to it but currently wish I could go back to iOS 10. It’s silky smooth, but here are my list of hates, dislikes and annoyances:
Huge disappointment on the iPad. Guess I will get used to it but currently wish I could go back to iOS 10. It’s silky smooth, but here are my list of hates, dislikes and annoyances:
- New iPad keyboard. Too many acc8d3nt@l n7mb3rs in middle of words due to swipe down feature. I think this will at least improve over time as I learn to adjust my finger positions to work around. Also, if we’re going to add this, where is the “swipe up to capitalise letters” functionality?
- New dock and mission control: confusing layout makes it harder to switch apps quickly in my opinion as it is not immediately obvious which slot the app I have just switched from occupied. Not sure what the advantage is of pairing multitasking sessions together
- Multitasking: much less intuitive and not as quick as before. Rather than swipe from right I have to swipe up, select app from dock (if the one I want is there), hold and then drag to the right, let go, then adjust to desired position. Also, now, to toggle to split I have to adjust toggle at top, but then switch to a different toggl3 on the left to adjust size. In iOS10, both of these actions were completed using the same control. Also to switch secondary apps, which is one of the most common things I do, rather than swipe down and choose I now have to go through the same above convoluted process
- Pop-over multitasking: 2nd app no longer disappears when you return to the main app, meaning it’s mostly in the way. It can’t be resized, only moved between two positions, and the only way to move it is the toggle at the top, but you have to hit it right for it to work, which makes it way too frustrating to get the damn thing out of the way. I can only presume this behaviour was changed to facilitate the drag and drop feature, but this brings me to the next point...
- Drag and drop: while this works well and as you would expect, it gets in the way of the more useful IMO function of hold to bring up contextual menu. Now I have to hold for an extra 1-2 seconds to bring up the pop-up, which is what I need 95% of the time. Also we’re back to that annoying pre-iOS 7 trick of trying to hit the tiny minus button to get rid of recently opened apps in the dock (and hold to jiggle on home screen now takes several seconds longer to activate as well)
- Why in God’s name is the functionality for core functions now completely different - in some cases diametrically opposite - for different devices?! I intend to get an iPhone X but this means forever more I will have swipe up for the dock on iPad and control centre but perform a completely different set of gestures on the new iPhone... which of course is different to all other iPhones! Surely, it would have made sense for the iPhone X to implement the swipe up for dock as in iPad, or at least implement the same functionality consistently acros# devices... this really isn’t good for muscle memory!
