Running very well on my 6plus, scrolling performance in apps/safari in particular is much improved, really noticeable. I don not experience slowdowns as shown in some videos. Some glitches with apps opening windows over the lock-screen when opening from a notification but that's incidental and feels animation related. Overal feels snappy. Takes some getting used to the extra whitespace and ridiculously large titles.

App store looks way better, and I like the editorial content. This will help discovery for really good apps. But if you're not getting featured I think you'd better find a new job or platform to develop for. Discoverability hasn't been solved in a lot of platform(looking at you Steam). Still a lot of crap apps get approved, especially everyone trying to make a quick buck with some AR junk.

Performance on ipad mini 2 is disastrous though. Will probably roll that one back to 10.

I really like iOS 11 - no complaints other than I hate that you can't turn off the wi-fi and bluetooth radios as easily as before. Maybe one more.. multi task could have been better designed.

I've used it since day one and it's been trash ever since. I used to think iOS 9 was the worst iOS version and wouldn't ever be taken away from that title, but I was extremely wrong with that opinion. This is by far the worst, buggiest, jankiest iOS version I have ever seen since I started using iOS in 2011.

I really want to downgrade to 10.3.3, but can't because iOS 11 has screwed my phone up so much that the downgrade never carries my data over, half-asses it and barely runs, or completely fails during the downgrade. Every time, I have to restore my phone, update back to cancerOS 11 and restore my backup.
This entire situation has made me furious with the company, and their sorry excuses for inexcusable messes across all their products is simply unforgivable. I paid $750 for a phone that is a powerful tool for me, now it's just a chore to use it. Scott Forstall and Steve always said that they made iPhone with the idea that it wasn't work just to use it. It all worked and everything did what you expected it to do. Now it's just a mission to cram as much useless non-sense into a code base and release it without question. Whether it works or not, who knows, but it exists and it will keep everyone "happy". It should never be ran that way and it never should've went that path in the first place. I am really upset with this garbage they have given me.
Restore the phone as new using iOS 10 and then restore from a backup that you hopefully have (from iOS 10).

Scrolling is effortless? I can't tell the difference from previous future.
Sorry for the late reply! If you have two devices, one running 10.x and the other 11.0, the difference is fairly easy to see/feel. The easiest test to do is a full thumb flick, trying to get the page to scroll rapidly. On 10.3.3 and below, the page feels sticky - like a wheel that hasn't been greased in a while. The momentum stops sooner. On iOS 11, the page scrolls with a gliding effect - similar to a champion pine wood derby car. The animation lasts longer, and there is less effort involved overall.

And just because somebody said we're poor with car analogies here at MR ;): liken old Safari behavior to off-road tires. Take your foot off the gas and just roll - the grip will slow your momentum down more quickly. Safari under iOS 11 is like a vehicle with low-rolling-resistance tires. You glide longer with your own momentum because the tires were designed this way. Sure, that's for fuel efficiency, but in the same sense scrolling in Safari is more efficient than it was before.

I feel exactly the same about iOS 11 as I did 10 and 9 and 8 and so on. It's the operating system. There's nothing, for me, to "enjoy". I don't get satisfaction out of quick animations. I don't get enjoyment from smoothness. Opening and closing the Control Center brings me no joy. The pleasure of using folders wore off years ago.

What excites me every year is what new capabilities they're giving app developers. With augmented reality and machine learning coming this year, I'm more excited than I've been in years. I expect to see people doing some truly amazing things with those capabilities. But to simply enjoy the operating system, on it's own merits, is a concept I can't really wrap my head around. I've built operating systems (in a college course, not professionally). It's nothing more than the foundation your apps are built on.

iOS 11 on my iPhone 6 (device is almost 3 years old):

  • Overall it runs well. Nice and smooth so far. No regrets about upgrading the OS.
  • I dislike the look & feel of the App Store. Too much wasted space and much more difficult to find things (I’m glad the iTunes app was not given the same treatment)
  • It seems like the extra white space and larger fonts are there because they are really designing for iPhone X and not smaller phones. I think it is a bit of a mistake to do this.
  • We just bought a new car and started using Carplay this week. It’s very frustrating that 3rd party navigation apps like Waze are not supported. That would make it much more useful for me.
  • Updates to Notes are welcome but haven’t had a chance to use them yet
  • Safari’s new PDF feature is interesting and could be usefully some point
  • I like customizing control center but wish I could change more than the bottom row
  • Whether you like some of the minor UX changes / design is really more of a personal preference (number dialer, new swiping motions for notifications etc.)
  • I haven’t explored every app / function yet for changes but other than the App Store no real gripes.

Or keep the phone plugged in to a charger during an update?
Thought that would be common sense.

It's not that it's not plugged in during the update. Apple releases you the operating system while it continues some background tasks you can't see. File indexing is one thing. This time, I believe photos were converted to the new format. Depending on how much you have stored, it can take a day or two for this to complete. I saw a post from one guy who had a lot of photos on his iPad. He commented how choppy everything was for a while until he realized his photos were probably being converted. Performance returned at the end.

This time, I believe photos were converted to the new format.

There is no automatic conversion, nor would you want want. JPEG is already a lossy format. If you convert it to another lossy format, you'll probably just make things worse.

But that doesn't mean it isn't scanning all your photos trying to identify find Palm Trees and Clubs.

Some things are better (multitasking window flexibility on iPad) some things are worse (have to have app in dock or return to home screen to open a second app in multitasking; the way the WiFi/ Bluetooth toggles act in CC) some things are just different without being better or worse and some of these give the impression they’ve changed for the sake of being changed (fonts and iconography, control centre on iPhone)

Could have been indexing the photos I guess. I'm not sure. On making things worse going form one lossey format to another I tend to agree. What I've read the OS does though is interesting. When you attach a photo to an email or send in a SMS message, the photo is immediately converted to JPG format so non iOS devices can view the file. So maybe it's not too far fetched that they convert with update. I know I went from 110.32 GB free to 117.99 GB free on my 256 GB 7+.

On my 7 Plus, I have about 3500 photos (really need to do some house cleaning) and only noticed a little performance hit. Battery drain didn't seem to be too bad either. I upgraded at the office and left it plugged in until I went home about an hour after the upgrade.

So far, so good on 7+. Awesome to finally have inertial scrolling in Safari (never thought it would happen!). I don't love some of the bold fonts and other design tweaks, but that's a matter of taste.

A few minor complaints:

  • It seems more difficult to swipe up the NC than before -- it only retracts if I swipe from the very bottom of the screen. I feel like previously, you could swipe from any blank space on the NC or widget pane (i.e., any space where a swipe up wouldn't scroll through notifications or widgets), and the pane would retract. It also seems more difficult to swipe left & right btw. NC and widget panes.
  • If I'm on a call, and I open the app switcher, the "call in progress" pane is still displayed front & center -- I have to swipe right to get to the previous app. In every other scenario, the app you were just using is positioned to the right, and the app you used before that is front & center (to facilitate switching back & forth btw. apps, "peeking" at info in the previous app, etc.). Not sure why it works differently with a phone call now, but it makes it a bit slower to switch back to Waze when a call comes in.
  • Yep, the new App Store suxxx. Sorry, Apple...

Did a clean install (iTunes ipsw restore) on my 7 Plus this afternoon. The difference is huge regarding smoothness in animations and no more hiccups. Wonderful result...hoping it will stay this way after the first days. First impressions are excellent. Highly recommended

Im well aware of how to do since this has happened 5 times now. Even if I did have a 10 backup it would be severely out of date since I’ve been running 11 since July

What exactly is it that you don't like about it?
identify some issues that may affect your everyday usage and what can apple do to fix it?

Addendum to my post above: it's also a little harder to swipe right on a lockscreen notification to open it; unless you swipe really hard, it pauses on the new "Open" button (which you have to click, adding another step).

Inregards to swipe and call in situations, what way could apple do to enhance experience?
What is it about app store that you dislike?

Has nobody else noticed the lag in the calculator? If you type in three commands relatively quickly, it just does not work. For instance 1 + 2 + 3 typed fairly quickly yields 23. You really have to slow down. Overall I like where iOS 11 is going, but it just does not feel finished. It seems like an assignment someone turned in after forgetting they had to do it at 11PM the night before it was due.

Yes. It applies to everyone. It’s a particularly embarrassing error and Apple should 100% be ashamed of shipping it. It’s absolutely amateur hour.

I do think it’s a stretch to say that a minor accessory adds or detracts from the operating system in a meaningful way though. I’m sure you know this, but, if you intend to use calculator functionality either use spotlight for simple calculations or get a calculator app until it gets fixed.

Yes definitely I agree. But the problem is it doesn't just stop at the calculator. There are constant areas where the text just does not render correctly or align with what it should be aligned with. It just seems like a huge step back. I have had many issues on iPad of opening up iMessage only to see that I cannot type a response to a text unless I force close the app and reopen it. Small but annoying problems like this are everywhere in iOS. I'm hoping they release a fix very quickly. I can't say that I love using my iPad right now. Things just aren't working like they should. I am going to do a full restore and see if that helps.

Just tried this, and you're right -- it's like the "+" button slowly "fades" from white (activated) back to orange (idle); and if you hit it again while it's "fading," it won't register.
