My iPhone Xs Max get's error 4005, if I try to update to iOS 12.1 with iTunes.
If I restart the phone, it starts with Restore mode, I can then update it to iOS 12.01 with iTunes, and it works again.
Tried updating to iOS 12.1 3 times now...

Waited for the iOS 12.1 OTA to be available, that one worked.
So don't know what that Itunes error 4005 was about.. :/

I just installed the IPSW on my iPhone X, because it said iOS 12 OTA. It worked. Better safe than sorry. For those who don't know how to upgrade from an IPSW: Connect to iTunes and option-click "Update", then select your freshly downloaded IPSW file. Make sure you've downloaded the version for your specific model though...

sadly you can't iTunes reports that it is up to date. Apple is getting sloppy...
Not wrong, but I do think it's always been that way. The Settings app and OTA go by build number (16Axxx), while iTunes only seems to check the version number. Pretty dumb to me, even if most people elect to go the OTA route.

Do i have to delete beta profile for ota to show up? Im on the latest beta and it doesn’t show up

Install the IPSW which will wipe your phone then you should be able to install your last 12.1 beta backup...

Not if you use “shift” + “check for update” and then choose the downloaded .IPSW, it will not reset to factory.

Also getting iOS 12 showing up OTA for a Verizon iPhone XS. I know how to get the IPSW, but could someone briefly detail how to update using that IPSW without data loss? Thanks!

EDIT: I just finished making a local iTunes backup - good to go on that front.

As above.

It a recap on iOS 12 about what it brought and then states this update brings the following improvement.
If we wanted to read the release notes we'd go to the Settings app and sit there, instead let's post what people actually want to see, a clean list of changes and tidbits

interesting....I did not know that. People keep saying to download the IPSW but if you don't have access to the developer portal where do you go? (please no pirate sites) ???

mine says 12.1 but i have not installed yet because i dont have access to wifi till i get home from work.

now hopefully in the future Apple will randomly choose the notes header from prior updates to make this process even more fun! I'm thinking that they try the header from iOS 9.2 next time just to mix things up! :)

Once you have downloaded the appropriate IPSW then open iTunes and connect your iPhone. Click on iPhone icon. Hold the option key down while you click on the Check for Update button. (This applies to a Mac, Windows is slightly different) Navigate to where you downloaded the IPSW and select it to start the update. This results in updating to 12.1 while retaining your data and settings.

Of course be sure to have a fresh backup either via iCloud or locally via iTunes just in case!

Thanks for that! After reading reports about the OTA, I think I'm just going to go that route. Good to know for the future though, definitely.

Thanks all, downloading now. Was scared that it was going to downgrade me.

also, 9to5 reported homepod 12.1 but I'm not getting that? can anyone else confirm?

Thanks my friend.
I can verify this. Like other public beta testers on 12.1b5, I deleted the beta profile, went to Settings > Software update and was shown iOS 12 not 12.1.

I installed anyway and got iOS 12.1, build number 16B92 which is the correct build number for today's public release of 12.1.
