could the GM we get tomorrow after the keynote be different to the public release the week after or the exact same build
I think it's only ever been different like once? I think there was a minor update to the iOS 9 GM?

Otherwise GM and public release have always been the same

If I leave the public beta program today, will I get the release version of iOS 12 when it comes out next week, or do I need to do anything else?

Edit: I found my answer on the Apple website, I should have read further. I will in fact receive the standard version of iOS12 when it is released, most likely next week.

Or if you wait for tomorrow, you'll get the GM, then remove the beta profile. It will be the same thing as the iOS 12 public release, but you'll get it a week or so sooner.

Won't it still have some stuff like the feeback app and debugging tools installed? I'd like to get rid of those, I don't usually participate in betas, I just had a really bad experience in iOS 11.

Also, if public for some very unlikely reason isn’t the same as GM, it’ll be a later build, meaning you should be able to OTA to it from the GM no problem.

No. the GM update removes all that. It literally is the public release, but early, so that devs can have a final shot at getting their apps ready before iOS 12 goes public.

For example, if you get the GM tomorrow, and then remove the profile, or don't remove it, you won't get an update show up on your phone when iOS 12 goes public - because you'll already have the same exact thing

I’m sure this has probably been covered in this thread, so my apologies in advance...

...but generally how long after the public release of a new iOS do we wait before the first iOS XX.0.1 beta?

I hope a new Waze update drops so we can use it on CarPlay!

Just my guess (well, it is a speculation thread..), I don't think we will see either Waze or Google Maps apps availability on CarPlay with iOS12 this week. Maybe it will, but I'm just thinking Apple will want people to use the new Maps update a little longer before allowing the competition in there. Or, if they are introduced this week, I think their features will be extremely limited...which may be fine for people that just prefer them for basic guidance.

My official guess is that Waze and Google will not be available on CarPlay until the new year...

If the API's are in iOS 12 then they will be supported as soon as Waze and Google want to support them, we won't get them this week for the simple reason that XCode GM won't be released till tomorrow and then Apple probably won't start approving iOS 12 updates until the day before they push the public release.

You realise the new Maps update only affects a small part of the US right?

We’ll see this week I guess...and yes, they said it would only affect a small part. I think they were purposefully holding back what will truly be launched over the next 90 days.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I think we are hoping/expecting that the map updates will expand somewhat from the current northern California section now updated.

I imagine they will but I don't think the map changes are reliant on OS updates past the initial iOS 12 release, I still imagine it's going to be months, or even years before we see a wide roll out, I mean Apple are still adding transit and such to new cities this many years after maps released.

I imagine releasing world wide on the new maps will take a long, long time.

Agree re it not being OS dependent. But they did promise more "this fall". So, if not next week, then i do expect to see the new imagery for much of the US yet this year. Not sure this is the same type of effort as getting transit directions, which requires help from municipalities. This is an internal initiative.

I would guess we'll see the iOS 12.1 beta sometime in the day or 2 after the general release of iOS 12.

That is not up to Apple. If google wants to do their updates (or has already done them) it could be available as soon as next week when iOS 12 goes live for customers. It's a from the stage announcement, so I'd bet that Apple has some info from Google that it will be coming in a timely fashion.

Apple only said that CarPlay would allow third party navigation apps as part of iOS 12. That doesn’t necessarily mean day one or month one. But again, we’ll see very soon...

The availability of the CarPlay-enabled 3rd party navigation app depends on two factors: developer’s app submission and Apple’s app approval.

Assuming the developers have all the codes ready, all that’s left for them to do is compile and submit the runtime with the iOS 12 GM XCode. Then it’s queued into Apple’s review process, which takes about a week. Ideally, the app update’s appearance in the App Store will coincide with the public release of iOS 12 GM. Similar things have happened all the time with the past major iOS updates.

One uncertainty is whether Apple will hold back and/or take more time to review the apps with iOS 12 specific API. We’ll have to see, but I wouldn’t think think Apple will hold things back just to drive people to use the 1st party app that is Apple Maps. That’s because it’s far more likely that people will just complain and keep waiting out for the update to the 3rd party map app instead. Global map data improvement doesn’t happen overnight.

There will be at least one difference. Apple Support has already confirmed the GM will fix the activity badge issues.

Why must people be so pessimistic. The GM is likely to hold the biggest fixes since beta 1 -> beta 2.
Yeah GM also removes all back end logs so will be smoother maybe not noticeable but still better im excited :)
