Time passed between beta 4 and beta 5:

iOS 5: 15 days
iOS 6: N/A
iOS 7: 8 days
iOS 8: 14 days
iOS 9: 16 days
iOS 10: 8 days
iOS 11: 14 days
iOS 12: 13 days
iOS 13: 12 days

Not impossible it comes out this week, but likely next week
If we go by your list you have to compare beta 5 to beta 6, because beta 1 is most likely beta 2 internally due to WWDC being roughly 3 weeks late compared to the years before.

I wouldn’t assume that at all. If that were the case, then the September date would hold and think it is already known that phone/iOS release is delayed until October, correct?

The official release date is still fall, like every year. Rest be assured any potential delay is caused due to manufacturing and not software.

But fair point. I‘d still look at it as the software team having another month to polish the release, instead of them being late. That being said, they might still go ahead with the official release in September, or even have the keynote in September with pre-orders starting later (e.g. X or Xr being a month late). Never early enough to start the hype machine, I mean if they show the phones in September you might lock people into waiting for them instead of losing a potential sale to another manufacturer due to having the showcase of the new iPhones a month late.

BS.

Follow along: the first beta is "beta 1", the second is "beta 2", and so on. So, following that pattern, the fourth beta released would be beta ___?

Apple always has internal builds significantly farther along that what they release to test. This year is no different.

No one is trying to argue that. What I was suggesting is that the release we got as Beta 1 could‘ve been Beta 2 in an alternate reality without COVID-19 WWDC delay. There is no reason Apple could‘ve had a younger build ready as Beta 1 in early june, implying that the Beta 1 we got end of june would be more on par with a Beta 2 release from the years before.

It‘s basic math, they had 3 additional weeks to compile the first developer beta.

exactly this

Thats not how it works. Also, take your 3 extra weeks and deduct 3 for settlement of the team at Apple to switch to working from home (see the stories about some not being able to access certain things from home due to extreme security and resolving that, plus in my own job, working with developers, there was a bit of an adjustment period).

I think them releasing watchOS today probably means next betas next week.

Yea. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if they do WatchOS PB2 next week, to be in line with the Dev builds, like the other PBs.

Unlikely it’s today, but there were two other times that 8 days separated beta 4 and beta 5. But I think they’re going to spend some extra time fixing some remaining bugs before switching to a weekly schedule.

I think you know this, but it doesn't work that way. Apple engineers don't wake up one morning and say "Well, I was going to push the button on the next beta, but, you know, this one could use a little more polish before I set it loose on the world."

As was said (I think by @Ansath or @C DM ) somewhere many posts up the chain, Apple has an internal schedule of public release dates. Absent some showstopping bug, they release on their schedule. There's no "extra time for fixing bugs" there (plus, they're doing that all the time, even on the builds we don't see in the wild). So, Apple is already as certain as it can be not only for the next release date, but the cadence of release dates all the way to the GM. The only thing that will likely change that are unforeseen events or bugs.
