Unlikely it’s today, but there were two other times that 8 days separated beta 4 and beta 5. But I think they’re going to spend some extra time fixing some remaining bugs before switching to a weekly schedule.

As I mentioned before, 1 of those occasions, wasn't a genuine, it was due to them pulling Beta 4 a few hours after it was released on the Monday, and then re-released as B4 again on the Friday, then 8 days later, B5 was released ☺️

I think you know this, but it doesn't work that way. Apple engineers don't wake up one morning and say "Well, I was going to push the button on the next beta, but, you know, this one could use a little more polish before I set it loose on the world."

As was said (I think by @Ansath or @C DM ) somewhere many posts up the chain, Apple has an internal schedule of public release dates. Absent some showstopping bug, they release on their schedule. There's no "extra time for fixing bugs" there (plus, they're doing that all the time, even on the builds we don't see in the wild). So, Apple is already as certain as it can be not only for the next release date, but the cadence of release dates all the way to the GM. The only thing that will likely change that are unforeseen events or bugs.

Here you go...

"Apple has ... learned from ... iOS 13 fiasco". That's rich. I mean, the betas are not here for our enjoyment ... they are to help Apple get to a fully stable and complete version if iOS 14 for release in the fall.

I fully expect Apple to do what Apple needs to do to move the project along with little regard to issues that crop up and cause problems for those of us using iOS 14 beta on our daily driver. I also pretty much expect them to stick to whatever release schedule that they established before the first beta. Subsequent beta releases will not come sooner or later based on how well or poorly any beta release performs, including any issues that arise, bar any show-stopper. It's not a matter of "wow, beta 2 was solid, we can wait 3 more weeks for beta 3". It just doesn't work that way.

Doubtful. Beta software doesn't work that way. Apple won't release more/fewer betas, more/less frequently based on the number of bugs or issues. Their schedule is pretty much set prior to the start of the beta cycle. The only variation from that predetermined schedule would be the discovery of a major issue (bricking devices, etc), which would necessitate an additional emergency release.

That's not how the beta cycle works... releases don't come more or less frequently based on how stable the release process has been to that point. Apple has set a fixed schedule internally, and they will stick to it, barring any show-stopper issue from a beta release (bricking phones, can't call, no cellular connectivity, etc). Understand that they have internal builds much father along than what we see in the form of bi-weekly releases... it's not happening.

And historically, as we get later into the beta process, the public betas do get released on the same day as the developer preview builds... so that is also not going to be affected by how stable any given release is, again, barring a show-stopper issue (in which case, the public beta will be obviously delayed).

It will be between now & next Tuesday. There have been times when Apple releases a new stable update like they did yesterday that they will release a new beta a day or two after, even on a Thursday or Friday. So again, we do not know when, but the smart money would be on between now & next Tuesday...

Next Tuesday for Dev Beta, not before. Small chance it will be the Wednesday.

The last time a Dev Beta was on a Friday was due to The one released on The Tuesday being pulled temporarily due to major issues.

Sadly, "they" never want to believe us... and they don't analyze the reasoning for the out-of-pattern beta releases... but you are correct... most likely next Tuesday with a slight chance of not until Wednesday.

Everyone’s always looking for those Friday releases. The last thing I’d want is a nasty bug bricking my phone on a Friday. Pretty unlikely, but not zero.

Tuesday, most likely.

Exactly! And I'm sure the Apple employees don't want to risk the change of having to work all weekend to fix a bug that has bricked a bunch of devices.

This.

I still don’t get why people think betas are some kind of entertainment from Apple. They’re completely optional to use without warranty or guarantee and Apple should not have to dedicate PR resources to quell the complaints of some YouTube or tech blogger who tries to compare beta software year over year, and often only uses it to find things to whine about for drama likes/views.

Sorry for the rant but it’s getting rather annoying, and gets more annoying each year.

I still wish Apple never offered the public beta program for the reasons stated above. Keep it out of the hands of people that use it irresponsibly, to show off and the like.

Hiring people to test software internally costs a lot. Microsoft used to buy various devices to run their windows and office on real devices to test, but resort to a combination of telemetry and custome feedback as that approach is cheaper. I can easily argue apple is doing public beta program to save cost on hiring internal testing team.

As for YouTubers, some do make fun of iOS beta software while others don’t. It comes down to individual and their attitude. I do doubt Apple will pull beta program any time soon tho.

Same here. I’m hoping they move to a weekly cycle now that it’s August.

It’s very likely they will.

How many days beta 5 has lasted in previous versions:
  • iOS 10: 6 days
  • iOS 11: 7 days
  • iOS 12: 7 days
  • iOS 13: 9 days
There’s also a good chance it could come tomorrow. iOS 13 lasted 12 days on beta 4, iOS 12 lasted 13, and iOS 11 lasted 14.

Yeah, and I can’t blame them. I wouldn’t expect the program to be shut down anytime soon.

I wonder when we'll see GM/final. Seeing as WWDC was later this year, and there are rumors about hardware release delays (or at least for some iPhone models), curious if iOS 14 will come later than normal, so later in Sept or even if early Oct.
