I was happy to be on the latest version of the iOS 14 beta until I realized internally, most people in Apple are already running iOS 14 that are several versions ahead of the dev beta.

Apple's design evangelism manager just tweeted three "smiling face with tears" emojis which is probably only coming in iOS 14.1:
Tweet deleted.. strange.

What is surprising is that most people don’t know apple’s internal builds are always a few versions ahead of public release or beta. For example, the iOS 14 b5 released this week was probably compiled 2 weeks ago. That’s why the bugs reported to apple from b5 can mostly get fixed in b7 at the earliest because b6 is already done, waiting for release

There are likely different branches in play and things can still be adjusted in something that is beta 6 if really needed, while most of the newer work is going into a development branch that would be used for later betas.

I doubt that internal builds are THAT far ahead. Look at the Kernel of beta 5, that has been build on Aug 12th. That’s less than a week ahead of beta 5 release!

That’s just an example to make people get the idea. And of course, the 2-week interval between betas couldn’t always be the case . At least according to Rambo @_inside , during last summer’s iOS 13 beta cycle, some beta was compiled almost 2 weeks before public release. This year they may be on a tighter schedule because of the time

Strong possibility, judging by how well iOS 14 has been running so far.

Another beta release next week.

No.

A thousand times no.

How “well” iOS 14 is “working” has nothing to do with it. Apple has a schedule for the betas and sticks to it unless there is a serious problem. They don’t just decide midway through that “Hey it’s good enough. Let’s release.”

Why do you people keep spreading this nonsense?

Last time I checked, thread is called iOS 14 speculation, what is wrong with speculating about the release date?

It’s fine to speculate. But as has been evidenced by at least the last 5 years of iOS releases (and probably longer), the release date of the GM is in no way determined by what people outside Apple deem the relative quality of the betas they are running on their devices. To insinuate otherwise is to ignore the facts.

The Upside Down
Since rumors are all pointing to a September release for the Apple Watch Series 6 and an October release for the new iPhones, when do you think the public version of iOS 14 will drop? Do you think they'll release iOS 14/watchOS 7 alongside the Series 6 and 14.1 with the new iPhones? Or release the Series 6 with *gasp* iOS 13/watchOS 6?

They ship iOS 14/watchOS 7 with the first hardware that requires it at the latest.

They usually ship it a few days before
though. I expect a September event with the GMs hitting a few days later.

These are uncertain times! iOS 14 could come out well before the new phones.

Most likely yes. The wildcard is that unlike most years when we have a fair degree of certainty as to when iOS will be publicly released, this year we don’t. If it is delayed by 2-3 weeks there is a possibility we will see one more 2 week turnaround. But I consider that less likely.
