I cannot believe this software has actually been released to the public.

Using the phone app/FaceTime/audio is still extremely counter intuitive with the mini call bar. Its so painful to get from the mini bar to the traditional call screen. You have to multitask to get there, selecting the mini bar, which is the proper UX way of doing it, just expands the mini bar with useless information.

Additionally, there is still NO method of clearing a notification banner. IOS 14 meant you could pull it down and press dismiss. This option is no longer available.

These bugs/removal of features are SO frustrating and even the simplest of core iOS usability is ruined.

I have no issues going from the mini call bar to full screen, I just tap on the mini call bar and it changes to the traditional full call screen.

As for your second item, are you meaning on the Lock Screen? Or just whilst actively using the phone & getting a notification?

Either way, the issues mentioned, if genuine, does not warrant the hyperbolic statement nature of your post.

Updated my iPhone X to 15.1 and now I can no long use Face ID and can’t even set it up!

Have you replaced the screen with a non-Apple screen? Read that could be an issue with FaceID.
I haven’t, the only thing that has been replaced is the battery. Could they be clamping down even harder on replacement parts? If so, I might need a guide on how to roll back to iOS 15.0.2

Thank you, but i tried those steps already. I think that this update claps down on third party battery repairs. Rubbish!
I've not heard that. Camera module, yeah, but not battery. Last ditch ... take a backup, DFU, set-up "as new" then try FaceID, then if that worked, restore backup and try again.

This year has seen me lose faith in Apple’s software quality and UI choices i.e. the changes to safari that they were trying to foist on us.

I’m usually someone who moves to a major OS version within minutes of it being publicly available but both my Mac and iPhone are still on Big Sur and iOS 14.

After this year - & the very shaky iOS 13 and 11 - I think it’s time for Apple to take a hard look at the procedures it has for its software release schedule and how it runs its UX (the proposed Safari changes were a debacle).

And unless there’s forthcoming major changes to SwiftUI/catalyst that necessitate a major version (or moving the navigation fully to the bottom of the screen etc), I’d prefer them to to stay on 15 and Monterey for the next 24 months & really focus on getting things into a far more stable state.

Not having to produce a release during a raging pandemic might help. . And before you say they just should not release then, I will refer you to something called the “market”, which would punish Apple severely if it did not release this year. That’s not an option now.

I’m sure the pandemic was a factor - but that’s why I mention 11 & 13, which were both very shaky releases with 11 in particular, never settling down.

And everyone was on the Apple campuses at that point.

When you say it’s because of ‘the market’ - iOS and macOS are free, of course.

I’d argue that the only essential engineering and UX work that Apple needs to do ‘for the market’ is to support new hardware features.

Everything else should not be tied to new hardware release windows.

I mean, is anyone going to buy / not buy an Apple device because notification bundles or focus modes are not there for launch?

Whereas if the camera and battery advances are seen lagging year on year, that’s likely going to cost Apple sales.

I’m perhaps less arguing for no new features…

And more arguing that Apple having a hard deadline - new hardware shop dates - plus them wanting to put as much new features as possible in the x.0 releases…

…Is having a detrimental affect on their overall software quality.

13 was a bit abnormal, due to the uncertainty with China. So, the only one you can really use is 11. No software release is ever perfect, and it’s subjective, as pick any release & you’ll find someone that had no issues & some that has all the issues.

You can have the address bar back at the top of mobile Safari. Is that what you were referring to?

It used to be that Apple's products simply worked. If you wanted or needed non-buggy software, you went with Apple. That no longer seems to be the case. I understand Apple is trying to compete in many areas right now. But they need to keep their eye on the ball. Products (hardware and software) that work well are their historical calling card. It appears we can no longer rely on this - much to Apple's peril. As for me, I'm sticking with iOS 14.8 and Big Sur 11.6.1 for now.

Trying to figure out if it’s a software or carrier issue, but I’ve noticed my cell connectivity has dropped off a lot today.

I have Verizon and updated to 15.1 this morning. Anyone else having issues with their cell connection dropping off?

Someone is looking back with rose tinted glasses. Never been bug free.

I saw a guy have two iP13s, he took one battery from one and swapped with the other… complete Face ID failure. He put the battery’s back again and it worked. He then swapped over the cameras, same thing happened.

It seems Apple is coding it’s hardware, so to speak, to each logic board which massively effects third party repairs - lawsuits pending ??

Yes, I know thanks. That's not it though.

To paraphrase Jason Snell who was talking about this on the Daring Fireball podcast (I think):

It's concerning that there's a group of - presumably very senior - people in Apple who thought that the Safari changes that we saw in June were pretty good and signed them off for the beta & WWDC.

It's almost the very definition of an unforced error.
