The encrypted backup will contain password information. You are conflating your disk being encrypted vs the iOS encrypted backup.

Only an encrypted backup will save all health and activity data. An iCloud backup does as well so a restore from either source will restore that data as well. I haven’t had to restore from my mac in ages but encrypted the backups way back when just in case.

13 ProMax originally done OTA and had a few issues (see post #195) so I did and encrypted backup on my MBP and did an ipsw install.

Couple of noticeable items for those who are wondering…
1. I had to redo all my banking apps for security and FaceID use - also any other app that uses security
2. My credit cards were still in Wallet & Apple Pay but I had to verify and have them all reapproved
3. System Data fro me never dropped to zero. About 1.5GB is the lowest I have seen. Currently sitting at 2.3GB
4. I have DM on this device for work apps. It has to be reauthorized
5. No, I have no idea what battery life will be … too soon.

Now for the issues…..
1. I am still having problems with Cell/WiFi. I predominately use 5G and 6e WiFi. I am mostly seeing my device dropping Wi-Fi for no apparent reason - or at least the status bar shows using 5G - no issue on any other devices
2. Even though I had a backup, I had to reload my Kindle Library.
3. I tested Siri and Alarms (I use a 24hr Clock with a 0400 and 1600 alarm) and when I ask for an alarm for 4 o’clock, it sets the next one in sequence.
4. I use Proton VPN and it is working well.
5. This device is hijacking my AirPods Pro even when in use on my IPP11 any time sound is played on the 13PM.
6. Some apps where you perform an in-app purchase for an upgrade (example: Hiya) you have to have a restore past purchase in-app to get the updated functionality

So far the device is running good and outside of the cell/Wi-Fi issue all appears to be good.

and yes, Spell Check really sucks. I am having an issue where it is replacing words with proper names.

Also as a side note, my employer has DM on mine and it requires an encrypted backup. I am sure others are in the same boat.

Curious what is your carrier? I have seen many people say cellular speeds and switching between 4g, 5g and mmWave has been better on the beta.

I’m glad it’s not just me. This drives me crazy. If I type “character”, I don’t want “Charmaine” or “Charlie”. If this was an intentional algorithmic adjustment, it’s very short sighted. The odds that they can predict a given proper name is infinitesimal. Don’t try.

I couldn’t for the life of me start a sentence with “guess” unless I slowly swipe each letter exactly.
How hard is it to get a dictionary right for a 2T company? And the most frustrating part would be when it changes words a few words into the sentence. Dumbf**s!??‍♂️

AT&T.
Speeds are fine and 5G here is a better signal than LTE. So far no data drops.

Biggest issue pre-ipsw was data would arbitrarily stop. Post ipsw 5G has been good. My problem atm is wifi will just vanish on the 13PM. Or at least the status bar indicates 5G and no wifi. No alerts or anything. Thankfully I do have unlimited 5G data.

Oh ok. Thanks for the info. I might install the beta later tonight or tomorrow via ipsw and share my experience using Verizon.

The advantage of doing the restore backup from the computer it’s a hard wired connection and it seems to restore quicker then from iCloud from the last time I restore from iCloud.

Do you have WiFi assist enabled? If you do, maybe try disabling that. I have seen people report issues when it is enabled. I have it disabled.

It doesn't know the word "computing", so I wonder if there are a bunch of people in, say, India, that are sitting there trying to guess which word I'm Wayne to type.

Yes, that was deliberate; I'm on my Macbook

Character character, an American thing?

Works fine on a British set up phone.

Encrypted back up to Mac then I've gone a different route, I've deleted all content and settings, so its like its just come out the box, then restored from back up when prompted.

Steps:

Quits all apps and restart your phone.
Restart your Mac.
Encrypt your back up to Mac.
unplug, then delete all content and settings.
When your phone restarts, plug back into your Mac and open finder.
Select when prompted your set up method, so mine was 'restore from back up' id just done.

just waiting now for phone to down load apps

Storage data was 8.27gigs.

I read an article on Macworld where the guy swears this is the only nuclear way to reduce storage data to what it would be.

➡️ EDIT: all done took me 40 mins but well worth it.

Storage data is 3.41gigs - The biggest loser was Photos. 4 gigs down to 978meg. Very happy with that!

LOVE the encrypted back up restore. Only two banking apps needed re-confirming. Everything else was still logged in or just used Face ID as norm. Definitely the way forward for me now, makes it even simpler.

Why are you all wasting your time doing this, just to temporarily clear down the storage data usage? It'll come back to where it was before in a few days.

I don't see it as a waste of time when its a simple process running along side me working.

Curiosity. And someone might read this and find it useful as their in a right state with their storage.

It would depend on your WiFi connection and/or your computer’s ability. An iCloud restore has always been very fast on my home WiFi. But I only have to do it when I get a new device. Backups to my computer, which I do about once every week or less, are just an “in case” action. An iCloud backup is done automatically every night so will always have the latest data compared to my computer backups. And they are automatically encrypted so all data is restored.

I just tried typing the word Character, no issue. Try doing a Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
