Turns out it was Instagram all along ... and only certain accounts. iPhonedo has been doing a lot of testing on this and conclusively narrowed it down to Instagram (though, not all accounts are affected). Here's his latest video testing the latest Instagram update which fixes the issue:

Instagram was updated last week and the issue stopped for me. Before the update, I had to force close the app in order to cool the phone down.

Same with the heat fix?
It should. Beta 2 released only yesterday and 17.0.3 came out today, it'd be weird if Apple was like "Damn guys, we forgot to release the overheating fix, we'll add it next time". Also for what its worth I haven't noticed my phone superheating. There was that time it did the initial update to the beta and since then i haven't noticed anything crazy.

Curious how the data was lost. I purposely put my phone into the Recovery Loop again to try to experience the data loss. Repeated the fix that I provide, data still there.
If you restore (either normal restore or DFU restore) it wipes your data. However at the end of the install it asks if you want to restore your data or start as new. So you would have to select a backup to get your data back. That has been that way forever. Not sure exactly what you are doing.

Not necessarily true in this case. The boot process gets hosed when trying to load a new FW. It doesn't wipe the saved data. Hence why I was surprised the data was erased. I re-created the boot loop and still didn't lose any data.

I'm very familiar with the process since the release of the iPhone.

Guys, I am tempted to go beta again with my 12Pro. It is already good for daily driver. if not I stay on 17.0.3

im running beta 2 on my 15 Pro, no overheating issues since upgrading to 17.1 in general and no excessive battery drains on phone calls. so far its working out well for me as a DD.

Just here to complain that I installed 17.1 beta 30 minutes before .03 dropped. I though no worries, I can restore to factory. NOPE. ☠️

All good Kkspire. We'll patiently wait for resolution or final release. Or as I my kid says, suffer in silence. :)

Since I installed iOS 17.1 Beta 1 (an now Beta2) to try to solve the overheat problem during calls, the camera shutter sound is not there in normal mode. I does work in portrait mode normally but not in normal mode. Anyone experiencing that as well?

just checked. works for me in both, however its twice as loud in portrait than it is in normal.....which I find odd all in itself. reboot doesn't change it either, must be a bug.

but iOS 17.1 in general solved the battery drain and heat issues for me. 2 hour phone calls and the phone is cool to the touch. ill take it.

Thanks!

Battery drain and overheating during calls has been solved for me too with beta1.
With 17.0.2, 1 hr call resulted in being very hot and battery dropped 30 % point. Now is cool and battery 2/3 % points for 1 hr.

Still have slight overheating when taking photos.

I haven't had any noticeable heat in the camera app as far as ive seen. that's weird.

Sound is there. Seems to be a bug...

I noticed a 4-6% drain on a 50 minute phone call yesterday while using AirPods Pro. Phone stayed cool. Could it be that the Bluetooth headset is the reason for the slightly higher battery drain on my phone during the call?
