There’s clearly something weird going on with the available space on ios17. Yesterday at 6pm I had 21gb available and today and 7am I had 34gb and I only deleted 5 pictures, I didn’t restart the phone.

There are also people on twitter/x reporting that they lost 10gb or more after updating to iOS 17.

You lost some of that "Other". They call it "System Data" now. I guess that sounds better. It's just cashe and junk files.

I have the “synced content” bug. Storage is showing my music library copied from my Mac at double the total size, under both music and synced content.

Anyone else noticing random increase in random app sizes? I’ve had to reinstall 6 apps since update to iOS 17, 2 of them being Apple’s own files app (it was taking up 1.5gb as compared to 20mb post reinstall) & contacts app (8gb down to 600mb).

I’m pretty sure Apple is now reporting cached data in the app size for apps now instead of in System Data. Supposedly cached data will be deleted if the device needs the storage, but it will also be deleted if the app is deleted.

i had several apps that stream video balloon in size, the largest taking up 50 GB. Unfortunately one of those apps is the Home app (8 GB). The only way to delete that is to remove all HomePods from your account (which is stupid) so I’m not going to bother for now.

Edit:

I just checked and Home is now using 55 MB, so it cleared nearly 8 GB on its own with further makes me think it’s cached data.

If cached data is showing up on a per app basis, what's under 'system data' then? that also seems to have gone up by around 6-7 gb (From 11 gb to 17-18gb) on my end.

Likely cached data for iOS itself, plus logs, analytics and other things as mentioned in the text description.

There was a problem in iOS 16 where the System Data would balloon to ridiculous sizes. Apple fixed that very late in the iOS 16 cycle, but I’m thinking they just hid the cached data sizes and in iOS 17 now show them in apps.

Posted this on the Battery Life thread, but also posting here in case folks are interested.

Not sure if this has been brought up previously...

If you are running macOS Sonoma and iOS 17, and are using the new widgets on the Sonoma desktop, AND the widgets are "iPhone widgets" (versus Mac widgets), watch out for some noticeable increased battery drain on iPhone. For example, I added an iPhone widget from my favorite snarky weather app (a radar widget) to my Sonoma desktop, and the battery drain on iPhone was noticeable. Fortunately, Settings / Battery / Last 24 hours clearly showed the weather app with a high percentage with "Widget, Background Activity" indicated. Deleting the widget off the Sonoma desktop and sticking to just Mac widgets took care of the battery drain. Just FYI.

Wait, are you sure? How is that even possible? I don't think the iPhone widgets on Sonoma use the iPhone as a "jump host", that wouldn't make sense...

So this new functionality to bump two iPhone onto another to share contacts is great and all but I am using two iPhone and naturally I always place them on top of each other to carry them but every time, I get a request on one of the iPhones now (assuming it thinks I want to share data between those two). I suppose there isn’t a setting to ignore a specific phone?

Glad it’s working with yours.

But I think it’s a bit unreasonable on the other poster’s part to call the recognition software “stupid” for not being able to differentiate between two nearly identical looking animals from a photograph. It’s amazing that it can do this at all, tbh.
When its a painful and emotional experience its damn stupid to me. Sorry if my reaction is a bit visceral but I only lost one of my cats recently, so this is really upsetting.

This is the sort of thing that it would help Apple immeasurably if they just documented the change. They really hurt themselves when they don’t, as it leads to all sorts of conspiracy theories being bantered about.

It would also help if they stated, as I suspect to be true, that the increased “sizes” will have no impact on the phone’s operation and that any excess cache data will be jettisoned when and if needed.

I am sorry for your loss. I have two elderly dogs and I know that day is coming soon for me as well. But do you really think it is necessary or proper to blame a hardware/software company for not being able to computationally distinguish between two nearly identical animals? Especially when you can avoid your emotional reaction by simply not going to the Pets & People section of the photos app for a while?.

It’s unfortunate that this happens but it doesn’t make the functionality stupid, either to you or objectively.

I understand what you mean but the thing pops up and shows my cats mixed up so i need to put them in order now otherwise its even worse, maybe that's just me. If i could just batch select animals/people that look similar and be done with it that would be better especially if its humans or pets that have passed and which may bring up memories that you may not be ready to face just yet.

I wish Apple would think about the pitfalls of getting it wrong. I know my friends and my pets, I don't need my phone to do this every time I plug my phone in but going forward it is nice to click on your friends and now pets and look back, when you are ready to do that. Anyway time to move on, its just a feature that was not thought though well with regards to pets it seems and as I said if I could click on all of images of one cat and add his name that would be better. ☹️

My iPhone 12 PM is frequently complaining it’s too hot to do anything since upgrading to iOS 17 even though the phone itself is only a little warm. It doesn’t feel hot.

For example it wouldn’t charge during CarPlay because it was too hot. It wasn’t syncing photos when charging because it’s too hot. I’ve never seen that message with iOS 16.6.1 or earlier.
I had that on 16.6.1 during the summer when the ambients around my phone were hot (air con not working.

Hi guys,

Can you please check if AirDrop works between your iOS/iPadOS 17 devices and macOS Monterey 12.6.9 (21G726)? Ever since updating Monterey a few days ago my MBP is no longer seen in the AirDrop window. Not sure if it is iOS or macOS related, though, so will post it in both. 🤔

Update: Forgot to mention! I can AirDrop stuff from the MBP to iPhone (MBP sees it), yet I cannot see my MBP when I open AirDrop sharing screen on my iPhone. Also, my MBP in question is not (and has not been before) signed into any Apple ID or iCloud account. However, Airdrop still worked fine between them just before the latest Monterey update.
Having issue with AirDrop - no longer shows up on my iPhone iOS 17.

Mac Studio is Ventura.

Will not show any other nearby devices that usually showed before iOS 17.

Very annoying.

The optimize battery setting is super aggressive in iOS 17. I had to turn it off completely to keep my iCloud account synced.

Apple almost never documents changes in how iOS works. They barely document changes in the features of their own apps and almost never document bugs or bug fixes. It’s just the way they work.

If you ask Apple, iOS only has like 3 bugs which are documented on the developer portal. For example, I can’t use ScreenTime as it’s broken, but Apple says it works great.

No, it’s all or nothing. You can only turn the feature off entirely, not for a specific phone.

What does optimize battery have to do with iCloud syncing? It just stops the phone from charging past 80% until it thinks you will use it?

Great here on my iPhone 13 Pro and iPad M1 Air. I’d say slightly quicker and slicker on both, and I’ve not encountered any bugs yet. Worth it just for the improved autocorrect ;-)
I’m impressed with ios 17 so far looking forward to how it will evolve over the coming months

Hopefully it will be picked up and resolved soon by Apple. For me AirDrop works fine between iOS 16 and iOS 17 devices for contacts, but goes random with “Everybody for 10 minutes”. Bizarre…
