Quite interesting how many EU-users will actually use this feature. I personally won't do that. 👀
agreed, not to mention I'm just not really sure what "value" this brings. Ok sure Apple is the app gate keeper, but they are for a reason. What is side loading an app really going to do that is an advantage?

Unlike the EU mandating USB C, which is honestly a great move for consumers, Sideloading just doesn't present a value.

Do you guys have any hope for sideloading in 17.1? Can't wait, hope they won't postpone it for the next spring :(.
Apple will only implement that if they are painted into a corner, currently it's like Mousehunt trying to pressure Apple to doing anything that the EU wants.

For entertainment while we wait for updates.

Thats if Apple even bothers to give it to those of us in the US. Keep in mind currently on the EU is requiring them to do it. They have no compelling reason to release it in any other place currently.

Yeah agreed. I pretty much just assumed this would not be available in the US. Being that its a software side feature that they can just flip a switch on.... Unlike USB C which is hardware and would have presented manufacturing challenges and added costs to make 2 different port phones.

Genuine question, but why?
I'll give you just one example "rocket for instagram". And a lot of other powerful apps.
Exactly, makes no sense. If people get a hard on about side loading apps then go to Android.

Makes no sense for you, how can you speak for the others? I think it's up to each how to use their phone. Android? you must be kidding.

I do think Apple has some legitimate, non-non-competitive reasons for not wanting this to occur though, mainly relating to security. There are definitely higher risks of malware entering the system via unscanned sideloaded apps than apps that at least get some scrutiny (albeit automated in most cases) via the App Store.

Still I think they will be quite safe, after all they will have the same permissions as App Store apps. Of course they could include keyloggers and all (App Store apps could too) but won’t be able to send messages, calls, check your pics without permission, etc…

Yes, I’m sure even sideloaded apps will still be heavily sandboxed and subject to the same security features as the rest of iOS. A sideloaded app is not the same thing as a fully jailbroken device.
The only risk would be an app that could take advantage of as-of-yet unknown exploits to then gain root access to the device.

What’s that? It’s no good saying random words without details to support your point.
It’s right the first google result (and on that site you can also find other useful and powerful apps):

Code:
Rocket enriches Instagram client with loads of features! Starting from saving posts, reposting, checking if other users follow you and many more.

Features:
- Save any photo to Camera Roll.
- Save any video to Camera Roll.
- Hold down on an image to view high resolution version of it.
- Hold down on a video to view high resolution version of it.
- Double tap or hold on a profile image to view it in full screen.
- Mute and Unmute users from home and activity feed.
- Hide sponsored posts.
- Show following status on user profile.
- Share images using default iOS share sheet.
- View direct messages without notifying sender.
- Easily toggle feed layout between grid and list with a press of a button.
- Confirmation alert when you double-tap a post to like.
- Tap times inside a post cell to show full timestamp.
- View stories without marking them as seen.
- Download photos and videos from stories.
- Manually mark stories as seen.
- Show entire gallery instead of last 24 hours in story maker.

I dont have to support my point, its just my decision about what and how i want to use something. You or someone else is not obliged to use it.

This app seems like something that would subvert Instagram's ToS?

I can see how having these functions directly inside the app might be useful, but most (if not all) of this can be easily done with external tools, none of which break ToS. Most use instagram’s own API functions.

Using a hacked version of the main app probably is against ToS in itself, though.
