Great thing about beta and beta testers is that they report that stuff to Apple so that myself and other non beta-testers get to enjoy the finished result :)
Glad the beta-testers are around, should really be appreciated more I think.
Thank you. 🙏🏻. I enjoy testing the betas, I hope you enjoy 17.3 when it releases to the public. I think that Stolen Device Protection will be a pretty nice feature! 👍🏻

What are the bugs? I hadn’t heard of any, and I don’t think I’ve encountered any. At this point, I guess we’re probably looking at a beta after the holidays sadly.
Doesn’t know you are at home for some people, me included.
And one action is not yet protected by biometrics, ie Reset all settings. That will bypass protection and open up your passwords and allows the thief to add their own biometrics. At least it let me do it. More testers required but don’t use your main phone to test it.

Ok, I never heard about that. To be honest, I haven’t even tried Stolen Device Protection. Hopefully those bugs shouldn’t be too hard to fix. 👍🏻

I’m going to give my grand daughter my test phone in the holidays and ask her to try it (she knows my passcode) to make sure I didn’t overlook anything

The Stolen Device Protection looks like something Apple that was perfected in house for quite awhile before adding it in iOS 17.3 beta. I look at this like Universal Control which took several incremental iOS releases to perfect. Right now it seems perfect for some, but risky for others to use, like the fellow who just moved, and had no established home location that his phone recognized to unlock his phone when something happened. It's an example of Apple getting as much feedback as possible to perfect this feature.

It really should use pinned Maps locations not “smart” familiar ones IMHO.
In any case I’m retired and spend sometimes all day at home and the stupid thing still says its unfamiliar!

17.3 is projected to come out on januaury 22nd
It's a rather safe bet this time for January release date.

There is nothing about the current beta of 17.3 that makes me unhappy. I do feel that the stolen device protection is an Apple work in progress , don't use unless your faceID is working very well and the iPhone has your home location solidly pegged. Sometimes with wearing face mask, glasses, hats, consumers find faceID is problematic. :D

Merry Christmas! Looking forward to what Apple brings this year, but cautiously anticipating Vision Pro and the rise of AI with iOS 18.
For the year looking forward speculation:
I was disappointed that AR enhanced apps that IOS/IPadOS 17 could have supported, went missing at WWDC 2023. Now we have to wait to see if WWDC iOS/IPadOS 18 offers that rather then only VisionOS w/Vision Pro solution.
https://www.apple.com/augmented-reality/
Apple has the world’s largest AR platform, with hundreds of millions of AR‑enabled devices, as well as thousands of AR apps on the App Store. And because Apple hardware and software are designed from the ground up for AR, there is no better way to experience AR
I really think Apple is hiding this against iPhones/IPads just to help promote that headset.:D

As for AI that is as bad as AR as far as what Apple might do. While we see some effort about Apple convincing news service partners utilizing AI for searching articles, the #1 issue is still the limited syntax with Siri.

Merry Christmas gang! 🎅

FaceID literally works in a pitch black room. I honestly think the people that are complaining about FaceID have faulty hardware as I've never had it miss a beat.
