I didn’t think 16 was minor, but I guess different people have different ideas of what is minor. 👍🏻Every year they say that and it’s so minor so not getting any hopes up

Ya, I agree, there clearly seems to be a big push to better AI at Apple, and based on techniques Apple seems to be testing and possibly pioneering for using AI large language models stored on-device, I wonder if Apple will launch an on-device large language model form of Siri. Some new AI features could even roll out in iOS 17.I disagree Kylo. “They” don’t say that every year.
Apple, for its part, of course, says nothing officially until WWDC (I’m sure they do leak some backchannel stuff, though, for competitive purposes)
“Analysts” like Gurman and Kuo will usually start revealing some details about the upcoming OS releases in Jan/Feb each year (4-5 months out from beta releases).
Directionally, these guys (esp Gurman) tend to be pretty much on the money. They get details wrong, of course, likely due to course changes at Apple in the months leading up to WWDC. And, of course, there can be intentional misdirection by Apple (as we saw to spectacular effect last year with Analyst941).
But I don’t recall an instance where a meta directional datapoint one of the big players revealed was entirely incorrect.
The big rumored changes this year appear largely to be AI driven. That doesn’t seem to be a big stretch given (A) Apple is virtually the last major player to enter this space (their preferred position is not to be first but also probably not to be last) and (B) the signs have been there that this has been an emphasis (job postings, etc). So I think it’s safe to say they know they need to make a splash to keep up with Google and Microsoft.
Also, with the impending release of the VisionPro, large swaths of their software development teams likely have been re-tasked back to iOS/iPadOS after at least a year spending much of their time on VisionOS.
So, while I think it’s too early to tell for sure that there are going to major changes this year, I’d say the signs are at least pointing that way.
I lose hope whenever Web Browser updates get touted as massive OS updates.....Every year they say that and it’s so minor so not getting any hopes up
I think there's a good chance we see a release on Jan 9I’m hoping they release a new beta either today or tomorrow. Sometimes they’ve released betas on Thursdays as well, so that’s a possibility too. 👍🏻

Basically, yes, lol! 😂🤣👍🏻So your hoping for a beta all this week then 😆😂
Maybe try giving them some extra treats? 👍🏻😂 (Happy New Year to you as well!)Happy New Year fellow speculators ... what's the latest guesstimate for Beta 2?
I'd ask the cats and fish, but as today is the first time I've seen them in 7 or so days, they're ignoring me. Don't panic, their next-door "pet auntie" looked after them.

Ya, I’m not really good at the predictions, I’m mainly here to discuss possible future features in these betas, and see other people’s predictions. I’d say if I had to make a firm prediction, I’d probably guess tomorrow if it’s going to be this week. But again, I’m not as versed in when past betas dropped, and I’m fairly new to the Beta tester team. The first betas of iPadOS 17 are the first Developer Betas I had ever tried before. 👍🏻You should go ahead and throw Friday in there too so you could cover all your bases lol
Today is doubtful imo since everyone is just getting back from vaca... Unless they had it queued up and ready before the holiday.
The rumor mill when it comes to Apple OS details is almost zip. All this last year I said Gurman has no source for anything but hardware leaks. The speculation about AI is mainly about Apple not publicly stating their plans and several others who market AI make Apple look bad. Nevermind the controversy has now reached the US Supreme Court of the lack of laws that keep it in check. (Chief Justice comments yesterday). So the only thing we see are guesses to what might be added based on some future product rumor it seems. 2023 goes down as one of the worst periods of knowing anything preceding WWDC. I guess Apple is very happy about that. Example Vision Pro.“Analysts” like Gurman and Kuo will usually start revealing some details about the upcoming OS releases in Jan/Feb each year (4-5 months out from beta releases).
Usually as you said it’s not during this first short week for Apple after New Years.Releases from next week
Apple has painted themselves into a corner with IpadOS. Even the stage manger shows awful RAM and storage requirements compared to what MacOS can do with 8 GB Ram and 256 GB storage. I always wondered about the RAM/storage efficiency between the two OS’s. Also the security implementations of iPadOS stems from iOS so any transition would mean Apple would literally have create a new foundation to how iPadOS works IMHO. A very tough task this far along to achieve.I also think that the iPad and iPadOS is coming close to maturity as a platform, and I think we’ll see a lot more Mac-like functions added to iPadOS in the near future. With the same Apple Silicon as the Macs on board, the pro apps like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, and more of the basic functionality such as Stage Manager, I think iPadOS will continue to grow and improve, adding more robust features to certain aspects of the system.
What do you mean by transition? I don’t think that iPadOS will completely replace macOS, or they’ll become one system, or anything like that. But I do think that iPadOS will continue to gain more macOS functions and features, or at least Mac-adjacent functions and features. Like I said, I think they’ll remain distinct systems, but they’ll share more in common. Vision Pro with VisionOS proves that different OSes can still share a lot of features and even apps. And I can definitely see a future in which the iPad and Mac either share most of the same apps due to developers porting over by their own free will (see Octane X, Davinci Resolve, ZBrush (announced for release on iPad next year), Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, etc.), or will share the same apps due to an Apple-made system similar to Catalyst. Come to think of it, a system like this could be billed as an additional perk of the App Store: if it’s in the App Store on your Mac, it’s also in the App Store on your iPad. Of course some Macs don’t exist in the Mac App Store, but maybe a system like this would incentivize them to move to the App Store, or maybe iPadOS could utilize Mac apps even unoptimized. I already use an iPad as my primary computer, and it’s been getting super easy to do so the last two updates. 👍🏻Apple has painted themselves into a corner with IpadOS. I don't know how familar you are with the evolution of Classic Mac OS to MacOS X then to present day MacOS. That represents a very long journey in the development of a OS to where we presently are. But even at the very beginning Classic MacOS offered floating windows as seen on the earlier Xerox star which was the basis of Apple's first windowed OS Lisa OS.What do you mean by transition? That makes sense, I think I understand what you’re saying. Honestly, I actually don’t have a very long list of Mac features that I think should drop on iPad, because iPadOS is already robust enough for me to use as my primary computer. I do think some more options for formatting external drives could be nice, though I think it’s also kind of niche. I actually think that iPadOS is actually very robust, and like I said, I don’t think it should become macOS, or be replaced by macOS, unlike some who trash the iPad Pro and iPadOS. I also like macOS and don’t want it to be replaced by iPadOS either. The main thing that I am referencing to is more Mac apps making their way to iPadOS, and a few more features shared between them. One feature I’d like to see implemented the same way on the iPad as the Mac is AirPlay Receiver. There is an AirPlay Receiver function now on iPadOS 17, but it currently only works with the Vision Pro. I’m hoping that other devices will eventually work with it as well, like the iPhone. 👍🏻I don't know how familar you are with the evolution of Classic Mac OS to MacOS X then to present day MacOS. In comparison iPadOS is still very young. iPads were iOS based 2010 to 2019, iPadOS 2019-to present. The separation occurs with iOS 13, and iPadOS 13. So the most recent iPadOS is only the 5th version of the OS which is currently like an extended version of iOS with some differences related to app interface, and obviously resolutions used.
By transition I meant something on the order of the change from Classic Mac OS to OSX which was based on the multi-platform implementation of NextStep. Will we ever see something like that for tablets?
Because Apple always in the labs had MacOS running on different processor the processor based transition from Intel to AS was attainable even it it took 3 years to really port it, optimize it, and covert everything to native.
The iPads have only seen you progress from the A SoC family to M SoC Family. It was always ARM based. Still iPadOS has not shed its iOS relationship which of course is far more manageable and easier for developers to pursue given the differences. Even if you connect a display/keyboard to a iPad it's far from like using a Mac. A lot of iPad users prefer it to remain as such.
I willing to bet that Apple has MacOS running on tablets in their labs.
BTW I am curious what MacOS functions do you want to see on the iOS/IPadOS 18? I happen to like the ways things are presently on iPhones and iPads? We still even have apps on the iPhones before any other Apple OS to contend with. It's not a perfect world, but hopefully 2024 will be another wonderful year as seen at WWDC.
