Possibly why we are seeing a potential RC2 or new build next week.

If we get a RC2 next week they'll have to push it back a week. I'm guessing the final release will be a new build.

I really don’t know where all this RC2 talk is coming from. Why do posters here think there needs to be “one more version”?

Whether that is a second release candidate or a X.x.1 or X.x.2 update, it doesn’t matter. Logic and experience each show us that a second version is unlikely in most cases. And in those cases where we get them, the reason is frequently obvious in advance of its release.

Either way we’re getting 17.4 on Monday or at latest Tuesday.

Makes total sense to keep PWAs on WebKit, as before. This might actually encourage users to stick with Safari, which is good for Apple. 👍
I think they initially decided to pull PWA support because it was unclear whether or not the EU would deem there limitation to WebKit as self-preferencing, and decided to reincorporate when they got assurances that it wouldn’t conflict with the DMA. That’s at least my guess. Maybe they’ll improve PWAs in iOS 17.5! 👍🏻

Someone earlier noted a Twitter account that's private had posted something about a different build number for 17.4.
I found the account but wasn't able to see anything. Apparently, they're 'in the know', so they say lol

I saw that reference also. But (and I know you know this; this is for others’ benefit) a new build doesn’t necessarily mean a new RC.

It is not uncommon for the public release to be a build or two higher than the corresponding RC. I’m sure there are tweaks Apple makes that necessitate a recompilation of the software (incrementing the build number) but doesn’t warrant distributing and testing that build prior to public release.

Given that we haven’t seen an RC today, I’d say that’s the more likely course.

Here’s an interesting tidbit from Mark Gurman this morning:

This appears to confirm the thought I had earlier in this thread that 17.4 was rushed out to deal with the EU DMA issue and that normally it would have launched later in March. Sounds like that will still happen, more or less.

Maybe, if it was rushed, it’s better to wait until iOS 17.4.1, or even iOS 17.5 at this point. I mean, what I want is a stable, efficient and polished release, and I’m reading a lot of complaints of iOS 17. Hopefully by iOS 17.5 or 17.6 the system will be perfected enough to have a smooth experience.

Coming about three weeks earlier than the last year does not necessarily mean it was “rushed”. It is not like Apple have learnt about the DMA provisions in February this year.

I am personally quite curious to see what potential benefits iOS 17.4 can bring to me, being in the EU.

We should know how well (or not) it goes pretty much 24 hours after the public rollout, so if there are no red flags popping up by then, I am installing! 😉🖐️

Good! I’ll be reading all of you on the thread to see if it runs smoothly and efficiently, and if people is still bothered by many bugs. I’ve read poor keyboard responsiveness among other glitches and bugs. Otherwise, like I said, I’ll wait until iOS 17.5. Honestly, I’m pretty happy with iOS 16.6.1 on all my devices and, aside from the latest security patches and the interactive widgets, I’m not missing much more.

Yeah, as an European citizen, I’m curious as well. However, I’m a bit disappointed because most changes only apply to iPhone, and it is on the iPad where I could really make use third party App Stores.

I only use my iPhone to make calls, communicate through chat apps, take some pictures every now and then, play some sparse games very occasionally, and check Apple Maps for navigation or public transport info. Oh, and reading the news from different blogs and websites when I commute. That’s why I’m so happy with my SE3, it is light, compact, robust, and meets all my needs. So I really don’t see how third party App Stores could benefit me on the iPhone. The only thing I’d really be happy about is the interoperability between WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, and other chat apps, but sadly it seems that is not gonna happen.

My M2 iPad Pro, on the other hand, is used almost like a laptop (with the iPadOS limitations we all know). That’s where I’d see real benefit, being able to use many apps I use on my Mac that are Open Source or aren’t allowed on the App Store. With the power of the M2 chip, on a portable and efficient device like the iPad, the device could really shine. But sadly, the European DMA only applies to iOS , literally, not iPadOS.

Today is a good day for the release of iOS 17.4.
What I don't know is what will happen with watchOS 10.4? Will they release a stable version without RC, or will there be another beta due to some problem that Apple has detected...

WatchOS or tvOS sometimes skip a seed. The only thing happening is the earlier release of iOS/iPadOS 17.4 today or less likely tomorrow.

As I say repeatedly here, don’t judge a release based solely on comments you read here and in other forums. They will almost always skew towards the bad. Virtually no one posts about how great a particular feature works for them.

My advice is do an archived back up on whatever version you’re on, download the new version and if, after a few days, it’s not to to your expectations, roll back to the version you came from (assuming Apple still signs that version).

iOS/iPadOS 17.4 for new iPads has to be ready as those devices are being produced and shipped already.
My guess is, we are getting 17.4 today, new iPads either have that version installed or a slightly newer build.
