Still weird that no iOS 17.4 RC2 is coming out today, as Apple announced they would re-enable Progressive Web Apps in the final version for EU customers. So they can either enable that server-side, or they just skip the RC2 and make a final version that is different from the first RC.

I think it’s pretty apparent that this is either a server side thing or can be reenabled by ticking a flag in the developer (Apple’s) configuration settings.

No need for a separate RC to redeploy an existing feature.

I think EU law also requires giving access to the NFC chip, and the section where the apps with access were going to be shown disappeared in Beta 2 and has not returned in the RC. I suppose this will require a new compilation, because I don't know if it will be possible to enable this option on the server side.

The Upside Down
In their statement on Spotify, Apple mentioned that they are set to comply with the DMA in days, so a Wednesday or late-week release seems possible.

Yeah, and it wouldn’t really require any fundamental change to iOS for the rest of the world, because we never lost PWAs, so I’m guessing it’s an easy to re-enable thing.

That’s why I think it’s a flag tick. No recompilation required.

No. No, a Wednesday or late week release is NOT possible. With the exception of the announced release date of major OS versions (16.0, 17.0 etc...)Apple characteristically does not advertise in advance when it's going to release software. However, it is plain as day that it must release 17.4 by midnight European time tomorrow to comply with the EU DMA rules. They are not going to miss that mark.

Note also that even with a release occurring tomorrow, the Apple Spotify statement remains accurate.

What is with all the "an RC2 is definitely coming!" and "Maybe Apple will release 17.4 sometime after March 5th" statements here. Many of you making these statements have been here for a long time and should know better. At least read the other posts before making statements like these. You will thank me later.

Tomorrow we will clear up doubts, but I think there is a high possibility that there will be a new compilation to add the options that appeared in beta 1 and were removed in beta 2. Not so much to show the region, but to display the apps with access to the NFC chip, since European law will require giving access to banking apps to make payments outside of Apple Pay through their own apps such as on Android.

I think we should be getting iOS 17.4 today! 👍🏻
I don’t think so, they haven’t dropped the new iPads yet and there could be code in it, also it’s likely they will release all the final versions together and most were rc only yesterday, they don’t normally release final versions a day after the rc

It's possible new iPads could get released online with maybe just a simple announcement or something, with the ability to order today for delivery on Friday. Could release 17.4 today then, as they usually seem to do, releasing an update days before product launch so that more devices are current.

I think they may also announce new iPads today via press release, like they did for the MacBook Air yesterday. If that’s the case, then any code that references the new models wouldn’t be an issue. But they definitely have to release it before tomorrow. They also could always release a 17.4.1 release for the new iPads, but I doubt that, though I think that would be more likely than them not shipping iOS 17.4 today.

I don't think that EU compliance will matter if it's a matter of days. I predict they will release 17.4 next week on Monday.

And I don’t think going 40 MPH in a 30 MPH zone will matter… 🤦🏼‍♂️ Unless they were granted an extension by the EU, they will have to comply with the deadline. That means today is the most likely release window for iOS 17.4.

I really expected a 9 AM Eastern press release announcing new iPads. Hence clearing the way for 17.4 today to comply with the deadlines. So far I was 100% wrong on this one lol.

I am still expecting iOS 17.4 release today, Tuesday, 5 March to meet the DMA deadline.
New iPads can come out later this month and have iPadOS 17.4.1 just before. So I guess we were wrong linking iOS 17.4 release “delay” from Monday to Tuesday to the new iPads. It might have instead been related to Apple’s wish to reduce traffic congestion with other RC coming out, wishing to test a new build a bit more, or just to hold it off till the last moment of the EC deadline for the sake of it. 😉 Nevertheless, I believe it should still come out in a few hours.

I believe you are wrong on this one. If you had an option to do something today to avoid a fine or do it later in the week and face (year another) fine, what would you choose?
