Actually I think it fairly likely it will come. There probably won’t be an iOS 17.7. But there will still be security updates to iOS 17. So I think it will come and relatively soon.
Considering the hardware spec cutoff for all the AI stuff, they probably will have to support iOS 17 for a bit longer, no? Quite possible they go into the 17.7's

With the constant flow of critical updates from 3rd party component manufacturers (read Qualcomm) and known bugs i'd guess 17.6.2 will be released in the near future and before iOS 18 is being released.
Well prob see smaller incremental updates for iOS 16 as well in the near future.

If the bugs are corrected in the latest iOS 18 public beta I'd guess its an even bigger chance we'll see 17.6.2 within a week or two.

Edit: And I hope to god they don't rerelease it with another build, so that people can stay sane :-D

Very well could be tomorrow. Saw this is an article regarding Spotify and Apple:

"As of September 3, when Apple roll out their new iOS update, the physical iPhone buttons to turn the volume up and down will no longer work: instead, users will be served with a notification from Spotify which tells them that they will instead need to use the volume slider within the app."

I disagree I think we are just to close to Ios 18. Think there will be a 17.7 that comes out the day of Ios 18 and the changes they have been working on will be in both that and Ios 18

Zollo keeps saying 17.6.2 is in the works but I think he is referring to the anonymous leaker that posted that the day before the 17.6.1 re-release came out. Since the re-release there is no sign that 17.6.2 is being tested at this point

Just listened to Butch and he said he expected this to be a very quiet week with no Ios releases. Looks like it will be Butch vs Zollo

No point to make a 17.7 if its only small incremental updates or security fixes. 17.6.2 is more likely.
There are known official bugs around that needs to be corrected and there might be security fixes that's currently undisclosed.

Looking at what Android has patched a few weeks ago and considering that iPhone and Android phones share a lot of components i'd say its a chance we will see a pile of security patches if Apple weren't ahead of things and fixed this in 17.6
In the Android 2024-08-05 release there were 18 qualcomm fixes alone where 12 of them were wlan related and 6 of them closedsource components, all of them listed with "severity high".

It would be strange if some of these fixes wouldn't apply to Apple's hw that are using qualcomm chipset.

There is no place sadder than last year’s speculation thread on the cusp of the release of the next version.

I'd say its prob likely that 17.6.2 will be released alongside iOS 18 in two weeks time along with an iOS 16 and maybe 15 update.
There will prob be security patches included in iOS 18 that needs to be applied to earlier OS as well.

Why would there be a 17.7? Are there any major expected updates to iOS 17 aside from bugfixes and security updates?
When iOS 18 comes out, there's most likely going to be a new set of similar APIs for iOS 17 to keep everything in line, and correct, there most likely won't be anything new other than some bug fixes. But they'd need to introduce a 'Point Update' for this, so iOS 17.7 seems ½ likely.

Good point, never thought of the compatibility aspect before. So has this been the case in earlier OS as well that they do introduce new things such as APIs once a new OS is being released?
Trying to understand why they wouldn't introduce them earlier? Maybe its a case that its still beta and they want a finished OS before introducing those changes?

iOS 17.7.1 could be the last update before Apple focuses on iOS 15, iOS 16, and iOS 18 updates...

iOS 17 devices can upgrade to iOS 18 so very little chance that iOS 17 will receive updates like iOS 15 and iOS 16 after the release of their successor/newer version...

Spot on, its only the iPad pro 10.5 really that they stupidly won't allow getting iPadOS 18.
I would like to think it would have made life much easier for Apple if they allowed all devices that run 17 to update and just drop support for updates to 17 and point towards 18.
