Thanks! Yeah I wonder why they decided to keep notifications separate in the first place.
Notifications were redesigned only a couple of years before the DI came on. Since only the Pro phones had the DI, a redesign of notifications was probably not warranted, if all models really do get the DI this year, it might start to make sense for a new notification system.

Good point. I’m scared it’ll just end up being iPhone 15 exclusive for whatever reason

Please don’t be mad at me, but I personally don’t want that space filled with buttons, because in certain circumstances I accidentally push the language selection and the dictation ones. I have to go to the settings and disable them.

But hey, as long as they are optional, I’m good with it, it’s just I think Apple leaves an empty space there for a reason (accidental touches).
I feel it the same way. For me the keyboard layout is absolutely ok.

I would have it as an option in Settings for those that want it. I wouldn't want to see it in the app switcher though because it would encourage closing apps which iOS is supposed to managed for you.
I do remember closing the apps on my android device couple years ago to speed the phone up, but I can’t remember when I did that on iOS last time. Not really feel the need for that.

Oh boy, I’m with you. I find more and more apps keep dumping more icons and options down there RIGHT by the white bottom bar, and I end up starting the App Switcher more than anything. I personally would want LESS there, or at least move the whole thing up just a tad.

It’s time! We need these icons. Mac OS icons meet iOS 17? 👇

I would love having those neumorphic icons on iOS, as well as a simplified finder (I know we have a files app, but once it is more on pair with the macOS file manager, I’d like it to be renamed into Finder for consistency).

However, I don’t see that aesthetic change coming in iOS 17. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but I see iOS 17 as a minor update and pretty continuous with iOS 16, just like iOS 14 was for iOS 13. But for iOS 18 a big refresh of the aesthetics of the operating system could be a reality.

I don't know if I'm a fan to be honest. What annoys me about the Mac icon style is they are photo-realistic versions of icons that are essentially symbols. But then at the same time you have some that include real life objects. It's inconsistent.

Take the Safari icon for example, it's supposed to be a compass but it's just a hollowed out blue circle. It started life as a real compass in OS X, then a flat symbol of it was created for iOS 7 and now that symbol is being made photo-realistic. And why is it sunken into the white background, is that part of the compass? Surely it should sit on top of the white background. It's weird.

Then compare that to something like GarageBand or Preview which have photo-realistic objects in them. Why a real guitar and looking glass but no real compass?

Preview_icon.png

These two style don't sit together well at all. And then you have the one I dislike the most, the App Store:

This icon goes back to the Safari style of making a flat symbol photo realistic. But it also carries over the breaks in the 'sticks' where they overlap. Clearly this is to represent a shadow and makes sense in a flat icon but in 3D? The sticks should overlap.

Personally I think Apple need to go back to the drawing board with the icons if they are to run across all platforms and develop a consistent approach to them. It's been long enough.

Personally, I’m actually kind of hoping for the opposite, that Finder will be renamed Files, or at least adopt the Files app icon. The smiley face is kind of weird, and doesn’t really have anything to do with files or file management. The folder icon for the Files app conveys its purpose much better. When you’re new to macOS and see the little smiley face icon, the first thought that pops in your head isn’t “oh look, that’s a file manager!”. I get that it’s had that icon for a very, very long time, and some people would be outraged if it was replaced by the folder icon, but I think it just makes a bit more intuitive sense in conveying what the app does. But I totally agree that the Files app should get all or most of the Finders capabilities.

You know what? I agree. After the Yosemite redesign, the Finder icon has been a bit weird. We all accept it -and even like it- because of nostalgia and being used to it, but I agree with you, the Files app icon is much more straightforward, and represents better the app.

I get that many people would feel like Apple was killing the soul of macOS, or at least an important part of their identity, and I don’t blame them. But I think I wouldn’t miss it if Apple replaced it with the Files app icon.

Like to be able to sort or re-organize the setting app. There are a few I use regularly and it would be great to be able to put those items on the top of the setting sceen

I like that! The dynamic island has so much potential- I’m really hoping they add more functionality to it like your concept in iOS 17

Be cool if say you were typing an email out, you asked Siri for a location or web page, but, in settings you had an option inside DI that Siri opens new requests from the DI when using certain apps, so the location or web page would preview/drop down from the DI, half over the top of your email, you could copy it say and then paste it straight into the email.

How fluid that would be and you’ve never left the email window or had to swipe up into another app. This could work smoothly for iMessage too, a window would drop down from the DI with your photos, tap one or multiple and it loads them into the iMessage you’re writing in. Quick. Simple. Fluid.

Inspiration was from @HuNay concept mock up.

Like a long press where you'd see Copy, Cut, Paste, and Look Up? So you can ideally tap the exact spot in the email, long press and select Siri (or whatever they'd call it), and say "add current location" and boom 💥

That would be so nice! I really hope Apple does something like this since rumors are pointing towards the DI staying around for at least 2 years

Oh I’m so glad my wish for deeper DI integration resonated with you guys. I’ve been thinking and maybe it could show a dot like it does with the camera/microphone indicators but have it be another color – just like a notification LED. Except you can tap and hold to bring up a smart reply menu of sorts. Depends on which app sent the alert of course.

Also many other random ideas I forgot. It’s 88 degrees so naturally I was losing my mind in this heat. :p

It’ll be around a lot longer than that at the pace things have been going, especially considering the trickle-down design patterns as of late

This first one is probably specific to people with 6.7” screen sizes but I would really like some tweaks to the Home Screen to make better use of that bottom section where currently the search button sits in not-so-glorious isolation taking up almost enough screen real estate to fit an entire extra row of icons which is what I would like Apple to find a way to do. Now that we have Home Screen widgets that can take away a lot of icon slots I would love a way to keep the same widgets I have now but in addition have an extra row of icons at the bottom to give me single-press access to 4 more of my most frequently used apps. The biggest challenge would be finding some other way to easily access search but there is so much unused space on the Home Screen of a 6.7” device that only a tiny bit of reshuffling would be needed to make that bottom area heigh enough to fit another row of icons without excessive (or possibly any) vertical compression of the existing spacing. Maybe I’m in the minority here but personally I have never once in my entire 14 years of iPhone ownership used that search feature at the bottom of the home scree.

I have the same complaints about both the 11.1” and 12.9” iPads where the home screen layouts are ridiculously inefficient. There Apple actually took a step back in (I think) iOS 15. At one point it was possible to keep the left-side widget panel on screen all the time and you still got the same number of Home Screen icons, it’s just that they were more closely horizontally spaced but to my eyes still in no way overcrowded. Now we can’t do that anymore and have to swipe left to see the widget panel which means that there is significantly less info-at-a-glance content on an iPadOS 16.x Home Screen vs what we got a few years ago.

I’d also like to see some serious bug squashing and focus given to optimising battery life.

And finally, while I don’t expect it for what is rumoured to be a more minor iOS 17 release, I would like to see Live Activities extended so that the user is able to specify on a per-app basis that they can also be viewed on their Apple Watch (the content would of course have to be reformatted to fit the square Watch screen). That would go some way to giving Apple Watch users back some of the functionality lost when developers like Uber discontinue support for their Apple Watch apps.
