I am not a developer, just curious to try out new things; Always installed PB2 and above (in past).
Now the software update itself is giving me an option to select developer beta or public beta.

Question over here is (if known), is there a difference between developer beta and public beta in terms of features, performance, apps, etc. etc ?

Depends. Since all iPhone models use the same SoC, the A17 could bs part of the delay. I don’t mind if the Pro‘s get a later release date (they have done it before).
All iPhone won’t be using the same SOC take the IPhone 14 they got the A15 so the IPhone 15 may get the A16 why the pro get the A17

It’s looking likely I was right for both, instead of just the first part!

Yeah called that early last week too.
Couldn’t see why Apple would bring the PB earlier and just stick to the same schedule. There’s a reason for it being this way.

PB starts to come next day or same day, once the Developer Beta hits weekly cycles folks.

It’s the same BUT if the dev beta has a major issue they won’t release it to the public. Normally it’s dev, it baked for a day or two and then public to make sure it’s not something major.

With but one exception that I know of, the public beta is the IDENTICAL software to the corresponding developer preview released a few days/hours before that public beta. You can tell this is true by looking at the software version in Settings>General>About>iOS Version (tap once to see the current version, which in the case of iOS 17 beta 4 is 21A5291h. There is about a 99.9% probability that the iOS 17 Public Beta 2 will be that same software version when it is released.

Being the same software version, all features, apps, etc.. are exactly the same. The only time you would see any difference (I think as I don't have the public beta available to check) is whether the Developer menu is present in the settings (it appears on mine just below "TV Provider" and above the settings for third party apps).

Is it too early to speculate what iOS 18 will bring?
All I want is macOS icons transitioning into iOS 18. That should be the #1 priority.

Although I’m going with next week, and I’m on DB anyway, so doesn’t affect me, I’m hoping PB2 comes today for those on OB. It’s not likely, but it’s not impossible either.

I will never stop asking for separate volume sliders for alarms and the expansion of Call Log so it would record indefinitely, not just 7 days!

I respect that!

Would you prefer VisionOS icons embedded into iOS then? 🤔

Because the iPhones screen is a lot smaller then iPadOS displays or particularly MacOS displays. it serves no purpose to utilize a more 3D looking icons, and also anything akin to a 3D looking window/dialog. I know some like iOS to look more like MacOS, but consider how finite a iPhone displays resolution is in order to provide the maximum amount of a GUI comparably there are reasons when the icons remain 2D. The attraction of latest iOS 17 GUI is that of the bright OLED high contrast display associated with a very colorful set of icons using a colorful background of your liking.

IMHO not sure we will see anything from Apple this coming week unless there is a 2nd DB4 for rare MacOS issues (kernel). The PB obviously didn't happen which leads to at the earliest next seed Friday of this coming week or more likely during week of Aug 7th. DB4 to DB5 was 12/14 days last two IOS XX.0 releases.

In support of this from an UX-er's perspective, it's as much for UI reasons as also for UX. Apple would rather keep UI minimal even at the cost of UX sometimes (i.e. Big Sur toolbars), so making UI less minimal without improvement to or even a worsened UX is out of question.

Why lack of improvement or even worsened UX if they make the icons more detailed? Because on iOS you tend to remember apps' positions by place rather than icon. When you open an app there, it's muscle memory rather than you actually looking for the icon in most of the cases - just try replacing something in your dock with another app and you'll see how you accidentally keep opening that app instead of the one you just replaced. Apple knows this very well. Couple that with a small screen where things are already visually active with widgets and other icons and it's easy to see their reasoning.

What about PB2 then? Do they skip it altogether or what? Unless something is really wrong with DB4 (which does not seem to be the case), we should still get the PB this coming Monday or Tuesday, right?

The first PB was based on DB3. If a DB has enough serious issues (kernel/memory leaks, failed installs) even if still rare, they have the option to skip issuing a PB based on it. This has happened before where they have skipped seeds when one of the OS's has issues. The next PB would be based on DB5 as an example. It's not like MacOS 14 is like WatchOS 10 where they just skipped a seed. They usually issue iOS/IPadOS/tvOS/MacOS together with seeding.

If they do release DB5 this coming week to correct something related to DB4, I guess it would make sense to base PB2 on it as well? Or they could re-release DB4 and base PB2 on it shortly afterwards, just as they did with DB3 & PB1.
Releasing db5 doesn’t have anything to do with correcting db4 and is just a bug fix release just like any other beta.

I’m just guessing that PB2 would be based on prior week’s DB4 before the next day releases kick in.

Sure that DB5(PB3) is already coming this week? Wouldn't it rather be next week, then switch to weekly?
