So that seems to be an issue with "Apple Devices" on Windows and nothing to do with IPSWs bricking devices. I've been downloading every update from the developer site and installing them on my 15 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max with ZERO issues.
my experience so far is that updating from iOS 18.X IPSWs is bricking devices 100% of the time in a way that was not happening with any iOS 17.X IPSWs, so what do we call this issue and more importantly, does it still exist? I’m not sure what the argument is.

So far it has failed completely on iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and an iPad Air. This is of course several weeks ago, before iOS 18.1 RC was available. So it either is still doing it with these new IPSWs or not. We KNOW the issue existed, nobody has been able to definitively say whether or not it still does.

Windows users were able to manage their iPhones using Windows PCs since day 1 in 2007, or even earlier when it came to iPods, and it was always without issue. It shouldn’t be failing so catastrophically in this manner, and we definitely shouldn’t be handwaving the issue and covering it up when it does exist.

Alas…
Many missing icons after StandBy until taps on each folder, or a forced restart.

<rant> Stop posting screenshots and expect me to pixel peep what's wrong with your phone. Use your words! </rant>

Two bugs I have been experiencing seem fixed (fingers crossed).
  • In betas 4-7, dark mode with light icons was not showing light icons in the share sheet. I got my light icons back. They are still dark in the Settings app for whatever reason, but I will take this as a small win.
  • My CarPlay has only respringed once and no disconnects. May be too early to tell. I was having major issues with it restarting twice and then disconnecting until I turned off the car and restarted the phone. Hope that nightmare is finally over.

The dark mode folder bug still seems to be there. If you have dark mode enabled, open a folder and then tap away to close it, the folder background will flash brightly briefly. This happens on my iPhone 16 Pro and 11.

On Apple Watch I’m getting update apple account settings. Then gets stuck with the circle wheel.

Anyone else notice this?
I've had this before. The only solution is to reset the watch and reinstall. This worked for me. Crazy bug.

Still not getting lock and unlocked notifications from my matter enabled smart lock… Currently liaising with both Nuki and Apple about this.

Still no mail haptics on watch when sound turned off, but assuming that is a watchOS issue which will not be fixed for a long time as is with handwashing reminders et cetera

Siri, as expected, is still utter garbage and I hold out exactly no hope for that to change when we get the new ‘improved’ version sometime in the next decade. Yes I’m aware it’s the same version in 18.1

TBC…

I am debating with myself whether to install the RC of 18.1 or stay on 18.0.1 because there the battery life is good with my 15 Pro Max…
What do you guys think ? And what’s your experience with the 15 Pro Max?

Sometime in the future I have to update - so what’s your opinion?

I'm still having issues with notifications on my Apple Watch. In the last beta, notifications were inconsistent. I often missed iMessage notifications completely. This is still a significant problem for me. I have submitted feedback.
I've seen your issue (I think). I found that I had enabled Intelligent Breakthrough and Silencing to my focus modes. Turning it off immediately resolved this issue. If true, not sure how I could ever turn this back on :(

..similar predicament with iOS 18.0 on 16+

I would say if you want AI go for it, if you dont care hold off a while.

update down the road when a few more updates are out to make the gamble worth it.. unless this somehow fixes specific bugs you are experiencing and have been waiting to have addressed. which this may or may not have.

but I always am paranoid with this stuff. Notably, a lot of people on 18.0.1 experienced regression in many ways from 18.0

If 18.0.1 is working well for you I’d stay with it…I know you had a lot of heat and battery issues with the 18.xx betas. I know it’s been a rough few months with your 15PM and if it’s solid and settled then stay—if not maybe consider RC.

With that being said Beta 7 and RC have not felt like Betas at all. Smooth, good battery life, no heat issues expect wireless CarPlay and charging….not charging on wireless works great. Also, wired CarPlay and charging has no heat issues. Casting is quick and solid…remote works great, everything is syncing, camera good, solid reception ,just working well so far.

Your mileage my vary, but my battery life has been very good with 18.1 betas on a 16 PM. Off charger since 630a and I am at 94% at 1130a.
Thanks, I think I will stay on 18.0.1 for a while. I’m in Germany so no AI for me sadly, not worth it to upgrade…

I think you’ll get a more specific answer if you list the bugs you are talking about. Not everyone has the same bugs.
When one song finishes playing the next starts ok but the display still shows the previous song playing and the currently playing song next in queue, the app crashed when this happens

There is also a visual bug: when I press the icon to see the lyrics of the song and then I press on the cover of the song, the lyrics icon remains activated even if the lyrics are no longer displayed on the screen

I could continue to list a couple more bugs, but I honestly think that these two are the ones that have happened to me the most since I updated to iOS 18 (some are present since the August betas, I already reported it to Apple through the feedback app)

• The first one happens when playing music from my HomePods. Hate it. Still seeing it on iOS 18.1 (HomePods are still on 18.0, so really hoping next week’s update fixes that)

• The lyrics icon bug seems to be fixed for me on iOS 18.1

If you’re having issues with IPSW, why don’t you try OTA instead?
Haven’t had any issues on my 13P besides the ones listed as bugs.

Thank god iOS 18.1 RC fixed Spotlight, and the search in Photos, Mail, and Notes, and the AI summaries, which had been broken for the last 2-3 betas. Was almost about to do a full reset.
