Generally speaking, new hardware would most likely require a "point release" and not just a "point.point" release. I'd assume new hardware would be tied to iOS 18.4 / macOS 15.4.
An exception is when iOS 13.4.1 was released on April 7, then it was released for the 2nd gen iPhone SE on April 23 when it came out.

If 18.3.1 is tied to the new devices, I can see it going either way. They could release 18.3.1 first, and then release it for the new devices separately when they’re released. Or, they can do 18.4 first and release 18.3.1 all at once for every device when the new devices are available.
I’m pretty sure they would do the later. I’m unaware of any time Apple released a new version that adds support for new hardware before it’s publicly available. Usually Apple releases an update that adds support for the new hardware when it becomes available, typically around a week or more after the product is announced. And considering that we’re still only about a week out from 18.3 public release, I think that timeline would make sense. 18.4 beta 1 next week, and 18.3.1 in about two weeks or so.

Yeah, if they’re going to release new hardware earlier than April, I think the update that adds support for the hardware would have to be 18.3.1. 18.4 wouldn’t be available to the public until April, so I doubt the new hardware will require that update to add support for it. So as I’ve said in another comment, I think chances are good that 18.3.1 will drop in about two weeks or so, and the 18.4 beta 1 would drop next week to kick off testing.

Couldn’t agree more, this thread has seriously downgraded for me. Used to enjoy it and the value of information flowing through was incredible.

Now it’s just a load of total nonsense because it’s seems you can speculate about anything from the weather, how useless Apple is and bickering.
Agreed. I miss when we could just speculate about iOS and new features and not be harassed. I’m excited about the expansions coming to the App Intents framework! I think Siri Shortcuts will be supported by more apps, and will have more options for the apps that do support it. I’m still unclear on exactly how it will be implemented because I don’t think Apple has discussed it that much, but from what I’ve heard, it seems it will be partly automatic. I’m also interested in Siri’s On-Screen Awareness. I wonder if there will be a new setting in the Privacy & Security section of the Settings app for adding the ability to allow a third-party app to use screen content similar to on the Mac. I think this would make sense because it would allow users to disallow this access to Siri if they wanted, and would allow users to allow similar access to several different kinds of third-party app that would benefit from this functionality like third-party AI apps.

Also, Personal Context looks like it will be the most revolutionary aspect of Apple Intelligence in my opinion. That could make a big difference in streamlining workflow.

I totally agree! If 18.3.1 is going to add support for new devices, then it likely will not drop next week, and would be about 2 weeks out from releasing.
I thought I read about Feb 18 being a possibility right after President’s day as if something occurs as far as new devices. Otherwise we go into March for the usual possibilities.

Yeah, it definitely could be even later than 2 weeks, I guess I should have said about 2 weeks at the earliest. 👍🏻

I'd assume those devices along with the new iPhone SE that's rumored, would already have a "current" OTA release installed, meaning there's no need for a point.point update. And considering these are basically rumored to be upscaled models of the iPhone 12 series, not much new there to worry about as far as API's go, which would require a "Point" update as opposed to updating current API's with a "point.point" update.

Ok so i guess the big question for next week is which comes first 18.3.1 or 18.4b1..... Or do they drop them on the same day (doubtful).... What do you guys think?

OK, we will see 18.3.1 early next week and 18.4 B1 either near the end of next week or the beginning of the following week.
Would match with what happened two years ago with iOS 16, where 16.3 released in the last full week of January, 16.3.1 released at the top of the second full week in February and 16.4B1 released near the end of that week on February 16.
That’s my speculation.
I also speculate that we will see 18.3.2 sometime throughout March, probably around the launch of the M4 MacBook Airs.
There you go

iOS 18.3.1 will likely drop a week after new devices are announced, which would place it dropping in probably around a week and a half at the earliest. I think we’ll see iOS 18.4 Beta 1 drop early next week, and then 18.3.1 will drop a week or two later with support for the new hardware once it becomes available. This would also make sense since we just got 18.3 only a bit over a week ago, and Apple rarely pushes out x.x.1 updates that close to the first release.

Was just seeing this, too.. here in the states, most folks will be pretty useless at work on Monday, if they go in at all. The day after the Super Bowl seems to get more attention than MLK day… even though not an “official” holiday, I’d think it’d be enough to put in the board a year ago to decide to push off the release by a day or two.

I’m going with Wednesday next week for 18.4b1

I think hopefully we’ll get the iOS 18.4 Beta 1 in a couple days, and then 18.3.1 in a week or two when new hardware becomes available. 👍🏻

So why haven’t they?
Everyone predicted last week.
I’m sure that guy thought that as well. Then it didn’t happen. Hence next week. If he had posted that a couple of weeks ago and it happens, then that would be something.

Let’s start this week with optimism! Tim, be merciful and hit the button that releases the endorphins to all our beta receptors (and to our phones) 😂
Come on 18.4! We are ready for you!
Yeah, I’m pretty sure we’re getting the first beta for 18.4 this week, probably just a couple days! 👍🏻

Well, I can say this with confidence, at least. If 18.3.1 drops before 18.4b1, then that is what I am installing first.
However, if we see 18.4b1 come out first, I am going that route and skipping the other.
Personally, again, my best guess is that the 18.4 beta will be available by Tuesday. ;)
