Clearly at the WWDC announcing iOS 18 Apple mentioned this:

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that puts powerful generative models right at the core of your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It powers incredible new features to help people communicate, work, and express themselves.

Writing Tools are available system-wide, and help users rewrite, proofread, and summarize text.

The Image Playground API delivers an easy-to-use experience where people can create fun, playful images right in your app. Genmoji bring fun new ways to communicate by providing the ability to create an emoji for any occasion.

And Siri will be able to access text displayed in your app, and take hundreds of new actions in and across apps using the App Intents you make available.

So we will see image playground and Genmoji in 18.1… Mostly likely in the near future betas.

Correct me if I’m wrong but Apple was showing both during the WWDC…

One simply has to look on the dev portal to see. 😁
I don't disagree that's what "June WWDC Apple" intended. However, it is possible that the actual deployment of these image creation features has proven more difficult than expected, and we might not see them in 18.1. Or maybe that's why the 18.1 beta period may be longer than most (assuming that 18.1 doesn't appear until October, which is something I am still not convinced about). If, however, it is a protracted beta period, it may be that the first half of the beta period will have been devoted to the writing tools, and the second half will be devoted to the image tools. Who knows?

The bottom line for me is that, given the unique nature of these features, we cannot simply say that because we haven't seen them in 18.1 thus far, we won't see them.

Various reports and ex-employees pretty much confirmed that AI is a kneejerk reaction by Apple, as evident by the lackluster launch scope. They got caught cold by ChatGPT and co. and have been scrambling to produce something that competes.

Anyone who believes this thing has been in the works for half a decade, let alone more than 1-2 years is delusional and will be severely disappointed come public launch. They’re playing catch-up as we speak, 2/3 of the things shown are pretty much proof of concept tier functionality.
They’ve been working on AI since at least 2022, when they built Ajax, that would have taken some time to build, so yea, you’re looking over 2 years ago.

I am not sure how that puts Genmoji and Image Playground in 18.1. Clearly Apple didn’t say one item of AI would be released here, and one there, but they also did not say it would be grouped together. All we know is that sources have said parts were delayed, and that there were items that would not be released until 2025.

It's obvious that Apple has been working on small "a" and small "i" artificial intelligence for many years, most of that time referred to as "machine learning." Things like identifying plants and animals in photos, identifying language and text in photos and images, transcribing voice to text and even doing "Siri" things like operating device controls.

The revolution that gets us to big "A", big "I" Artificial (or Apple) Intelligence came with the advent of ChatGPT and the widespread use of large language models. This is where Apple, I think, got blindsided a bit. I think they knew LLMs had a future. They just didn't know that that future began in 2022. They were more likely thinking it would be more like 2026 or 2027.

By early 2023 it was evident that LLMs had a future in computing and a potentially bright one, at that. I think at that point, Apple realized that it needed to invest in this technology in a big way and started hiring accordingly. Obviously early 2023 was too late for Apple to bake anything LLM/AI related into iOS 17. it was probably even too late to integrate it into iOS 18, particularly with the toll the VisionPro / VisionOS was taking on development resources. So I think Apple hoped it could provide some nice feature and UI updates in iOS 18 and save serious AI stuff for iOS 19, 20 or even a twentieth-anniversary version of iPhoneOS/iOS in 2027. The explosion of AI tools (ChatGPT, Bard/Gemini, CoPilot, and even things like Grammarly) forced their hand and, once VisionOS was in the can and Project Titan was shelved (and then canceled outright), Apple turned its full attention to developing LLM-based tools. And I think the Board/Senior Management realized that, like it or not, these tools had to be available during iOS 18. Which is how we got to where we are now.

As far as the "whiz-bang" features of AI, Apple is "behind". However, its not evident yet whether those flashy features will be the future or will simply be the "Clippy" of the early 2020s. Apple is quite good at figuring out what works well for its users. Time will tell if they are able to do so here or not.

And here are the writing tools in action, summarizing (quite well) what I wrote above:

  • Apple’s AI Journey: Apple has been working on AI, particularly in machine learning, for years, focusing on tasks like photo and text identification, voice transcription, and device control.
  • LLM Revolution: The advent of ChatGPT and large language models (LLMs) revolutionized AI, leading Apple to realize the potential of LLMs in computing and invest heavily in the technology.
  • iOS 18 AI Integration: Due to time constraints and resource allocation, Apple initially planned to integrate significant AI features in iOS 19 or later. However, the rapid emergence of AI tools like ChatGPT and Bard forced Apple to accelerate its AI development and include LLM-based tools in iOS 18.

This is actually what I find interesting. I think the writing tools can be helpful ( not something new as most all AI do just this), but the difference for us (collective here because I assume most are Apple user across the board or why would be here) is that it’s baked into our OS. Don’t have to download 3rd party. Again not revolutionary, but massively helpful. The Genmoji and Image Playground are for sure whiz bang stuff that I think fall into the stickers and Memoji category. They are fun here and there, but they don’t advance our use of the iPhone. But new AI big A and I Siri are what really is the useful feature that could set Apple apart. What they do “better”.

Now the issue is when that will come. Again like you said, Apple was/is behind and they need this to really get into the ballgame. I think.

Important Note: this is all just my opinion, I am not stating anything as facts.

Replace 2022 with 2023 and you’re spot on.

The last report goes as far as saying Federeghi trying ChatGPT as late as early this year changed course for iOS 18 to be an AI focused release. Heck they got grilled last year during investor calls ("we got AI, look it’s detecting pets in your photos!"), they only took people seriously during the investor call early this year.

I love Apple and their products, but I also think one has to call them out for being very ignorant about trends and usually late to the party (LLM, RCS etc).

I think the image playground will be quite popular. Although the negative side of that will be not knowing what images are real and which ones have been altered.

When my son passed in February I was using an S24 ultra. There were a lot of pictures for the slideshow at the funeral that needed things edited out. Sammy’s image editing AI was excellent at this(kinda scary too). You couldn’t tell I had removed so many people from the pictures, the blank spaces were filled in perfectly.

If Apples is similar it will be awesome in some ways and I think a lot of the selfie nuts will use the heck out of it. Unfortunately it’ll also mean more fakes. Time will tell

Maybe I am reading this wrong, but Image Playground and what you are talking about with editing imagines are two different things. Image Playground makes an image for you based on what you tell it to make. It’s a total AI image, but not editing an image in your library.

Do you guys want to create a dedicated AI thread, as we already have for Apple Maps, for example?

Even if there was, this thread would always tend to get back to AI as 18.1 gets updated each week. There will always be speculation here about AI, which then leads back to several post about it.

I think you are misunderstanding me: Of course, Apple didn't start jumping up and down following last week's Pixel event. What I am saying is that it’s been obvious for a while now that Apple is not at the vanguard of the development of AI tools on phones. The Pixel event just served to reinforce that idea. Now, not being at the forefront of a new technology may not be objectively a bad thing, as Apple usually takes features developed first on other platforms and makes them uniquely Apple, frequently more successfully than the originator. But here, Wall Street has gotten involved and has decided that AI is the "next big thing" and that it would punish companies that were not embracing it sufficiently. Apple was one such company until June.

WWDC gave Apple some breathing room. But it has to show progress on getting these features out to market, or Wall Street will turn up the heat again. Given that OpenAI has released ChatGPT 4o and Google has released these new Pixel/Gemini features, Apple is going to really be feeling it, and they know they need to play catch-up.
@gwhizkids Look at what he says Bill Gates.

Bill Gates predice el declive de la IA actual y apuesta en su lugar …
