I'd really like to see custom routes when planning out driving directions in Apple Maps -

Much like you can do when viewing Google Maps in a web browser (you can click-and-drag the proposed route and make your custom one).

It seems logical that they would add that as a web tool on the new web version of Maps…which means they will probably never do it. 🤣🤣🤣

What I read online is correct…even in non-DCE areas, there’s now some simple shading to give the illusion of elevation changes if you look carefully. Or something of the sort.

Saw that on Reddit this morning while in Australia and checked the area around here.::I have to agree.::elevation definitely showing more so than usual.

On a flight to Canberra now and it’s surrounded by hills….can see the detail more than I noticed when looking at it a couple of weeks ago when checking out my trip.

And have actually been using LookAround and flyover so much since I’ve been here. Just knowing it exists everywhere has helped me somewhat when going to restaurants and other places I’ve never been to before.

And I know I said it above, but the walking directions and ability to customize the route has been awesome.

What a boring Maps thread this year... :p

C'mon Apple...give us something!!

Part of me always knew this would happen though. Maps has actually arrived at the point that it is in enough countries and good enough to stop some of the whining. Not ALL of the whining, but dang...for those of us that have been in these threads for the past decade, what a difference!

Using it halfway around the world for a couple of weeks, it was spot on for directions (even though I was always a passenger and not the driver), POI's were as up to date as they are in the US (yes...always room for improvement), and having Look Around and or DCE was way better than I expected. Have never had that where I have lived in the US since launch and it is missed now that I am back home.

It's Apple's fault. It will soon be a year since Apple has not released an update for the new map data and the DCE. It seems that Apple will release everything at once this year. The good thing is that Apple continues to monitor new countries, so Apple aims to expand the new map data to as many countries as possible. Now, it would be great if Apple could speed up the DCE to achieve complete coverage and not just a few cities in a country.

Ya know…I got really excited when a notification popped up about a reply to this thread 😂 I was thinking it was FINALLY going to be a comment saying we got an update. Nope 😂 Darn!

I used it on my road trip to/from Canada. Worked quite well, overall. Pronunciation of the French road names was…better than I thought, but certainly not perfect. lol

I switched my car and my iPhone over to the metric system at the border. I downloaded offline maps beforehand knowing I’d be driving through a lot of areas with no cell service, and it worked like a charm. I love how I can toss on airplane mode in Maps and see immediately where my offline maps boundaries are. Far, FAR better than what Google Maps offers.

Also, I like how on iOS 18, zooming in permits the highway shields and such to scale up and become larger now. For some road shields, this permits more details to show through.

Hey, I just noticed something neat. Now that my car supports wireless CarPlay, I just say “Siri”, and she answers. Although it was probably capable of doing that already….

But on iOS 18 CarPlay, if you ask Siri what the weather is, a little pop up appears on the screen with the current weather.

When I asked Siri when the Mets were playing, a pop up appeared with information on tonight’s matchup.

I wonder how many other things can pop up?

2 weeks ago I saw car branded with Apple Maps sign driving in Slovakia. It got me thinking that if we will see lookarund feature in foreseeable future, also for Central Europe countries.
Or it was just lost. Hope it is not the latter 😁

Noticing some slightly different spoken directions lately. While navigating through complex exit interchanges where not all exits are necessarily numbered, Siri will now say things such as "Go past this exit, then...."

Also, when it's time to take your exit, the black directions box on the screen, besides showing what you need to do next, will beneath it show "NEXT EXIT", or something like that.

Weather, sunrise/sunset, sports scores (so far)

First time using DCE on Apple Maps. I took some screenshots in the Paris region. It was really a great experience and very accurate. I can't wait for it to be available in more cities!

Does anyone here know if there is any way for Maps to "integrate" with Calendar so that you can access or search for your next appointment's location directly? It seems crazy that it isn't clearly available, and I can't find any useful info online anywhere. Thanks.

Over in the iOS 18.2 DB 1 thread, this was posted, “Maps now supports more advanced transit features like displaying ETA in route previews and switching bus lines while in active routing”

https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...hanges-and-improvements.2440784/post-33509646
That’s very useful! Sometimes it’s worth it to switch to a different bus when transferring, but the new bus travels a slightly different route, and drops you off at a different location. At least then you’ll have directions from that location.

This works for me from iOS 17, maybe even 16, but 17 for sure. Just add the location to your calendar appointment, that’s it. Sometimes the direction suggestion shows up directly on Apple Maps (via CarPlay), sometimes I have to tap the calendar app in Apple car play and it lets me choose the destination of my appointment.

Thanks. But can't get it to appear. Confusing.

Maybe select “location suggestions” in the calendar app settings so Maps understands it as a “real” location versus one just typed in that it has to decipher…..if not already selected.

You should be able to tap the location in the calendar app and it should open Maps.

There used to be a shortcuts.app shortcut for this.

I’m feeling mixed on the new voice so far.

In general, the tone is nice. She seems to try annunciating the directions so they’re easier to understand. Sounds a bit more human. Although she likes to pronounce “Midtown” as “Meedtown”. lol

But it still needs some tweaking. The volume seems to fluctuate mid-sentence, with the first words spoken being louder. The speed at which she’s speaking feels like it changes a bit throughout each sentence also, which catches me by surprise.
