I wondered if I should have waited before buying that Apple TV 4K a few months ago. That said, I figured it may be coming, and I've got to watch several months of 4K with Dolby Atmos that I wouldn't have otherwise. I can watch 4K Netflix on my TV without Apple TV, but Atmos doesn't work through ARC. I figure if I don't need HDMI 2.1 or gaming support, then the old Apple TV 4K should be sufficient.
Perhaps going to A12 is a cost saving measure? It's a considerably smaller die size than A10X, and likely runs much cooler. The current Apple TV with A10X has a fan. Would a fan be necessary for A12? In fact, would that be the only difference between the old and new Apple TV 4K models? Maybe they're basically the same product, aside from the SoC and perhaps memory - 3 GB --> 4 GB.
BTW, it should be noted that Gurman didn't say a new Apple TV 4K was coming, and seemed to imply that it would just get a software update.
If a $179 Apple TV box comes with A12, a $329+ iPad should as well.
Indeed. Also if yields are good, A12 should not be that expensive for Apple. It seems the main problem with 7nm+ cost may just be because the yields suck.
That just seems odd, A12 is much less graphically capable than the A10X. Seems like it would be a downgrade for the ATV when playing games on 4k. Maybe he meant A12X?
In Geekbench 4 Compute, A10X beats A12. It appears the same is true for Geekbench 5 Compute as well. However, in several gaming tests, it A12 beats A10X.
In any case, both should be OK for gaming.
Personally, I've always bet on A12 as I don't think it makes sense for educational or otherwise iPad to lack support for ARKit 3.
Hmmm... I guess that makes sense. I hadn't really thought along those lines.
