A10 is out of the question, I think. Because Apple will most likely keep selling the 8 and 8 Plus, A11 is very possible. They'll have to produce the chip anyway and if they also use it in a probably pretty popular iPad, cost per chip could/should come down.

Maybe get a new iPhone too while you're at it.
Nah. Waiting for 5G. A10 is OK for one more year, esp. since the 7 Plus has 3 GB RAM and a decent camera setup, and I got a new battery just 8 months ago.

Also, I would have kept my A10X + 4 GB iPad Pro for a few more years if my wife didn’t want it.

I agree A11 is a possibility.

However, it should be noted that A12 die size is actually smaller than A11. If yields are similar, the cost to a large extent is directly proportional to die size.

Thus, A11 cost may not be as cheap as you might think vs A12, and in some scenarios, A12 could actually be cheaper, esp. if Apple decided to downclock the A12 for the iPad to further increase effective chip yields.

In addition, A12 may be beneficial for the Face ID functionality (although not necessary).

They're not putting the A12 in there and it's not going to have Face ID. And unfortunately it isnt going to be laminated.

I think the education model will be like the eMac (Education only) and the iPad Air 3 maybe price dropped and the only consumer model... well, with Steve Jobs era thinking. But perhaps unlikely these days.

I wondered if I should have waited before buying that Apple TV 4K a few months ago. That said, I figured it may be coming, and I've got to watch several months of 4K with Dolby Atmos that I wouldn't have otherwise. I can watch 4K Netflix on my TV without Apple TV, but Atmos doesn't work through ARC. I figure if I don't need HDMI 2.1 or gaming support, then the old Apple TV 4K should be sufficient.

Perhaps going to A12 is a cost saving measure? It's a considerably smaller die size than A10X, and likely runs much cooler. The current Apple TV with A10X has a fan. Would a fan be necessary for A12? In fact, would that be the only difference between the old and new Apple TV 4K models? Maybe they're basically the same product, aside from the SoC and perhaps memory - 3 GB --> 4 GB.

BTW, it should be noted that Gurman didn't say a new Apple TV 4K was coming, and seemed to imply that it would just get a software update.

If a $179 Apple TV box comes with A12, a $329+ iPad should as well.
Indeed. Also if yields are good, A12 should not be that expensive for Apple. It seems the main problem with 7nm+ cost may just be because the yields suck.

That just seems odd, A12 is much less graphically capable than the A10X. Seems like it would be a downgrade for the ATV when playing games on 4k. Maybe he meant A12X?
In Geekbench 4 Compute, A10X beats A12. It appears the same is true for Geekbench 5 Compute as well. However, in several gaming tests, it A12 beats A10X.

In any case, both should be OK for gaming.

Personally, I've always bet on A12 as I don't think it makes sense for educational or otherwise iPad to lack support for ARKit 3.
Hmmm... I guess that makes sense. I hadn't really thought along those lines.

Whatever the specs of the 10.2” iPad, I just picked up a 9.7” for $249, no student discount.
I was planning on getting a 10.5” air 3 but for exactly half the price I did not see enough features that I might see in real world use to justify paying twice the price.

Good deal. The Air 3 has the added advantage of supporting the Smart Keyboard Folio which for me is transformative. However, YMMV, and it adds even more to the cost of course.

I have a bluetooth keyboard from an iMac that is small and easy to carry in a backpack that I can use, but I am really surprised at how well the keyboard on the iPad works!

Greg Joswiak: Touch ID will continue to have a role

When asked if Face ID would feature on more products, Joswiak told us: "Certainly, we'll continue to put it on more devices but also Touch ID will continue to have a role - it's a great technology on our iPad lineup and we don't see it going away anytime soon."

We don't know if that means Touch ID will just continue as a legacy feature, or it is going to be a new under-screen feature in the future, or if they will introduce new products with the traditional version of it (not counting the iPhone 8 rehash in 2020). I do see its continued use on some Macs though, unless they finally decide to put better sensors in the cameras on Macs.

If this is really that One More Thing, then it's got to have Face ID.
I don't get how you come to that conclusion. Hopefully, we will find out if you're right soon.

In the article you linked to on Face ID, Joswiak says: 'This is a pretty costly system.' I really don't see that they would include it in their entry-level iPad at this time.

The A10X in the Apple TV requires active cooling (a first for an A series chipset, I believe) going to the lower wattage iPhone A12 might allow them to make the device cheaper by removing the active cooling assembly? Looks like you only get about 2/3 the graphics performance with an A12 so maybe that's too big a decline though? If it's the A12X they might be able to remove the cooling as well if it's able to sustain higher performance without throttling (which seems to be the case with the iPad pros).

lol no. How bad would this show have to be for an entry level iPad to be the focus of the OMT?
Ask Mark Gurman. He’s the source of the rumour.

One more thing usually isn’t just an iPad. If it really is an iPad, it needs a distinct differentiating factor, and Face ID would be a good one. Just a shift to 10.2” without other significant changes would not be enough IMO.

Mark Gurman says this under his post: 'Didn’t say this would be called a “One more thing.” It’s a one more thing is in the sense that this is the “other thing” coming.'

That appears to clear up any confusion, which was probably caused by it being linked to CoinX's post.

Yeah, he backtracked.
