I think I still see more value in the ipad Air 2 at the moment, the ipad's are getting too big and for me the ipad pro's will be too heavy physically. So I don't have any intention of getting the new ipad pro .

The iPad Air 2 is 437g.
The iPad Pro 10.5" is 469g.

So 32g difference? Not exactly a fatty. :p

Sold!

Does 10.5 honestly have a usb 3 port?
Amazing I often find usb lacking via air a nuisance.

Decisions....
In fact it is USB3 for camera connection kit. It is what I am looking for.

I am going to wait for you other Air 2 users to post your thoughts after you have had the Pro for a couple of months.

Then I will make a decision.

I'm in a slightly similar dilemma, choosing between the Air 2 and Pro 10.5".

I'm currently an iPad 3rd Gen user looking for an upgrade as the A5X chip is definitely showing its age, about 5 years old now.

Here in Malaysia, there is a retailer clearing Air 2 64GB LTE for MYR1799 which is about $399. The Pro 10.5" 256GB LTE is going for MYR4099 which is about $910.

Would it still be worth it to get the Air 2 at that price now? Or should I save up more and get the Pro 10.5" slightly later?

I'm not a pro user by any means, just casual usage like surfing the web and media consumption. The Pro 10.5" features isn't a must have to me but more like it's good to have and for the long run, it will be very future proof.

Any thoughts?

P/S: I'm not considering the 2017 iPad as I played around with it and felt the air gap of its display is much more apparent than my current iPad 3rd Generation. Not sure if it's my eyes playing tricks on me.

For your stated use case, I'd opt for the Air 2, and save a huge chunk of money!

I have the Air 2 and it has been the best iPad I've owned...and I've owned every iteration ( well except the 2017 )

The Air 2 has all the features ( of course, sans pencil related ) that iOS 11 has to offer ( running the beta right now) and it's smooth as butter for the most part.

I will probably buy it a discount later this year or next. The iPads are too expensive now to upgrade as often as I used to

Guess iPad Air 2 is the more sensible choice, hopefully it'll be a drastic improvement over the iPad 3rd Gen that I currently have.

That's fair. But I think the 10.5 iPad is fairly compelling hardware over the Air 2. When you factor the new brighter 120 HZ Promotion display, wider color gamut, quad speakers and Tru-Tone, it offers quite a bit in terms of internal power with the A10X Processor and Apple Pencil Support. In a couple of months, I see you being more tempted, maybe even sooner.

There is *nothing* wrong with my iPad Air 2, if I move to pro it's because i feel i am a nerdy geek and i just want the latest greatest toy. And yes, it will help me iwth my workflow etc, but it's not the end of the world to be on the air 2.
It will last me another few years, no rush. I'd love to, but i can't justify it.

I'm getting the new Pro (10.5) to replace my Air 2 for :

- Brighter screen
- Additional RAM ( which I do infact require )
- More storage (256)

And, most importantly,

- Ability to use a pen ( Really need this feature now ) for notes.

I will be replacing my Air 2 and MacBook Pro tommorow with the new 12.9inch model. Since December 2014 I've used my iPad Air 2 and it to this day has 9-10 hour battery life and performs admirably. The only time I notice its age is in the game Hidden Folks, where it's probably running 15-20fps on the larger stages simply due to the literally thousands of animated objects that are being displayed at once. The one other thing is while doing Splitview depending on the application one will tend to stutter while the other gets the majority of the processing power. With the new iPad Pro I will have more than enough power for my use of annotating large PDFs, creating presentations, writing papers, browsing the web, and playing my one game. :)

The new iPad Pro compels me for mainly the Pencil, evrything else is really background that in my mind that I'm appreciative of simply because my experience is going to be more refined then it's ever been.

New Features
* Pencil
* Smart Keyboard
* 12.9 display (Full Splitview)
Refinements
* ProMotion Display with Truetone, P3 Wide Color, 600nits
* A10X
* 4gb Ram
* 12 core gpu
* improved Wifi
* 4 speakers
* iPhone 7 camera
* USB 3 support
* longer battery life

aww :p Will have to play with it (the ipad 10.9) when it comes to Apple stores here in Australia :p

Actually I just looked at it at the airport (in Heathrow). I have an Air 2 which is the same weight as the 9.7 pro. Due to the new form factor the 10.5 felt LIGHTER. I did hold it from the left hand on both sides on the side of the iPad. It could be because of the weight distribution but it felt great.

You've got me tempted on the Pro again. Comfort in handling the device is pretty important.

Just got my 10.5 delivered. The display on this is stunning and moving through apps and scrolling is ridiculously smooth. I'm a little shocked just how much larger the display feels. Slimming down the bezels makes a massive difference and it doesn't feel noticeably heavier than my current Air 2.

I did try a 9.7" Pro last year but didn't feel like it was worth upgrading, but this one is definitely does. It's dramatically faster as well despite my Air 2 never really feeling slow.

I am not sure why anyone would rush to buy it now? Also why would anyone want to replace a laptop/macbook with the new Ipad now???
In my view the biggest selling point is iOS 11 BUT it's at least 3 months away.
By the time iOS 11 is out i'm sure the 10.5" will be cheaper or went through a lot of different discounts at various shops...
I might buy it in fall if I can get it 100-150$ cheaper.

I certainly would if I had an Air 2. The new Pro 10.5 is a huge upgrade, but it really just depends how much you value an iPad and what you use it for.

I do understand that it's a huge upgrade from Air 2. But what can you do woth it NOW that you can't with the Air 2?
Again, iOS 11 is 50-60% of the "upgrade" and it's not here.
I have an Air 2 and would have bought it now if it had at least Bluetooth 5.
After iOS 11 I might get it anyway with some discount...
