I have had my Air 2 since March 2015 and dont see a reason to upgrade yet.

I dont use the keyboard or need the pencil.

Air 2 still runs smooth and it has 86% of the battery capacity. Maybe next year.

I do understand that it's a huge upgrade from Air 2. But what can you do woth it NOW that you can't with the Air 2?
Again, iOS 11 is 50-60% of the "upgrade" and it's not here.
I have an Air 2 and would have bought it now if it had at least Bluetooth 5.
After iOS 11 I might get it anyway with some discount...
Wifi-only models frequently go on discount. If you're after a specific configuration (e.g. 512GB LTE Space Gray) from an authorized retailer, discounts can be harder to come by.

The new models are already discounted by at least $100 with 2-year contract. However, it's not worth the termination fee. I'd rather opt for the no-strings installment plan. Just pay off the device in full if/when I want to cancel service.

Well, I've just played with the Pro 10.5 and I've come away happy with my Air 2. My Air's display looks washed out, cold and framed by bezels, and its animations now feel a little slow, but I'm not blown away by the new Pros.

One day I'll feel rich and just go for it but, for now, my Air 2 now feels like old reliable and it's quite a nice feeling.

I am not sure why anyone would rush to buy it now? Also why would anyone want to replace a laptop/macbook with the new Ipad now???
In my view the biggest selling point is iOS 11 BUT it's at least 3 months away.
By the time iOS 11 is out i'm sure the 10.5" will be cheaper or went through a lot of different discounts at various shops...
I might buy it in fall if I can get it 100-150$ cheaper.

In Australia, end of financial year is 30 June making the timing of these updates perfect. Not a tech reason but still...

some websites for some reason stutter and lag on my Air 2. One example is weather.com when trying to see hourly forcast.
Can someone else give this a shot as well and see?

I wonder i the newer iPads experience this or not.

My thoughts exactly. I only really want the screen improvements and this is a hefty price to pay for that. Hopefully this technology will trickle down to the standard iPad in the future.

Apple has bifurcated the iPad line clearly: only PRO versions will receive the 'X' SOC and the Promotion display, as well as the smart connectors for keyboards.

Certainly the regular iPad will improve but my guess is 2yr cycles with previous years iPhone SOC.

Heh, I'm still rocking the Air 1, but will be pulling the trigger on either a 10.5 or 12.9 Pro this weekend. My kids are still using my old iPad Retina for their games.

Indeed time to move on. Your kids will enjoy having a second iPad (but they will still fight to see which one gets to use the "new" toy)

I am a current owner of a Air 2 but also purchased a 10.5 iPad Pro yesterday. I will have the device through the return period and then decide whether or not to keep it for good. While I can't do a full review because I need more time to go through the device, my first impressions were WOW. The first time you see the screen you will experience how wonderful it is. The Pro-motion technology for that refresh rate? It really makes a difference; scrolling is just buttery smooth and opening apps, doing multitasking, going between tabs, everything is just so snappy and fast. Its like my Air 2, which is still a great tablet, is now "slow" in comparison and I say that because remember how fast the Air 2 was when it was first released? Again, the Air 2 is still very capable, but unlike the Pro models of last year, these new ones really set a new level of performance.

Again, I need more time with it and will report back, but for the first impression, it has already gotten to the point where it will be hard to return to using my Air 2.

ignorance is bliss as an iPad air 2 owner here :p

Hopefully they would at least decide to use laminated displays for future refreshes of the non-Pro model.

I am going to wait for you other Air 2 users to post your thoughts after you have had the Pro for a couple of months.

Then I will make a decision.

I don't have much time to use it much yet, but for know I am pleased.
Just got my 10.5 delivered. The display on this is stunning and moving through apps and scrolling is ridiculously smooth. I'm a little shocked just how much larger the display feels. Slimming down the bezels makes a massive difference and it doesn't feel noticeably heavier than my current Air 2.

I did try a 9.7" Pro last year but didn't feel like it was worth upgrading, but this one is definitely does. It's dramatically faster as well despite my Air 2 never really feeling slow.
I totally agree with this. The larger screen is obvious in use.
On non symetrical split view, the small app has the same size as before, so all the size increase is for the larger app, and it feels now more comfortable in this configuration as the larger app feels less cramped.
Also, writing a comment here the keyboard take now less than half of the screen height. So again all vertical size increase is for the content and it does make a difference.
The improved refresh rate is obvious with animations.
And yes, it does not feel heavier.
I do understand that it's a huge upgrade from Air 2. But what can you do woth it NOW that you can't with the Air 2?
If you are not interested in the pencil or the keyboard, it does not do more. But what it does is better done, with more comfort.

Pre-ordered as soon as it was up and my put my launch day 64GB Air 2 up on eBay with a bunch of accessories the day after the keynote and didn't look back. The speed and display quality jump is awesome. Snagged a seemingly unused open-box Pencil for 12 bucks off too. Going to "force" myself to use it more than I did the Air 2. Got the 256GB since they pulled the middle tier "trick" again (eliminating the 128GB model instead of making it 128GB/256GB/512GB) Ah well...I needed more space for my photos and videos anyway. :D

I want the 10.5 but I just cant justify it. Even if I trade in my 16gb Air 2 im still looking at around $470. I dont need the pencil or keyboard.

Maybe if my Air 2 was slow I would but its really lasting.

I got my 10.5 yesterday and have been playing with it since tonight when the battery finally discharged.

I'm now using my air2 and the difference is real.

Is it necessary? Nope. But it's noticeabley better than my air2.

I am thinking about upgrading seeing as my iPad Air 2 is old. I have had it since launch. The battery is not holding a charge as well as it used to. Over all itit seem a bit sluggish. Not unsable just old. The pro is a much needed upgrade. The current "New iPad" isn't enough of an upgrade so I am going the 10.5" pro this year.

Air 2 user that upgraded to 12.9". Screen improvement is worth the investment alone. And the speed is just incredible; you can sense that this is OVER-powered for the current iOS by a wide margin. I expect this to be a long-life model.

I think it will be interesting to see how iOS 11 reacts with the iPad Air 2. If the Air 2 is affected with iOS 11 update, it might push uses to upgrade to the 10.5.

Indeed! All my iPads ended up as hand me down. Otherwise I would not be able to justify upgrading every other year.

Right now I will take a pass because my iPad Pro 9.7" is just one year old. But when I upgrade next year, one of the main justifications will be upgrading my wife's iPad Air with my iPad Pro.

The key to most technology upgrades... nice to have vs. must have. Without planned obsolescence, lots of folks would still be using XP desktops.

I think Apple does a great job supporting their products (5-7 years for MacOS, 4 years for iOS) with the latest software but it certainly speeds up the "end of life" for products that are still useful.

One example is an original iPad, with shoddy battery and iOS 5 (i guess) running Netflix on a connected TV (via HDMI cable) basically an Apple TV at this point but still useful.

No, Air 2 is still plenty fast and serves all my needs. Great upgrade for iPad 4 users and older though. Possibly Air 1 users too.

Debating it currently

One thing I'm thinnking is selling my Air 2 and MacBook Air and purchasing the 12.9 iPad Pro as a replacement, really liked the look of iOS 11 and think I could use it as a replacement for my MacBook no problems.

I might wait till iOS 11 is out and see how it works on the Air 2 before I decide to take the plunge with this though

I would be for this if apple had trackpad support on iPad. For me its just too cumbersome to have a keyboard and touchscreen at the same time.

But that would defeat the purpose in some respects using the display with a track pad. Also, implementing a track pad would likely make the attached keyboard much larger than it needs to be. I like using it as a Touch display and having the keyboard as a separate accessory when I need it.
