Does anyone know if the iPad Air 2020 supports external drives/flash drives like the Pro?
yes, Apple very briefly highlighted USB-C connectivity (see at 56:14 into the Sept keynote), mentioning up to 5Gbps connection to things like: "... cameras, drives, external monitors up to 4k..."

The 2020 Air does seem to be generating a lot more interest on these forums than its predecessor, and it’s worth remembering that the 3rd generation model received excellent reviews. I’m interested to know how many people are upgrading to this from a base model iPad or replacing an existing Air, as opposed to those looking at this instead of a Pro model? I get the impression that a lot of people may fall into the latter category.
I’d been planning to upgrade from my original 1st gen Air to the 11” Pro, and then the 4th gen Air was announced. Don’t care about the cameras/Lidar of the Pro, nor its 4 speakers vs only 2. However I want to occasionally use USB-C external storage (and yes I know USB-C transfer speed for Pro=10Gbps vs Air2020=5Gbps). Leaning towards the new Air but perhaps I’ll wait to see reviews for performance comparison

I don’t see why not, USB-C has way more functionality then just for charging, even when they were on Lightning, storage accessories were made specifically for lightning so USB-C should work with other accessories.

This whole Apple not talking about an Air 4 release date now has me wondering, do y’all remember when Mark Gurman tweeted last week that Apple Stores have begun receiving shipments to be opened at a later date which he said were not iPhone because it’s too early for them, if they are not iPads either cause they should be launched soon if they are, then what is in these mysterious shipments?

Thanks for the info. Would be a deal breaker for me if not. Would like it know for sure. Interestingly there is nothing specific on the tech info relating to this only 'USB-C for charging, connecting to external monitors and more'. Why not mention this. I know there is a power issue involved, so.........???

Yeah, it's really strange. Waiting sucks, but at this point we might as well assume that it's the 31st so that anything earlier is a pleasant surprise. I'm tired of thinking I've figured out when to expect it only to be disappointed when it's wrong.

Something I’ve learned from dealing with clients is to always, always underpromise and then overdeliver.

Apple should’ve just said “coming this fall” and then surprised us with an October release. This would also buy them additional time in the event that there are unforeseen delays.

Best Buy Canada have said iPad Air will be released next Friday so pre orders tomorrow would make sense. Only thing that’s so strange is the fact apple will have released this without any prior notice.

John Lewis also have Oct 23rd (but they didn't have all the colours listed for the cheapest or the most expensive option, they did for the others)

Looks like the Air has finally been approved to launch by FCC. Could Apple have been holding off to receive approval?

Maybe that could have been an issue, but it seems likely that they would have just launched the wifi versions and said that cellular would be available later.

Should I buy the iPad Air 4 or buy the old iPad Pro 11'' 1st gen? I think the iPad Pro 11'' has better screen, but the iPad Air has the new A14 chip, and a "gorgeous blue"
If you're comparing to 11" gen 1 then I would go for the new Air.

Now THAT is a much harder decision...the Air probably has a better chip than the a12x...and since there isn't any extra rear camera stuff and LIDAR scanner...I guess the only upside for the 1 gen Pro is slightly better screen with being brighter and 120Hz motion vs 60Hz and the TruDepth front camera system and quad speakers...but the 1 gen prices SHOULD be dramatically cheaper than the new Air.

UH-OH!!! I think you just unintentionally brought up what I've heard from many of my other colleagues who say: Apple just re-released the old iPad Pro and gave it cheaper parts but the new chip and spray painted it neat pastels. o_O??

 You seem to be mocking Apple's innovation by saying the tablet is based on a 2 year old device...Stop crushing my worldview ? (jk of course)

That is true but Apple did say available October and probably wanted to have both models be available for purchase at the same time. Who knows but what I do care about is should I bother to wake up at 5 AM tomorrow!? Lol

That is the question. I wake up around 6 anyway. Even if pre-orders do start at 5, I don't think it will sell out that fast, especially since most people won't even know that it's gone on sale!

Thanks for ur replies! Where can I find the iPad Pro 11'' 64 GB 1st gen? I'm looking in Best Buy and Amazon, but I didn't found anything:(, Do you think I can find an iPad Pro 11'' 1st gen that isn't refurbished?

Probably not available anywhere by now that would be "new"...so refurb is the only option for the 2018 model.

15Oct20: I am going to go with a bingo on this one. amazon just added the iPad Air (4th Gen) to its listing with "currently unavailable". Look at the footnotes Past footnote 6:
