I never quite understood this myself, with all kinds of external sources for storage access available. Why the desire to make one's iPad an isolated database system holding all your data given streaming, wifi, and cellular technologies available is beyond me.

I go a lot of places where there is no WiFi or cellular - nonexistent or incredibly low bandwidth and stability. And iOS is incredibly poor with exFAT storage, which I need to use.

I don't really get it either. I don't remember the last time I looked at my usage stats for any of my Apple stuff. I live in a really good 5G/5GUW coverage area though, and LTE was always really fast around my area too, at least on Verizon. That being the case, I mostly rely on cloud sync to optimize my storage and rarely spend the money on storage I don't need unless I'm splurging a little bit.

Because streaming, wifi and cellular can often be too slow or unavailable.

While I don't understand why this has to be an either/or choice. Regardless, cellular technology is only applicable if you're paying the $$ to get a cellular model and willing to pay for an extra line on a device that's suboptimal for phone use, unless you mean tethering an iPad to a phone.

I have GB Internet and strong 5G (700+ Mbps) at home but I often go for long periods of time to places where either nothing is available or is so poor as to be unreliable for much use. I plan for those times.

OK, I am going to let my true "noob" colors show here (please go easy on me ;)), but why is 64 GB and even 256 GB too low for most "non-average consumers".

With cloud storage for photos and music, with streaming services and now that iPad can have external storage options, what am I *NOT* storing on my iPad that I should (or, at least, what others are)?

For some of the posts I read I wonder why all the consternation.
This is a perfectly valid question. In my opinion, even 32 GB is fine, I find it very hard to believe that a ton of folks are installing dozens upon dozens of apps or store massive video files or downloading massive files onto their iPads.

If you've ever had an Android phone and put in a massive SD card in there, depending on how you use that device, you'll learn real quick that you might not ever use that full amount of storage. I legit think it's folks who think everyone who buys a tablet is going to load it up with their movie collection or something, if I had to guess.

Edit: That said, I do get that some folks can't stream or depend on data/coverage.

This is a 1.5 year update, people.

My 8th gen budget iPad is fast enough. Hell, my mom’s 5th gen is plenty fast.

64GB base storage? Stupid. 256GB for $150 more? Complete money grab.

This thing offers nothing worthwhile. Center Stage? It’s a gimmick.

I watched the presentation. As each minute passed, I thought there was something special coming. Nope.

For those who are going to buy this, you’re getting screwed.
If you’re saying your moms 5th gen is plenty fast then you have very low standards. My mom used her 5th gen for pretty basic browsing and social media and was definitely getting sluggish and even crashing before we got her the 9th gen. That alone kills off the validity of this post for me

Wow, you paid that much for something that old…they saw you coming.

It‘s the refurb store. Can’t trade anything in. Gonna sell my 8th gen for probably somewhere between $250 - $275.

Also, got my pro in less than 24 hours after ordering. I love it.

Mom isn’t having any problems with her 5th gen. Just installed iPadOS 15. No issues. So your mileage may vary.

The Pro does have some nice advantages - particularly the display. I do believe the speakers are nicer as well.

Older models of the Pro are a bit of a toss-up though, they'll not be able to compete with the M1 processor in the new Air.
Thats what I don’t understand, one buys the IPad Pro’s for their performance, so why would anyone want to buy a iPad Pro that has less performance than the Mini 6, let alone considerably less than an M1 Air. It can’t be just for the pro motion and speakers, surely not?

Perhaps mainly as a media consumption / web browsing device? I think the older processors still hold their own for simple use cases for now.

I'm mostly ambivalent about the topic - choice is good. Prices are getting higher compared to the past - but I feel that's more a problem with inflation than anything, exacerbated by the pandemic and of course the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.....

Respectfully, this post is complete garbage. Don’t make people feel bad or insult their intelligence because they choose to buy a product. Firstly, if your 8th generation iPad is fast enough and you don’t need the features then don’t buy this tablet. People buy iPads for all different reasons. Many will be upgrading from the original 10.5 design. Many will now have the choice to get this over the Pro. It’s a very compelling purchase if you don’t care as much about ProMotion and you wanted to choose a colour. The features offered here are MORE than enough to fill the needs of most people and in my opinion the Blue looks a lot nicer than the 11 Pro. Also, most people that buy this tablet won’t be upgrading from the previous iPad Air unless they’re Apple enthusiasts. Like back in the days of 2015 when Apple used to upgrade the MacBook Pro with a new processor and added the Force Touch trackpad - this isn’t meant to be a huge upgrade to take over your most recent device. That’s why it got such little airtime at the event.

The one thing I do agree with you on is 64gb. They really should have gone to 128. In saying that, I have Apple One and most of the my files are on the cloud so it doesn’t really bother me.

There's also FaceID, storage (at lower price points) and display size.

I know folks who bought an iPad Pro solely because of the 12.9" display.

I don’t believe my post is garbage. However, I should have used a healthy dose of IMO.
