When I saw the commercial air, I wad wondering if Steve Jobs was in attendance; he looks well.

the commercial was great. for those of you that think there's a camera announcement coming, check out the middle of the top bezel at 4 sec.

Whoa! Nice catch! I've been way in the camp of wishing, but not expecting, a camera to show up. This just keeps that wish going, possibly to my own detriment...

Looks like he is getting his evil look back. Way to go Steve.

Maybe his friend can share him some hair... :D

I notice the NYT blurb in the ad had a empty square box... Is that a missing plug-in for a FLASH image? Or unlike everything else on that section, it didn't have time to load?

Cool ad, tho... Wonder what AAPL stock will be tomorrow? Up, as in Pixar film or Upper as in to infinity and beyond!...

It really will have to take the place of a computer because other tablets will.

But the iPad is not a tablet. Tablets have been around since the early 90s, and have a pretty well-defined feature set, and a small but loyal customer base (mostly in light industry and manufacturing) with slight consumer breakthrough. Apart from the lack of a keyboard, the iPad has none of the features of a tablet, and Apple has said they don't intend to compete in that space with this product. Jobs went into great detail on this at the event, and with press afterward.

Nobody knows whether the iPad will be successful. But declaring that it's no good because it fails to do two things it's expressly not intended to do is kind of silly.

There are a couple of different postures used in the commercial. Stretched leg, crossed leg etc. but all in the reclining position. That seems to be an intentional message by Apple, iPad is more for entertainment, relaxation, fun and games. I am sure we will see more use cases/postures including sitting straight and walking and standing up to illustrate the mobility aspects of it but the first shot is at the fun and entertainment part of our daily digital lives.

...now, after big fish company ate small fish company and left me to be a part of government employment statistics; saddly it is the iPad that really makes me want to beat the odds and find work again. Round three of interviews tomorrow... talk about inspired - offer letter = wife approves iPad order!
:D

Good Luck!

I have been one of those statistics as well for the past 3 months.
Just got an offer letter last week!

(Will also be parlaying that into a mac and iPad, after I buy the missess a new sofa and chair - of course);)

Still doesn't make me want one. Still makes me think it's pretty worthless.

I'm not sold on it either. While it offers a bigger screen than a Touch, it offers no new functionality. Several obvious features it might have had were left out. Perhaps a later version will be more appealing. We'll have to see what apps come down the pike, but, for now, I'll take a laptop over an iPad.

MacBook Cannibalization

The "serious computing" part is the operative factor here.

I can think of (a) programming (although, I'm sure you can make an app that can do this, and combined with the keyboard, there should be no issue. You probably wont be compiling stuff) (b) printing (although I think wireless printing is possible, but not sure if there is any "printing" app) (c) graphic/physics-intensive gaming (d) Professional multimedia editing.

There are only a few things I would need the iPad to do in addition to what is advertised today to replace my MacBook, a little html editing, a little photo editing, some ftp, wireless printing and maybe a few more little things. I suspect all of those are going to be new little apps that some app writers will put together very soon.

So, with a little time it WILL replace my MacBook for me.

Meh... Can't say I'm particularly impressed. It's standard fare as far as Apple ad's go. Not bad, but not any sort of ad that will stand out (think: iPod silhouettes and "there's an app for that"). Which leads me to my next point: where does the iPad stand from a marketing position? From this ad, it looks as if Apple was trying to meld the iPhone/iPod touch demonstration/walkthrough style advertisement with iPod commercial-like music. Unfortunately, it's not well executed and feels a bit awkward. I understand that Apple wants brand coherence, but I'm not sure they're doing the best job with it in the iPad's case.

In the end, it's a mediocre ad. Nothing bad, but it's no breakthrough in marketing.

I like it... What I noticed as much as the ipad, was the peoples' legs.
Ok get your mind outta the gutter....What I mean was that you could tell the people using the ipad were in relaxed poses... Ie. Feet up on the sofa/ottoman, legs crossed laying in bed or what ever.

More important they are not sitting at some freaking desk.
The relaxed poses and the upbeat music = iPad computing experience = fun.

So I thought the Ad was effective.
(or maybe I'm just buying into the hype.... Now where is my wallet? Hmmmm...)

No new functionality?!?

What are you kidding me?

I haven't seen Pages, or Keynote, or Numbers on the touch/iPhone. Sure there are some apps for office type programs for the touch but have fun with using those on a 3 INCH screen.

There is new functionality.
And the screen size is exactly what will invite and drive more.

The ipad takes what is good with the iPod touch/iPhone touch interface ( and there is a helluva lot), and opens up sooo many possibilities by giving you a larger canvas while still being portable.

I don't know every app that will be available for the iPad on release, but I'll assume you know what you're talking about. Regardless, none of the apps you mentioned would be 'fun' using any touch-screen device, regardless of screen size. I'll take a laptop, thanks.

The ipad may be the final stroke in America's obesity problem. The product will work so well no one will need to leave the couch. ;)

Not true, we will still have to get up to get more potato chips.

Wait a minute, I'm not gonna get my new ipad screen all
gunked up with chip grease.....

That's it the ipad may spur weightloss through decreased consumption of junk food!!!!!

Totally agree. This is like telling an artist he can do the same work on a post-it that he can on a piece of construction paper. The Screen size alone is a humongous feature.
