Well, other tablets suck/ed. But what you are proposing is that the iPad succeed and yet suck too, thereby allowing all four niches to exist (with the notebook niche remaining unaltered).

No, ultimately, the iPad will canibailize Macbooks a bit, but still be useful for more serious computing.

The "serious computing" part is the operative factor here.

To a large majority of people, "serious computing" is

a) Listening to music.
b) Watching movies.
c) Facebook.
d) Skype
e) AIM
f) Mail
g) Looking up restaurants, news, etc. on the internet

and thats about it....

Excepting the flash issue (because its been mentioned ad nauseam), what other use case (especially mobile) is not available on the iPad?

I can think of (a) programming (although, I'm sure you can make an app that can do this, and combined with the keyboard, there should be no issue. You probably wont be compiling stuff) (b) printing (although I think wireless printing is possible, but not sure if there is any "printing" app) (c) graphic/physics-intensive gaming (d) Professional multimedia editing

And I think its a very small subset of people who care so much about these things that they would not buy an ipad at all, because it lacks these abilities.

Finally, I think Apple's product strategy might actually be
Desktop (doubles as a TV, especially if their all you can watch, subscription TV thing goes through) + iPad + iPhone.

I think the Macbook will be eliminated, leaving the Macbook Pro for people who need to do the above, but in general most people will go with the Desktop+iPad+iPhone combo...

Sedimentary? Hahahaha :) Sometime I feel like sediment. Usually after a night of drinking. I'm thinking maybe your spellchecker did a number on you.

You'd have to be sedentary for a long time to become sedimentary. ;)

LOL Thank you both, you got me. Sorry for the incorrect usage.

Edit: I found another new excuse to buy one. I will fix a rig to my treadmill for the ipad to fight of the couch potato syndrome :)

No, he, as perhaps you fail to see that the product will be so good that it will take on some of the multimedia tasks now done by MacBooks; more than what can now be done with the iPad with its current limitations.

Well I don't need one because I already have many devices that do the same things that the iPad does, but if that commercial is real time the speed of this thing is going to make a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro look slow.

Apple won't be selling normal notebooks anymore if that speed is real. Everything is instant on it. No delay at all.

The ipad may be the final stroke in America's obesity problem. The product will work so well no one will need to leave the couch. ;)

Perhaps making the iPad so light was a mistake - they could have advertised it as encouraging exercise, weight training. In fact that could have also led to it being desirable to buy two!

Loved the sedimentary/sedentary stuff above :).

Well after viewing that commercial a couple of times this thing is so fast going from one thing to the next who would buy a MacBook or iMac anymore? I have a 2.4 Ghz Core2Duo in my iMac and although they have faster models now I think the iPad would have my iMac for lunch speed wise.

Maybe it has to do with running a better lightweight OS then having more processing power, but honestly this thing is going to replace notebook computers if that speed holds up when more complex things are loaded on it.

If Steve is successful with putting 20 lbs on his frame hopefully People will stop projecting their biggest fear about him on the rest of us.

He actually has gained some weight since his successful surgery. He looks much better.

ZING! that was awesome!

jobs looks EXTREMELY well for someone who's pancreas is largely gone with a new liver. glad to see that he's having a good time.

the commercial was great. for those of you that think there's a camera announcement coming, check out the middle of the top bezel at 4 sec.

Nice ad and nice timing. My inner fanboy is screaming with excitement. This should tell be enough to show people the iPad is not just a large iPhone.
Agree with this. People who look at what iPad is capable of, and who say it's an over-sized iPod touch, are simply failing to use their imagination. The screen real-estate is enough to set it apart. Sure, I'll have an iPhone in my pocket, but my briefcase will have my iPad in it much more often than my MPB. Just a guess.

Not sure how that equates to exercise. All of those uses are sedimentary.

Are they? Merely being outside is healthy for those who have lived their lives indoors. The ability to take your entertainment with you and enjoy the outdoors.

someone loves star trek!

We ALL love Star Trek... We are geeks, remember? :D

btw... I think the ad itself is no big deal. Yesterday I watched the iPad event again and that DOES make me want one. This time it's when and where they showed it that matters.

Yeeesh.
For everyone expecting some last minute feature additions from the lackluster keynote, prepare for the disappointment.

I haven't seen an ad this boring since the one for the first Touch.

Please Apple, just announce the iPad 2 and let us wait for that one.

Hey look, an article about the iPad ad has devolved into an argument about whether people are or are not getting an iPad.

Didn't see that coming.

No one confuses it with a large iPhone.
The iPhone at least has a camera.

It is confused with a bigger version of the Touch and this ad did nothing to change that view.

Did I miss some extended version?
Was there something shown in there that wasn't in the keynote?

...It is confused with a bigger version of the Touch and this ad did nothing to change that view...
This is one of those cases in which size matters. iPad can do things iPhones and iPod touches can't by virtue of the screen real estate. And by that I mean: do them better. Photos - better. Email - better. Browsing - better. Videos - better. Calendar - better. Size matters. Better.

sincerely i dont think the speed on the commercial is real
to me it looks a little sped up to keep a good flow
if that is the real speed it would be pretty amazing!

we ll see in few weeks
