Steeeeve . . lookin' dapper !

I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. Yes I'm an Apple loyalist and I know I'm gonna get knocked for this but, that Vaio P is just straight sexy. I'm two seconds from getting one, but I am still wondering what the ipad is going to be like hands on. Heeeeelp ! Anyone, suggestions please, I'm literally a day away from just going and picking up the Vaio but don't wanna kick myself when the ipad is released. Someone please give some valid pros / cons as to why I should or shouldn't get either.

I don't know every app that will be available for the iPad on release, but I'll assume you know what you're talking about. Regardless, none of the apps you mentioned would be 'fun' using any touch-screen device, regardless of screen size. I'll take a laptop, thanks.

Yes the iWork apps were totally redone for the iPad and its touch interface.
Although, IMO it really depends on how much text entry you are actually doing.
Light typing would be fine.
Hardcore keypunching?....,
..well I would agree with you and would want a full keyboard.

I'm lying on my back in bed right now,
just surfing the web before bed on my iPhone.
... I wish the screen was a little bigger but wouldn't want to whip out a laptop.
The iPad would be perfect.

Looks great!! I can't wait to get one!

And seriously debbie downers, go cure cancer or something instead of whining about how you won't be getting an iPad because it doesn't have XYZ that you think it should have.

It's ironic that if you actually wanted to watch the Oscars on the iPad, you couldn't. You'd just get a blue lego block.

Ah yes. Any thread with any mention of the word "iPad" or "iPhone" legally requires someone to bitch about Flash. I believe it's the 404th Amendment.

Seriously? why not just get a 13 inch MB or MBP? A regular desktop OS on that small of a screen just seems like the biggest fault of it. And the keyboard? I guess I don't get it.

From http://blogs.zdnet.com/computers/?p=316

Then came the actual tests. How’s this for a list of “cons” for a netbook that starts at $900 from PC Magazine’s review:

Underpowered. Bloated with software. Three-cell battery yields only 2 hours of battery life. Needs another price adjustment.

Admittedly that review was from a while ago, but I still say that the screen size is just beyond pointless. The battery life at best is a claimed 7.5 hours with the extended battery that is an extra. Also, more expensive to start than the top end of the iPad pricing.

The iPad, for all its limitations, has a longer battery life, a bigger and more usable screen, and in all likelihood better performance for its applications. Multitasking is not exactly something I expect to be doing with either device.

There Is A Camera!

On the commercial, seconds 3-5 (when the book case flips) there is a camera at the top. Awesome! :D

Also, I didn't notice it on the youtube video, but the video at apples site is much higher quality.

haha i see it too. when they're showing off the ibooks app, transitioning from the photos app

Agree

Completely agree with people who see the camera there. There is definitely some kind of dot right in the middle of the screen. Perhaps this is the "surprise" for the first people to get an iPad that Apple mentioned.

Its probably the light sensor that changes the brightness automatically.

It was interesting to see the positions Apple expects users to assume when they use the device. Most involved either a folded leg or lap. Not bad positions for short periods....

Regarding the iWork apps, don't tell the Courier fans that word processors can't be fun because that is all Courier seems to do (at least from the leaked demo videos Microsoft keeps putting out so they can appear to be relevant).

Thats what the dock or case flap are for. I agree that is is unfortunate that such a device requires you purchase more things but it isn't like this thing is intended to replace computers completely right now (who knows in the future...although I doubt computers will ever be fully replaced by tablet like devices until things like the OS updates or app development don't require a completely different device running a different OS).

What is holding the iPad in place when you type with both hands in this posture? It looks to me it will slide down and it will be uncomfortable to type. This scene makes only a fleeting appearance in the commercial.

I think you're right.

I have to say, the iPad might be perfect for my 61 year old parents. They love their Touches, but I think they'd really love this thing. They might not even need to find their glasses before they use it.

Check the bezel on seconds 3-5 when the book case flips. Is that a camera?

No. That does no look like a lens. (looking at video on Apple's site, large version).

Also, notice how when there are close up to the upper bezel (5-6 secs ) you can't see. Also when the actor moves from portrait to landscape where is the thumb? Right on this spot (mid point).

Also just before 5 secs show fully rendered NYTimes site... errr, where is the flash blue boxes. Like this ad isn't photoshopped to death... like all other ads.

P.S. If look at the iPad specs you will see that there is an ambient light sensor. That is hardly a camera.

It is a commercial. It is extremely likely that those legs and feet/shoes don't belong to the hands model they brought in to do the typing. Neither is the video capture on the screen done from that angle (think about it this is shot from the perspective of where the head should be. Where is that person's head? that wide of angle shot with that deep of perspective? ) It all special effects, photoshopping, and tweaking..... just like 99% of the other commercials on TV.

P.S. Likely the typical Apple super glossy screen and not a specular highlight or shadow anywhere in the whole commercial. How "naturally" shot is that?

Feel free to be an arrogant jerk, or explain what you mean.

Here let me try.... You have no clue what you're talking about. All you're doing is talking out of your fourth point of contact (look it up if you don't know what I mean) when you say it will need to take the place of a computer. No it doesn't need to.... IMHO the people who will buy this are the people that already have a computer and want something easier to use while on a plane or train ride to check mail, surf the net, and maybe watch a movie or two while they go from one place to the other. What would you rather pull out.... a clunky laptop that has a battery life of maybe a movie if you're lucky or a sleek iPad? You want to talk arrogance? Just look within my friend.

Good or Bad, the iPad will be functional for me

I'm a road warrior who only needs to be online to email, surf, skype, read, and watch video. I began leaving my 15" MBP at home 2 1/2 years ago when the iPhone was new. My iPhone is great for many things, but I must admit it does get tedious to read newspapers and books, and watch video on it. This is where the iPad will fill the void for me. More books, more video, and even a few more games too. Heck, I could care less about the 3G connection because the iPad will be used in conjuction with wi-fi all of the time. When I do get that random need to be on the internet while outside a wi-fi hotspot, the iPhone will still fill its mission.

I do not want the iPad to be everything that a netbook might be, I just need a tad larger screen without the weight of a 13" Macbook. The iPad is going to be that perfect in between the iPhone and Macbook device which I personally have a desire for. Now I can envision making paper books and magazines a thing of the past. Two or three magazines, and one or two books will now be left out of my bag and replaced with one iPad. Still a weight savings in my opinion. The thought of putting law school texts on iPad in a couple years also will be a useful thing too.

The only downside about the iPad is I am once again concerned about protecting iPad from the dropping and the airport security routine. Hmmm.

As for the lack of a cam, not a big deal. I love skype over iPhone, and iPad will be a good extension of this app. If and when iPad gets a cam, then I'll just upgrade in couple of years. I learned many years ago not to try and make my Apple products outlive 3-4 years. I usually have increased memory and speed requirements that force my upgrades, which is cool with me.

As for the TV commercial, gotta get that Apple PR/Hype machine in full gear.
