cpatrick08, I got the exact same configuration you did except I went with Silver instead of Space Gray. Also, I got it from Best Buy and not the Apple Store. I am prepared to wait for it, but I really hope it gets here earlier than the 21st. I am dying to get my hands on the 2021 iPP.

I was trying to add Apple Care+ to my current order and couldn't, but they let me know the 12.9 iPad could ship this upcoming week, but no later than the 19th-20th.
I need to do the same. the checkout process was super buggy and I was just trying to get my order in.
I believe once you have the device in hand you can get Apple care right from the device. Correct me if I am wrong..

I have never used Apple Care+ myself, since every Apple device that I’ve owned has been trouble free.

I didn’t order it for my original order that I placed on April 30, but after reading so many comments about the new mini LED technology, am thinking of adding it in this case.

I hesitate to add it to my original order, since I don’t want to cause a delay in the order, which is late enough already.

I know it can be added in the early days right after a product is received, and that’s probably the route that I’ll take.

One thing that I was wondering about was whether it’s cheaper to buy the Apple Care+ as part of the original order, or does the price stay the same even when buying it “post purchase”?

Technically same price unless the seller is offering discounts (e.g. Apple EDU store). In my location though, I have to pay sales if I get it at the same time as the device but not if I sign up for it later.

In could mean that's when they'll ship from China. They also said delivery depends on the courier. So it could be delivered before the 21st.
Hmm ok, seems we’re at the mercy of international shipping then.. the best case scenario sounds like a ship date of 5/14, arrival on 5/20 or 5/21

Don't know where you are at, but I've had an iPhone leave China on Thursday, go to Anchorage, then Louisville, then back to LA and be able to pick it up at UPS CC at 8am Friday.

I pre-ordered the space gray, 12.9", 2TB version from Best Buy a couple of days ago. It's saying that it should ship on 5/24.

After suffering a one hour delay with ordering on my iPad then getting a late June delivery, I ordered the same config as you - except 1TB from BB. I had to be put on a list to notify when I could order and was able to place the order on Monday. Then on Wed, I get a notice that the iPad would be “released” on 5/21 after initially not projecting when it might ship.
I do not understand how BB could do this so far in advance of Apple and, of course, the term “released” is being debated in this thread.

I think Best Buy only has so many allocated to them to start with. I couldn't get the 1TB version so I opted for the 2TB version which was available. I believe the first allotment directly from Apple has already been sold out hence the reason shipping dates are slipping.

Let me try again as I forget BB now says 5/21 is my 'release' date. How can I order the same configuration (1TB) at 5:50 am Pacific on 4/30 then have to wait to pre-order from BB until Monday yet Apple says June 9 -23 and BB says 5/21?

I could be wrong but I believe the first allotment from Apple's online store sold out faster.

Likely because more people were preordering from Apple rather than other retailers. They're not working off the same pot.

Apple likely told Best Buy "You're getting x million of the 2021 iPad Pro and this is the breakdown."

Chances are on release date, the Apple brick and mortar stores will have their own stock, too. It's also entirely possible that Best Buy didn't make their entire launch allocation available for pre-orders and are reserving some stock for their physical stores, as well.

For Apple Store online preorders, Apple has their own initial allocations and breakdown and those ran out more quickly. These could be easier to fill for Apple (versus wholesale orders of millions of devices) as they can just ship products directly from factories to individual customers as quickly as they can manufacture them (or fill up a cargo plane).

I have never had a problem walking into a Best Buy store and purchasing an Apple product on launch day. However, this time around I went straight through Apple, as I had an Apple Card and the chip shortage had me nervous. Still on track for a May 21 date; the Apple support rep I spoke with earlier said that is their "conservative" estimate, and it could come earlier, however they do not want to over promise so this allows them some padding and a delivery window they feel comfortable with. So who knows when it will come, but every day we get a little bit closer.

I doubt Apple will deliver earlier than the first batch date. I don't recall them every doing this. Not once. The rep you talked to is misinformed. Apple is conservative with dates, but only for the outside allotments.

They'll ship from China earlier for big wholesale orders to retailers. Maybe the first wave of Apple Store preorders will already be in the US already sitting in a warehouse, too. However, they'll hold them for delivery until the official release date. Seriously, we've sometimes had UPS deliver devices close to midnight during Apple product launches.

Oops. Meant to say deliver, not ship.

There is an Apple warehouse less then 10 miles from my place. Hope it’s just sitting there now and not shipping from China. I’d imagine I’d get mine next day.

if Best Buy is shipping on 5/24, then apple stores should get them the week of 5/17 and have them ready to release 5/21.

my best guess for first batch of preorders is shipping from China directly to those who got their orders in, arriving in USA week of 5/17 and arriving on 5/21.

I don't know what the situation with COVID is like right now but before, I've had preorders ship from China (by plane) and get to my door within 24 hours.

Best Buy is shipping them on 05/21 not 05/24.
