Did anyone see this article? Apologies it's a bit old, but it's nice to know how they propose to spend taxpayers money! :D

Taxpayers could be forced to foot a £30,000 bill after a Town Hall earmarked some of its 'climate change' budget to buy iPads.

Cambridge City Council has pledged to spend the cash on 42 of Apple's latest gadget to help get rid of some of the thousands of pages of paper printed in meetings each year.

The £250,000 climate change budget was approved by the council in March last year to reduce the carbon footprint of internal projects.

But with the iPad retailing between £499.99 and £699.99 for the 64GB even councillors themselves are calling the plans excessive.

Matthew Sinclair, Research Director at the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: 'It is understandable that the council want to avoid wasting paper, but it is incredible that they think that means providing councillors with flash new Apple iPads at a cost of thousands.

I am thinking that the fact apple says they will release " all models" late April in the uk is the real issue here

so either there is an issue with the 3g model itself ( kind of makes sense as the USA have no 3g date either)

or there is a delay in apple setting up data plans with partners, possibly in all countries

I am willing to bet that they could release the wifi version here now. Just they said they would release both together.

Thoughts?

But Apple always said that they didn't expect to get international network deals done until the summer - and they always said the wi-fi only would be released simultaneously with the 3G. So the release of the 3G shouldn't be dependant on deals being done.

:( I am so fed up of waiting...

What gets me is that I can't understand why Apple can't just announce what the prices will be.

They can announce availability dates later, or coming soon, but the UK (and EU) prices must be locked in by now, surely.

What a crazy way to launch a product.

I agree - it's completely ridiculous. They all know we know it's coming, why they can't just give details and allow everyone to pre-order is beyond me...

On a lighter note, I called the Apple Store earlier on after hearing that people were able to 'press 2 for the magical and revolutionary iPad' and when I did, got through to this awesome guy who took my details and promised to call as soon as it was announced.

Didn't think they did things like that!

Cheers,

KG

You can get Bundlebox to get you one for around £410 with taxes paid which to me seems a little better - that's if I've figured how they work properly - i.e that VAT etc, paid for ahead.

At the current exchange rate, the base model plus taxes would come in at about 405. That's not including shipping and bb's profit. So I can't see that 410 including taxes.

A quick question for anyone who has their iPad and has been using Pages:

For someone like me with PCs instead of Macs, is there an easy way to write documents in Pages and get them onto a PC in a format that Word can open?

I got the same offer a couple of weeks ago. Same apple man forwarded me all the reviews when they were first out and gas been in email contact ever since.

Probably means nothing :)

export to word and e-mail it.

Wow everyone is going to ebay - will there be any buyers left at launch!??

I'll be buying mine from Apple here in the UK, no matter what. For all the obvious reasons, and because for me there's no fun in ordering one on ebay - not the way there is compared to the normal way anyway.

Plus, I'm 95% sure I want 3G.

.

really? We seem to be having a lot of fun in this thread. Easily as much fun as queuing up with a few random strangers in a shopping centre.

I have a MIFI from 3.. Which I've unlocked so I can put any SIM I like in it. I use that. This way when I'm on WIFI no problem, but when I'm out, doesn't matter which country I'm in, I just buy a local pay as you go SIM and off I go. It also means I can share the connection with my laptop and iphone.

As long as we get news of a definite date by the end of April, yeah. If not it's ebay or bundlebox for me.

So you are going to wait until you find out if it is going to come to UK before the end of April? If it doesn't you'll have to wait until it arrives from the US? If you were to order today....
