Just a quick note to all you guys talking about having the item shipped as 'gift' or 'repair' that by law, technically, you are committing an offense requesting, or even knowing that an item is sent so as to deliberately mislead customs. What's more is that they will charge you whether it's marked as a gift or not if they consider it to be new and high value. It's dodgy ground.

That's tosh! UK Sales of goods act state that a warranty has to be honoured by the manufacturer (up to 6 years if it's found to be a manufacturing fault.) They cannot demand to see a receipt.

That might be true, but if the item has been imported before it is intended for sale in the UK, then Apple can tell you to go take a long walk off a short jetty. They wouldn't have any obligation to uphold a US warranty in the UK (in otherwords, they would invoke the "discretionary" gobbledegook quoted a few pages back).

My offer in post #2756 is still available, and includes an Apple cash receipt :apple:

Not much time left though :D Flying out on Sunday.

USPS takes longer to clear than FedEx? Really? What do you mean by stung to death :(

I was thinking of going with the ~$80 insured delivery that quotes 2-3 days as a delivery time!

I'm having a friend post it over from texas, wrapped up in wrapping paper and described as a gift.

Is that gonna get stuck on USPS?

Well USPS use Parcelforce to deliver in the UK....so you'll go through standard customs channels with likely delays, followed by a letter in the post asking you to pay the customs fees or if you have enough info you can go to your local depot and pay in cash...

YMMV of course...$80 with Fedex got it to me in under 36 hours!

Once it's been released in the UK then there will be no issue. But until then you have two choices...

1. Ship it back to the US and then back to Apple for repair

2. Wait until the UK start selling them and head to local Apple store.

Once they are selling in the UK it doesn't matter where you bought it from, for all the Apple store person knows you could be a US person visiting the UK and the iPad has broken.

How would they know though? Unless they are producing different batches of hardware for UK market as the US.

Did that provide any insurance in case they lost the parcel?

If so I'll go with FedEx.

They will know by the serial number and the moment a "genius" plugs it into their system for repair, they will be able to tell you when you last took a dump. Not really, but you get the idea ;)

I was told by my friend at the Genius Bar that they have been told the warranty is like the iPhone and IS country of purchase specific if the machine breaks and needs to be repaired.

I am so undecided at the moment about where to buy?

You 100% safe bet is to get it in the UK.

My other worry with the 3G in the UK is that if the rumours are true, then the release was delayed because of pressure from the UK carriers upon Apple to release the 3G and WiFi iPads simultaneously.

Now, if there are subsidies available in return for signing contracts, it worries me that the non-subsidised price could be inflated even higher so that the subsidised prices appear even better
No way i'm getting a contract as I am moving abroad in the summer.

Nail on head.

However, no subsidies. iPad will be retail price but with bolt on type data plans.

yup they will only subsidies if they can lock you into a 12 month contract, which Apple have already said you won't have to do. So unless that changes too...

Heh, getting a little bit worried about this Warranty business. I think it would be quite unreasonable that someone at the Apple store wouldnt have your ipad repaired or replaced if 'it was bought in the US for me, and they brought it as a gift for my birthday'. That would be pretty mean of them.

Another issue could be that many 'global' companies are subdivided into continental or regional divisions, almost like mini-companies. I don't know how Apple operates though. But, if you imagine that any repair of a US iPad that is undertaken counts as a loss in profits, then Apple UK won't be happy about taking a loss on behalf of Apple US, if that makes sense. Apple UK gain nothing from it, they haven't sold the item as such.

My order from yesterday has just been cancelled :(

Looks like the bundlebox idea is no longer being allowed. Rubbish!

We have had it from everyone from customers who have bought from Apple in the SU in the past, to Apple Store employees, to American corporate lawyers, that the wording of the warranty technically means we are covered here in the UK.

But an *sshole genius like the one you know could always throw a spanner in the works - solution? Book another appointment I guess!

I was one of the people who orderd yesterday using a UK card on Apple store, and weird development. Just checked my Order status and They have changed my billing address.

It now says austin TX, and the zip code has changed too, i put 00000 and its now a number starting with 7. Quite weird. They seem to have also removed the last line of my address and Post code that I squeezed in there.

I hope this is a sign that it is working, we will see though...

They did exactly that with mine and now it's been cancelled as they won't ship to PO boxes etc like Bundlebox now

Damn.. I seen quite a few bundle box ones going through recently. I heard some get through and some don't and sometimes retrying helps.

If mine gets cancelled I might just use the personal shopper option on the 22nd.. I really do not like idea of paying £460 though.

What did you use for your billing address? BB?

That happened to me as well! However, the payment has been taken so who knows. I think if they see a BB address as a billing address they don't like it.

Let us know if they keep your order alive!

I used my UK address as billing address but put 0000 in the zip code bit. As the poster above, when you login, theyve changed that to TX
