You should use an address in a state where there is zero sales tax such as Delaware, Oregon etc. No sales tax = more money to spend!

Are you sure that sales tax applies to iTunes sales?

I've bought several items on my US account and the price is the price. Nothing is added for sales tax even though I have registered with a California address.

Maybe the taxes is factored into the prices you see?

I honestly don't think so. They appear to be the standardised figures usually ending in .99 etc. Apart from which it is customary in the States to quote prices net of Sales Tax and to add it as a separate item at the point of sale.

Certainly my receipts don't show any itemisation.

This is because California is one of the places that does not pay tax in the APP store.

Alot of states DO pay tax.

Congratulations to Cyberheater for getting a package seemingly through Customs without getting checked. Congrats also to MacRy - I think your charges have already been issued - call ParcelForce directly to check as the letter can take a while.

As for me, my iPad is currently in a 'STORE' (whatever that is :()

The customs form might have been filled in wrong and they might want an invoice from you, or just payment. You tried ringing Parcelforce?

If that's correct about California having tax-free internet sales I obviously struck lucky then, entirely by chance! :)

The only problem with that, is that I've got normal prices as well in Kentucky, when they have a tax of 5.5% or 6%.

Now that's cute. I'm still changing my address :)

Just looked it up again, Kentucky is actually one of the ones who DO charge tax on Itunes goods. you will probably find you have been charged more then your thinking or it was added on.

Hmm, I haven't bought anything yet, but I will check and readdress to delaware or something.

It's a legitimate gift and so I have no invoice although I could get one if needed. I'm 'happy' to pay the customs charges.

I just wish they wouldn't mess about. I know the package has my mobile phone number emblazoned on the front of it. Why would they not pick up the phone to discuss the item rather than send a letter or just 'store' it? :(

*cries*

'Gifts' still get customs charged. Any gift worth more then around £40 is liable for customs charges. Also they would have to have wrote the exact contents value. If they lied they might confiscate it.

Also they only accept a gift as a gift if it is for a birthday or anniversary (e.g Christmas) , so you would have to proove it is your Birthday soon if you are going to say that.

2.4 Gifts

Goods sent as a gift that are over £40 in value are liable to import VAT. Customs duty also becomes payable if the value of the goods is over £135 but is waived if the amount of duty calculated is less than £9.

To qualify as a gift:

* the customs declaration must be completed correctly
* the gift must be sent from a private person outside the EU to a private person(s) in this country
* there is no commercial or trade element and the gift has not been paid for either directly or indirectly
* the gift is of an occasional nature only, for example, for a birthday or anniversary

Note: if you purchase goods from outside the EU to give as a gift to a relative or friend, whether or not addressed to that person, is treated as a ‘commercial consignment’ for which the import VAT relief threshold is £18 (paragraph 2.3 refers)

Thanks. I don't think I'm out of the woods just yet though.

Looks like yours will be arriving early next week. I'm looking forward to the virtual 'show and tell' next week with yourself and MacRy.

Thanks for the update. That's interesting and I hope that Customs isn't so petty as to confiscate the item (according to the rules you posted, they shouldn't be able to - but then again, they're a law unto themselves, aren't they?).

I hope it gets released, with charges or not - I would quite like to have this in my hands next week!

Yeah I hope so for all of us. Good luck to you (I think yours will arrive first). I plan to call ParcelForce to chase on Monday and if an amount is due I'll pay it over the phone if I can.

I really hope Customs aren't going to unbox/open my iPad. That would be really annoying. They won't find any invoice in there and I was really hoping to open it myself (that's all part of the fun, isn't it?).

Thanks for the encouraging words chaps. I hope that it is a simple matter of just contacting Parcelforce for the charges too. I dropped them an email earlier but I'll ring them first thing Monday too to find out what is going on. You had better believe there is going to be some virtual show and tell when it finally arrives and I hope to Jebus that it isn't faulty in any way after all of this as my track record with Apple hardware is pretty bad.

I cracked after holding out so far. I've ordered a 32Gb 3G iPad from http://intlo.com/en/shop-ipad. I'd appreciate any new reports from purchasers from this site. I called them and had a long chat with 'Tim' before placing my order. There are some odd charges included (which is how I presume they make their money) and the total I'm paying is £747 which includes 48 hour shipping with Fedex.

They claim they will be shipping on the 1st of May (as Apple have notified them that their 3G shipment will not be delivered before 5pm on 30th April).

Anyone else ordered from intlo.com?

There was a discussion about this company in this thread about 9 or 10 days ago and a few people were on the verge of placing orders until they were put off by the very high shipping charge which was added at the very last minute.

I was also concerned about additional charges for unnecessary or meaningless compulsory 'options'.

Another thing to consider is this. How are they able to promise shipping of the 3G on 1st of May when the Apple Store is saying shipping on the 7th?

Slick looking website though.

Because if you orderd from Apple a few weeks ago you will get it on the 30th April. Because Apple stores and Best Buy will be selling them on 30th April.

Fair enough if they have access to those early supplies, but this company is by no means a cheap option, to say the least.

Yeah, and personally I feel once it hits May there is no point what so ever in importing. You might as well wait by that point.

Just for the record, the postage charge came to £100.63.
