You wont get a PAYG where it sits there till you use the data up unfortunately. They have all cottoned on to that now and want to make more money out of us. Voda used to do that where you topped up £15 for 1GB and it lasted till it was used up. If you were lucky enough to get one and still have it (like me) then it still applies.

Yus, really wish I had one of those. But as you say, they want to squeeze us for every penny so, I'm s.o.o.l. :(

God I've gone full circle with this 3G v Wifi thing. If we can get a decent PAYG data plan I'll be all over the 3G, but I'm feeling more and more disheartened by the whole lack of news, it doesn't bode well to me - maybe the Wifi is the way to go after all... I just don't want to be disappointed by the decision I make, I want the ability to have access wherever I go.

I haven't got an iPhone so this route is not really an option, although I am due an upgrade soon, hmmm.

It's possible to turn Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, (some) Simbian and perhaps even other phone types into a mobile hotspot. Right now, the iPad doesn't allow connection via Bluetooth which is what all these use by default, but there are Apps available for each platform which do the same as MyWi. :)

It's been said before but maybe worth saying again.. The iPad cannot teather to the iPhone unless the iPhone has been jail broken!!!!

In fact Steve Jobs said that it was not possible at a press conference he did. Not sure if that will ever change. I'm guessing not as most iPhones have this unlimited data model. The iPad being a bigger device is more useful on the network and thus more data would be used causing the phone companies issues.

I was planning to unlock my 3 mifi and use a t-mobile sim, as they have a £2 per day payg tarrif. Basically, if you know your going somewhere with no wifi access, you can top up your sim just
for the day.

I know the general consensus is that we won't know the UK pricing until the 10th but I do feel it's a bit poor that the iPad is meant to launch in the UK at the end of this month and we still don't know pricing. It's like, and I know some folks will be shocked by this, that Apple only cares about the US market and doesn't give a stuff about the Euro zones. Maybe I'm being controversial.

That's not a bad option. I asked in a T Mobile shop and was told they didn't do PAYG on data. She obviously didn't know what she was talking about.

So, I've noticed there is some discussion regarding the debate between iPad WiFi and WiFi+3G. Well, for what it's worth, I decided against the 3G because of the ability of tethering to my iPhone. This is achievable through the MyWi jailbreak application which costs $9.99. With that one-time expense, I can enjoy a lifetime of free 3G internet on my iPad. I made a video to demonstrate how easy it is to use;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKw3tK7H0vQ

Let me know if you want any more information about it. I've been using for a few days with no hitches. First video as well by the way so please don't be harsh! :p

Problem with that is it absolutely rapes the iPhone battery. 10 mins use will use around 15% battery sometimes! I hope someone releases a bluetooth-tether hack for the iPad!

This is great thanks, nice vid. Do you have to install RYP crap? I did that on my 3G and was well buggy. Waiting for Sprint for my 3Gs hoping can handle it better.

Is the MiWi only for one phone ie if exchange do you loose it or it linked by RYP account?

Ta

Yep, but a mophie juice pack still cheaper than 3G and get to use it when not tethering....

There are 2 reason's why the data tariff's have not yet been announced:

1. Apple doesn't want us to know yet
2. The networks don't want each other to know yet

The first one is probably the most prominent reason as to why the details have not been announced. In the same way that they (the networks) were only "allowed" to make their individual announcements the same day Apple said they were delaying the launch of the iPad itself.

The second one will be the what we're officially told. There will be some sense in it for competition reasons, although I could pretty much guarantee that there will be very little difference between the offers of each network, and even if there are the gaps between them will be closed very quickly.

I would like to see a system similar to how they have it over in the US where the data bundle can be managed directly through the device, although having been an employee of one of the networks here, I can imagine that to be unlikely. Purely because all the networks use slightly different systems - as an example, not all the networks over here have Visual Voicemail for the iPhone despite offering the iPhone itself.

From experience I would say that the data tariffs are likely to be a $1 = £1 conversion rate from the US versions. Ie, £15 for 250Mb, and £30 for Unlimited. On a separate note I could never understand why you had to pay extra to tether an iPhone with a PC!! Apparently it was because the iPhone uses more data, although in my head 100Mb is 100Mb no matter if it's from an iPhone, a Nokia, a Samsung, LG, or a Google Nexus One. But still, I digress...

One other thing that is worth considering, as we have more than 1 network offering the iPad itself it is possible that we will see subsidised pricing for the product along with a contract period of ownership. Personally I would not bother with this as we know Apple works to annual product cycles, I only concede to it with the iPhone as I have no choice.

For the short amount of time every week I would use the iPad on 3g in my current situation, it would take me an age to use up 1GB

Solution.

Purchase a Vodafone PAYG 1GB SIM card from eBay (they're about £10). That will give you 1G that doesn't expire.

Cut the card to fit and insert into your 3G iPad and voila, you now have data on the go - as long as you're careful about usage.

I didn't have to install anything other than MyWi, although you do get a login for Cydia so it can be downloaded in the future --- presumably can be downloaded to another phone as well. I haven't encountered any bugs in using it for the past few days.

It definitely causes the iPhone to operate hotter than usual but i don't think there is a hugely adverse affect on battery life. I've been browsing this evening for two hours and my iPhone battery is still 3/4 full. Considering the iPhone battery isn't the best to start with, I don't think that's too bad.

Bluetooth will be an option soon hopefully whenever there is an iPad jailbreak available (which I will definitely do, as this device has so much potential). The only reason built in tethering doesn't work is because Apple have blocked the iPad connecting to the iPhone via Bluetooth.

I'm looking to sell my 32gb wifi model. Its mint condition and been in a case since I got it. No issues at all. Reason I'm selling is I want the 3G model. I would like to get $500 for it and will ship anywhere. I have all the original packaging and will include a free dock. PM me if interested.

Thanks

I'm curious as to why people want an unlocked MiFi though?

I carry O2, Three, T-Mobile and Vodafone cards for my unlocked MiFi.

O2 came with a dongle - I don't use it. I don't use the Three SIM either that came with the MiFi.

T-Mobile do £2/day, £4/three days, £7/week access and Vodafone do 1GB/£15 no expiry (but you can get these SIMs pre-loaded on eBay for £10).

You can't do any of those offers with a stock MiFi that is locked to three.

As for £10/1GB on Three - you know that the 1GB expires after 30 days? That means you will be spending around £120/year on a rather limited MiFi data tariff.

I've been searching the vodafone website and was not able to find this at any price. All the PAYG SIMs expire after 30days and then need topping up again. Can you provide the link on their website?

I guess not so many of you are that interested anymore regarding the non-delivery of iPAD, however I am still no better off now than I was a week ago.

17-04-2010 22:55 Delivery Agent - CHICAGO Left origin country
17-04-2010 22:54 Delivery Agent - CHICAGO Arrived at Outward OE
15-04-2010 11:40 Delivery Agent - UNITED STATES AMERICA

This is what is on my screen on the PF website and much the same on the USPS site. Do I take it that this parcel is lost? Looks like many of you who had stuff sent from Chicago have now received or will be receiving their iPADs shortly, I sadly am not one of the lucky ones :(

Any suggestions? More patience?

I would suggest calling them and asking about how you go about putting in a claim for lost items!! That usually spurs them into some sort of action, or speak to a manager.. Either way lost for this long is not good!

I know how you feel.. my ipad only took a week to arrive but boy did it feel like a year!

Hi Zed, thanks for your response. I contacted the seller on Friday last week who told me that USPS can take up to 30 days to investigate the whereabouts of a package. (Not much help as I could have bought one in the UK before that time expires!) Anyway as I bought from Ebay, I have logged an issue with the purchase of the item and apparently the resolution may be quicker that way. I feel for the sender, but I also feel a bit down about the whole thing. Bloomin' volcanoes!

Yeah. I'd be putting in a lost item claim right about now. Contact the seller and get him to chase it up. It's up to him to ensure that the package gets to you.

Hi, thanks for your response. I did find that contacting the ParcelForce head office useful (01908 687000). The phone got picked up instantly and the lady told me that the batch that my parcel was in was missing from the PF system, indicating that it has not been sent from the US. (Joy!) Is anyone else still waiting for news?
