It’s kind of amazing how people can talk themselves into something like this being “OK”

Apple charges top prices and in fact increased the prices this time around….
How anyone defends them cheaping out on components or implementation is beyond me

We have no idea what is causing it, it could just be software. And I did a number of different tests and I have zero jelly. So it's not happenign for everyone. It could be different display manufacturers, with just one being affected. And even then, a software fix for those could be all that is needed.

Anything is possible.
That said, if it’s not fixed or fixable, it’s not ok, would you agree?

I have to say, a software fix seems unlikely if it’s not impacting everybody equally. I certainly hope they don’t have a big batch of bum screens from a certain manufacturer.

...because personal preferences are just that.... personal.

For some, the jelly scroll effect is a deal-breaker. For me, lack of a headphone jack and increased $100 price, and a few other deficiencies are a deal-breaker for me. Those are non-issues for everyone else.
I had to splurge on a USB-C adapter and AirPods. It would have been nice to have MagSafe charging while the headphones are plugged in. I sometimes like using my Sennheiser HD 600.

The fact that it isn't all units certainly seems to indicate that it is hardware-related. If that's the case, don't expect Apple to acknowledge it other than, "a few customers have reported" type of thing.

Personally, I'm not seeing an issue....

I'd have to think any 60Hz display would look the same - and any 60Hz display would scroll more jaggy compared to, say, a 120Hz display.

By all means, feel free to -gate it up.

Well that doesn’t square with the people reporting they’re not seeing this on any of their other 60hz Apple devices

I have just come off of a live chat with Apple regarding the ‘Jelly Scrolling’
Apple simply suggested initiating a return for refund, or they will issue a replacement once UPS have scanned the return on my doorstep. Though the replacement could be a week to arrive.

They have also suggested to visit an Apple store and have it replaced there and then, providing it is within the 14 day return period.

None of my iPads ever exhibited a jelly scroll. Not even my Mini 5. Granted, the sample size is only 2-3 dozen ipads so I won't say that no one else has experienced it... only that jelly scrolling is not a function of a 60Hz display.

I wouldn't like it if I saw it. And I can see it in the video in this thread, but not on my device. So it's not my eyes :)

I’m really curious what the technical explanation is, assuming it’s not just a missing vsync in software. We’ll probably never know though.

Seems Apple quality assurance and control has been slipping over the past number of years. Remember the iOS DST bug and the laundry list of other software and hardware issues over the years.

Certainly. But I’m curious what’s actually going on on the technical level here.

Well it’s Apple’s design philosophy that their keep going back to the drawing board to rethink and make things better, while that is all dandy I guess it does not apply to released software and hardware 😝

While I can see it if I go looking for it by scrolling up and down really fast, at the speed I tend to scroll web pages in portrait (somewhat slowly), it doesn’t really occur, so I’m not going to make a big deal of it. I’ve got no plans to return mine.

Just sharing my own experience with this issues. I have the graphite 64GB cellular model. After spending many minutes trying to find the problem, I’m not able to see it in landscape of portrait mode.

After REALLY looking for it I'm able to maybe slightly see it. Is this what everyone is complaining about? Or is your guys significantly worse than this? It really doesn't seem like a dealbreaker at all to me. I'd encourage everyone to take videos of their own so we can compare

Try scrolling at normal speed as you normally would when scrolling on macrumors

If I flick scroll through the macrumors site it’s slightly there but I don’t flick scroll on many sites. While reading a pdf book I have to scroll fast to observe the issue, once again I don’t read or scroll through books that fast.

I make stuff for a living. With covid messing up production, they may have had to substitute a known part they couldn’t get from a known supplier. And the new part is either not hitting spec or hitting a different spec. I do seem to recall Mini was going to come out this spring and got delayed.

I was thinking maybe I’ll just exchange it at the local store. Apparently, the 12 nearest Apple stores near me have none is stock. Wonderful.

Another thing is that they might have seen it and crunched some numbers that it would cost too much to destroy all the units, therefore they'd let it ship and have the customer return the ones that are lemons. They probably planned it this way to save money.
