This were exactly the conditions I was doing these tests, dark room, max brightness.

I mean my eyes perceive slight blooming even from my OLED screen on the iPhone in those conditions. I know it’s technically not from the screen itself but that’s what happens with our eyes when we get blinded like that.

In a dark room I need the brightness near or at minimum so I would never see it in actual use.

Wow come on here and get a lot of Negative Waves :(. Mine just arrived and was setup, have had with Magic Keyboard for all of 60 minutes or so. Coming from a 2020 11”, favorably impressed. Picture outside of HDR side by side is much better on the 12.9, enjoying the real-estate, and obviously this system is quick. My wife gets my 11, so will see in the coming weeks how the 12.9 performs - use mainly as a primary device and love the touch computer interaction of my 11”…this is 12.9“ with a better screen and processor is better - as expected. It’s apple, won’t know more until new software (IF) comes out with iOS 15. Either way, I’m good.
I know it — always with the negative waves! These people need to chill out and dig the beautiful screen ?

Had mine since this afternoon...

CONS:

I can for sure get the blooming on bright lines on a black background when in the dark with the brightness up. It's kind of a niche situation I won't have in real world use, but I'm not necessarily thrilled about it either. I also have the shadowing at the edges and that's basically a non issue for me it's so minor. Also, I am not really getting the feeling of there being a bigger screen gap with the apple pencil like some have reported. If it is a thing it's something I would have never noticed and I use my iPad primarily for illustration so if it was a real issue I would have sussed it out immediately.

One other bummer for the time being is that Procreate hasn't pushed an update optimized for the ram so the layer/canvas size limitations remain an issue but they've stated they'll be addressing that when they get a chance to put these iPads through their paces, so hopefully soon.

PROS:

HDR video looks insanely good and the screen is bright as hell which will be awesome for use in brighter rooms or outdoors. Just tried out center stage and it's honestly way way cooler than I expected and works flawlessly and butter smooth. This thing is insanely fast. It ran a subdivision on a model in Nomad sculpt from 2.3 million to 9.3 million faces in .75 seconds. That's crazy. Also obviously coming from a 2017 to a 2021 I am just blown away at how small and compact this thing is. It feels so futuristic.

Anyway, in the long run, the spec bump is such a leap ahead of my 2017 and 16 gigs of RAM was the primary driver of buying this so I'll be keeping mine despite some of the display backlighting issues. I do look forward to potentially OLED in the future and whenever we get micro LED I am very on board with that. This thing should last me a while and the only thing that would get me to jump on a new one would be a major improvement to the backlighting.

Shame you can't get the 10.9 Air with Microled-screen. iPad Pro is too expensive for an iPad - despite being a tech powerhouse in many ways. I mainly want a great media consumption device.

Loving the screen and extra real estate of course, but coming from a decade of various smaller iPads besides the 12.9, the weight and ergonomics, especially when it comes to typing with thumbs like I’m used to, is proving to be a challenge. I can’t believe they ditched the split keyboard.

I also can’t believe my wife got a 13" M1 MacBook Air with 16gb and 1tb for less $ than my M1 1tb Pro.

Question for all that have come from an 11” iPad, to the 12.9.
Does out physically seem much bigger & heavier?

Honestly unless I’m really looking for it I don’t see blooming, I’m busy enjoying this gorgeous screen to look for blooming.

full brightness ? I never use my iPad at full brightness, lucky if it goes over 40%

If it bothers you that much, return it, or don‘t go looking for blooming and enjoy that marvellous display.

Again, I’ve always been more sensitive to it. Once you can see it, you can‘t UN-see it. It’s not that I am looking for the blooming, but it’s present.

Another thing that I am also sensitive to is something that is best described as backlight lag. Going from a bright (or not even a bright scene, just a lit scene) to a dark scene, there’s a brief moment where the LED has to shut off/dim that is noticeable to me. The LED is trying to catch up to what is happening on screen essentially.

I really like the specular highlights I’m seeing with the screen, though! HDR in general and color reproduction are phenomenal as well.

Got my iPad Pro 12.9" 265 GB WiFi model on launch day in Mumbai, India.

The Apple website was not delivering to my pin-code due to covid lock down restrictions, so I preordered on a reseller's website. I was skeptical about getting it on day 1, considering the shortages and delay globally and even Apple India website showing delivery dates of July for other cities.

To my surprise I got a call from the reseller (Unicorn) saying my device is ready to be hand delivered on launch day and they sent a guy at my home with credit card swipe machine also..!!

I am loving the new size and the black backgrounds while watching movies look spectacular.

I'm quite happy with this one.

Still awaiting reviews of how much the white keyboard holds up against dust and discolouring and then will make a decision to purchase.

My iPad is great, especially the screen. It seems however that older apps no longer in the store won’t transfer over to M1 chip, probably because of incompatibility. For many years I have setup my new iPads from a backup through iTunes/Finder and everything, even apps not in the store always transferred. With this iPad, I lost two apps that won’t install and state the app is no longer available in the store Keep/Delete. It’s got to be the M1 compatibility. Oh well.

I noticed that the magnets for this year’s iPad Pros are a tad stronger than last year’s model. As I was attaching the new iPad Pro to my Smart Keyboard Folio that I bought for the 2020 model of the iPad Pro, the attachment was slightly stronger than before. Anyone else noticed that as well? I could be mistaken.

The M1 iPad Pro is one impressive beast, smashes the MacBook Pro in a lot of tasks, apparently it was throttling during the Geekbench test, someone should tell him to update the software to 14.5.1 ?‍♂️

For such a thin device, knocks it out of the park for performance.

Curious to know what makes you certain software will fix this. Have you seen software fix this sort of thing in the past.
I hope you’re right, but I’m just curious about the basis of your statement.
My LG OLED TV had a bad blooming effect when they were first launched 2 years ago. It was really bad when you watched credits and it had the black background and white text it looked like auras around the text. LG released an update and it fixed the issue almost totally. Someone on the LG reddit that was pretty versed in that type of thing said (I think) it had something to do with the power management of the pixels etc.

Plus its Apple, I doubt with all the testing they did and professional screen they gave it, they gave us all screen that have a ton of bloom on it. (Of course they could say we are viewing it wrong lol)

For me I am semi concerned about it because I take a ton of pictures of the stars, moon and Space X rocket launches so I would see it all the time and possibly have me color correct wrong.

Do you think your images are more accurate on the new screen than previous iPads?

I totally get that. In my everyday use, it’s really not going to affect me, and for the most part I won’t have the iPad on at full brightness either. The pros of this thing absolutely outweigh the cons. I’m coming from a 1st gen iPad Air, so this is an incredible jump!

All I’m trying to determine is: are some iPads experiencing this issue more than others. If so, I’d want my unit to be at the higher standard the others are at. If all these iPads experience it to the same degree, then I’ll realize that‘s just how it is, which is totally fine by me.

Honestly you got nothing to worry about, all these iPads are the same, this is how mini led works.

I see the shadows on the borders but it doesn’t bother me, even with my OCD for sure. It’s uniform. I don’t really see the booming that people mentioned. I still like the screen, the colors are fantastic side by side compared to my 2020,

hell even the speed is noticeable from the 2020 unit. Keeping it for sure.

For those who say you haven’t noticed the blooming. In my case, I only notice it because I’m using Apple’s solid black wallpaper for my lock and home screens. With the brightness up, but especially at peak brightness, it’s easily noticeable around the time and battery percentage text. I imagine if I had a different wallpaper with variation in color or patter,, I wouldn’t notice it at all.

Also, I think I see shadows around the edges of my screen, it’s honestly not even noticeable enough to plainly say, yeah, it’s there. For me, blooming is the bigger issue, but only in certain circumstances.

that was my main reason for choosing the black keyboard over the white one. discoloring sucks

Playing around with sidecar in macOS, which works so well, just reinvigorates my desire to use more capable software with the iPad.

Apple includes the ability to run iOS software on a Mac now (if it’s an ARM Mac), even though there are compromises with UI and even if it doesn’t work especially well all the time.

Given their willingness to compromise there; is there a snowballs chance in hell that the solution to iPad OS issues would be to simply allow ARM native Mac Apps to run on the iPad? With the understanding that they’d need to be used with the Apple Pencil or a keyboard and mouse most of the time? Why couldn’t Apple, at that point, build-in finder-level file control and other features WHEN using Mac apps on an iPad?

Shot in the dark, I know. But I think it would be a genuinely workable solution. Right now, even if iPad OS gets some upgrades, it’s up to other developers to build software that actually takes advantage of this beast. And this software already exists, and could run on iPad OS IF iPad OS itself was updated to be compatible with Mac Apps; given they now run on the same CPU architecture.
