One of the reviews criticizes Apple for not supporting the Youtube codec (VP9?) that would allow 4K in apps/device, however the defunct ProTube app (for iOS) was able to display videos in 4K... that doesn't make any sense.

Note: The Youtube app for iOS can only display up to 1080p. Similar apps can't go further, too.

I didn’t realise this until I saw that same video.
Kinda sucks tbh. Strange that they won’t allow it? I thought it may be a screen limitation, but turns out it’s the codec thing.

Sounds silly, but it’s made me second guess my purchase a bit. I watch a lot of 4K content, so worry I would end up disappointed in this.

How is this a codec thing if I was able to switch to 4K (or at least 1440p) in the 2016 iPAD Pro 9.7 model (using ProTube)? Could it be this was a fake 4K? Somehow I doubt.

Perhaps he is complaining about Apple when the criticism should be directed to Google, which often creates s.hitty apps just like Apple does with the hardware from the iPADs, plagued with so many limitations. Google doesn't allow users to listen to videos in background mode for the free Youtube app, for example.

Note: 4K content works in all video players. *

* For all devices, especially those using at least iOS 11, which optimized playback and made it possible to save (to the camera roll) smaller videos with the same quality (thanks to H.265/HEVC).

Has anyone tried 4K files through VLC? Most apps are only going to support the codecs provided by iOS, as those are the codecs supported in silicon. VLC is the only app I can think of that provides software decoders (which will use more battery).

I don’t know anything about it other than what the review guy said.
I have just Googled it and it would seem that it’s possible through using Chrome. So that’s something I wouldn’t mind doing.

Of course, the finger would be pointed at Google on an  forum, but as I say I don’t know enough about the intricacies to know where the fault lies. Either way it sucks majorly.

So do we have an idea whether the 4GB versus the 6GB causes a huge performance difference?
I Think not that much, while doing any normal day to day task,
Here are something the 6Gigs can do
1. More apps in the background.
2. faster Loading of heaving files in apps like adobe Photo shop.

Rest Ofcourse 6 Gigs would have been really good for future proofing but its still Ios Architecure, 4 Gigs is enough

Figured.

Ordered the 12.9 in 256 and as much as I want the 6GB of RAM I don’t want to spend that much on the 1TB as it’s not my main computer.

Wow The Verge scored it a 7.5 with the cons including price and iOS limitations. I do think Nilay was a bit harsh regarding USB limitations. This is the first iOS device to support USB-C. Apple switched for a reason. I will not be surprised if within the next 6 months some of these limitations no longer exist.
Unfortunately you can't review something based on how good it might be in 6 months.

This means, almost every single iPad app will now need to be updated to the new aspect ratio, and we all know this will result in so many apps neglected and will result in massive black bars for so many apps.

Unfortunately you can't review something based on how good it might be in 6 months.

Wasn't that the case with the 10.5 and iOS 11?

Hás anyone mentioned how much time does it take to charge from 0 or 1% to 100, with the charger that comes with the box and if there’s any way to do that faster with another USB-C adapter that is more powerful, sold separately?

YES, nailed it right there. The potential is incredible. I think once we get USB-C into our iPhone's and Tablets and remove the iOS limitations - it will be to a more refined level on what Microsoft tried to do with their Windows Mobile phones and that will just be the one device for everyone.

These guys are now concentrating more of their efforts in the quality of their video, edits, camera angles, etc... versus actually reviewing the product. But hey, that's what gets hits and subscribers. I mean look at Dom Espisito's "review" of the iPhone XR. that was just pure laziness and garbage, but his camera quality was nice.

I’m with you on this one. A popular YouTuber was reviewing the XS and one of the shots was an unopened iPhone resting on a flight of stairs, outside at some public place. The camera captured the YouTuber walking up the flight of stairs to pick it up, cause you know, that’s what a person does before they review it. Yeah, like that happens everyday. It was so random. Too much glamor and not enough substance.

Which is fair. To me, I think the iPad more or less starts at $950 because I'm not sure a lot of Pro users would be happy with just 64GB.
No. It is not fair. It doesn’t start at $950, and I agree with Marzel. From the title of the review to the content, and that final statment that has no sense and it is so clear he does not like Apple too much. He highlighs the worse parts. Its funny to read the The Verge’s titles about Apple products. Always with some implicit criticism.

I don't usually like The Verge's reviews of Apple products in general but I do think they did a nice job with the iPad Pro review. It simply is fact that when you start paying laptop prices you expect more than just a bigger iPad for watching YouTube and browsing the web, you expect real work functionality. iOS is the kryptonite of the iPad Pro and it HAS to be discussed alongside praising the incredible hardware. I think Apple knows all this and there has to be a plan to fix it but it just hasn't happened yet. Based on rumor iOS 12 was supposed to be a massive update with new UI and features but was turned into a bug fix and clean up year by Apple after many problems in iOS 11. I think iOS 13 is likely to bring major updates to iPad including a whole new home screen and app selection interaction as well as full file support for external hard drives connected by USB-C. Hopefully multitasking also gets better.

Biggest issues I see with my use case is mostly in Excel ... Spreadsheets that are forever long having to manipulate many cells quickly, really needs a mouse. I even look at my wife, she could use iPad for many things, but she is a Project Manager who relies on Microsoft Project, even if they had a version for iPad, the multiple cells she needs to click and manipulate are too numerous. I think you need better multitasking and a mouse and it could truly replace a laptop, but for now I need to bring my laptop with me most places when I travel, except for short trips.

I still absolutely love my iPad though and it is my goto for everything else!

Yup. This is exactly the one thing that would able to me to ditch my laptop instead of traveling with both.

Excel on iPad is cumbersome and needs a input device.

iOS 11 was announced at the event that the iPad Pro 10.5” was announced. We knew exactly what we were getting and had beta software installed immediately. Completely different. iOS 13 is purely conjecture at this point.

I will never take an Apple product review from Nilay Patel seriously. There are plenty of other writers/reviewers at The Verge that I think do perfectly acceptable reviews, but Nilay just really doesn't like Apple, and if you're going to have your biggest Apple hater review most of their new products, then I don't think you're going to produce a fair-handed review. I always think back to his original Apple Watch review where he dinged the Milanese Loop band because it "looks stupid" and was literally wearing one of those metal studded leather cuffs that metal heads wear while filming the review.
But any sensible person understands that that’s his personal opinion. You can judge for yourself if you like the way something looks and ignore those comments if your style isn’t similar to his. I personally love Nilays reviews, not as much as Dieter’s but he’s still one of the better reviewers out there. He’s critical of Apple where it matters and that’s how reviewers should be. I think your point of him being some apple hater is pretty extreme. Reviewers have the responsibility to be critical. That’s what pushes change and development. If everyone just threw around 10s the industry would largely go stagnent with minimal innovation. Reviewers being critical where it needs to be is part of the reason we’re where we’re at with the iPad. If every reviewer and customer out there were completely satisfied with the original iPad to the point every review and customer review was a 10 what incentive would there have been to work towards what the iPad is today. My last point is that I’m pretty sure nilay is an iPhone user so calling him some apple hater is just dumb.

I like to see reviews that are true reviews in normal use of the equipment ... safari open, several tabs ... liked to see the split screen with 2 applications, more in the 11 ", but at the moment the reviews are unboxings and show the equipment, but that already we all know how it is.

do a practical review of the equipment, show a movie on netflix, a video on youtube in split with the safari, several tabs open ... numbers + safari side by side, the rest already know everything from the 30

We should get a couple “regular joes” reviews tomorrow from NZ and Australia.
But also in the late morning on Wednesday for America East Coast buyers.
I don’t really care about the reviews, as they won’t affect my keeping my iPad, but it’s nice to hear positive things nonetheless.

Kallum.

I agree that it's both right and useful that reviewers point out short comings, but I also think Nilay Patel's review was a bit unbalanced, emphasising the negative over the positive. He talks about performance being good but all of that is couched in terms of 'roadblocks' and 'limited featured sets'. How about actually giving us some real, quantitative information about performance rather skipping on to downsides quite so quickly? Compare that with Laptop Mag's review, which although perhaps a little unbalanced the other way, at least offers a couple meaningful speed comparisons, video transcoding and RAW file conversions (both of which are very impressive!)

I think that boils down more to a difference in review philosophy of each outlet rather than the reviewer. The Verge never talk about benchmarks and numbers in their review. They focus more on what typically matters to the day to day consumer and that is the devices perceivable performance and day to day usage doing tasks. More so an eye test rather than synthetic tests. Will most people notice the difference in performance of this iPad compared to the 2017 iPad Pro? Probably not.

Apple has so many Low hanging fruits for ipad - external storage drive, mouse support for starters - really hope iOS 13 will fully make use of the wonderful hardware

Final Cut Pro, Xcode and full photoshop will also help.
But my guess is that we will see this magic with the second gen of these new iPads, launching in 2020 at wwdc.
I am really hoping for a more flexible OS by then, and some more pro like software/apps together with a ram bump for all models.
