Damn that’s disappointing. Glad i didn’t get one after all.

also others have reported issues with the size of the port so they are unable to add much to the USB C port.

@The Game 161 - Yeah, really disappointed. Feels like an unfinished product which is such a shame as I really do like the design overall.

Just glad I’m getting a refund. Is there even an alternative solution though?

You having to send it back?

Sadly no I’ve yet to see any other option out there

@The Game 161 - I’ve not been asked to no, but they’ve not processed my refund either so we’ll see!

Yes, it’s a shame. Just now I’m happy using it all around the house but really would like some extra outer edge protection and somewhere to store the Pencil when I can start moving out and about more?

Yeah the storage of the pencil is my issue...want to keep it on the top but can’t currently

Just spotted this (fairly honest) review on YouTube. He is using the case that’s only compatible with Smart Keyboard rather than Magic Keyboard but does again show all the problems (too small USB-C cutout, case not closing etc):

How long should I wait to request a refund? Mine shipped April 16th and haven’t had any movement at all. I get there’s a virus but its almost 2 months.

Hi, I’m new to the forums but wanted to post about the SwitchEasy coverbuddy. I preordered the coverbuddy iPad Pro 12.9 2020 version specifically for the magic keyboard on May 17th and received my package today on June 3rd. I read that the previous model had issues with closure when held at the spine but I’m happy to say that the new model solves this issue and the fit is quite perfect. Just a few points...

1) A glass screen protector WILL NOT work. I had to remove mine in order for the magic keyboard cover to close properly.
2) I had a Dbrand skin installed on my iPad and it surprisingly still worked with the magic keyboard and the coverbuddy installed. It did not affect the functionality of the keyboard. I ended up taking the skin off anyways just because I felt like it was an uncomfortably tight fit for the coverbuddy.
3) The cutout for the USB-C is very, very small and I can imagine that it would be difficult for anyone that would need to attach a 3rd party dongle. Not too much of an issue for me since I don’t use a dongle often but for those who do, you may have to take off the coverbuddy every time you need to connect the dongle.
4) Pass through charging still works.

That’s all! Happy to answer any questions!

Hey dude,

I have both versions of the CoverBuddy and I can guarantee you that your CoverBuddy is a piece of crap, just like my one.

It has no magnets.

Perform this test:

• Does the case stick onto the keyboard without the iPad? If it does then your case is good and strong enough to work.

• With everything installed hold the iPad upside down and shake it. If it falls off the keyboard then it’s defective.

• Do the same test above but without the case installed. If you shake it and the iPad doesn’t fall off then this proves your case is flimsy.

Please let us know how this works for you because if you legitimately have a good case I will get mine replaced.

Thanks.

Great! Anyway you can snap a picture? I’d appreciate it. Thanks!
Sure this is with the 11” cover buddy from amazon purchased 2 weeks ago. With the amfilm glass screen protector, there is some space when holding by spine.

@ChefYourNan - I’ve had it confirmed by SwitchEasy that the new 12.9” version (compatible with the Magic Keyboard) has NO magnets contained in it due to the thin nature. Only the 11” version does.

If that’s the case then it is definitely not fit for purpose. It needs to be thinner for the magnets of the iPad to work properly or it needs its own magnets but if they can’t do that then that’s unfortunate.

I will wait for @LTS418’s response because maybe my case was too thick and there’s some sort of manufacturing issues causing variances.

Either way, very poor job by SwitchEasy. They should’ve tested them properly.

I have the same issue like yours. Clearly there is no magnet at all inside the thin CoverBuddy case.
It auto-detaches itself from the Magickeyboard when I try to close it by pulling down the top-hinge (the top part that enclose the pencil). Have you tried this method to close your iPad Pro + Magickeyboard + CoverBuddy?
Have you experienced the same issue?

One more thing that i noticed is that, when it is in closed position, there is no gap at the front-end (top and bottom) however there is a gap at the middle part of the case that caused slight bump.
Because of this gap, the smart connector's pin of the CoverBuddy doesn't connect with the smart connector's pin of the Magickeyboard.
I have to press that section in order to connect both when it's in closed position.
How do I know when both smart connector pins are connected when it's in closed position, is when there is a "charging sound" when you power up thru Magickeyboard's USB-C port.
Have you experienced the same issue?

Will you get the full refund?

@princevalentines - I owned both of the recent 12.9” CoverBuddy models for 2020 iPads.

I had the exact same issues as you with the newest model (see my post further up), the case pops off due to NO magnets whenever it is closed at all.

I have requested a full refund.

I think i will just settle with my Apple Pencil sleeve so when i don’t use it i just leave it in there...my main need for the coverbuddy would be a place for the Apple Pencil.

I tried warning folks about this product being cheap garbage. Company also gives out bad support. Don’t bother giving them your money. Wait for an alternative.

I kept the original CoverBuddy but I’m requesting a refund on the newer one as it’s defective.

They said to me in the email that they are expecting to fix it for the third time. I cannot wait so I’ll just make do with the original and i’ll get my money back.

Neither closed properly with a screen protector but my original one actually was really well made, it had no issues with the magic keyboard until I needed to put a screen protector on it.

I’ll probably buy the newer version once if they put magnets on it, seems like you really need the magnets as the newer version didn’t have it.

There’s no way they can mess it up again.

Same here really!

Not sure how they’re going to fix it with a 3rd version as it’s too thin currently to house the magnets?

I received mine (12.9 magic keyboard only version) yesterday and I have the same issues like small cut out for USB C and because it doesn’t have magnets its super easy to pop out the iPad from the keyboard. So I told guys from switcheasy that I don’t want a refund but need a good working case and they replied (in 10 min) that in early July they will send me an improved version free of charge plus I can keep the existing case. Awesome!

I'm still baffled as to why some company hasn't made a protector JUST for the edges yet. Like something you can just snap into place around the entire perimeter of the iPad, kind of along the lines of the old Bumper Case Apple made for the iPhone 4 back in 2010. It doesn't have to be thick rubber like that--think more like a CoverBuddy without the back part. I don't even care about the Pencil holder necessarily.

Right now, I have a skin on the back, edges, and camera housing of my iPad Pro, and that is 100% fine and does its job, but I'd love to have something less permanent than that. It just needs to not interfere in any way with the functionality of the Magic Keyboard.

Agreed with this. I’d totally welcome a bumper. Any product designers in here that are willing to design it and get the product manufactured and sold to us? ;-)

Noticed today that the description on Switcheasy.com has changed to:

”2020 CoverBuddy

CoverBuddy protective case for iPad Pro 12.9" (2020) (Ship around early July)”

So, this effectively means that the 2nd version of the 12.9” is officially defective I would say as they’re not currently shipping any version for 12.9” with Magic Keyboard?

What a mess. I’d have to guess that the only way they have to “fix” this problem is to make the plastic thinner and thinner and thinner with each revision. At this point, I would barely count it as any kind of protection for the iPad.
