Look I agree the guy is a miserable human being, and I totally find his bashing others pathetic and reflective of his own shortcomings, but he does point out one of the issues with iPadOS. It could just be Microsoft or iPadOS but an example I have is how terrible the experience is using the Office apps on my iPad with Magic Keyboard vs just hopping on my Mac. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve said many times if I wasn’t in school my iPad would be my only computer. I just think iPadOS is way too restrictive considering the hardware Apple has been delivering.

He isn’t even trying to open a Word file in Word, try doing the same without installing Word on your Mac, you will have similar results. If you are going to make an example of “how iPads are restrictive“ don’t make a situation up that is only restrictive due to user error.

As for Office, it is a terrible experience and unusable for anything more than light use even on a Mac so it isn’t surprising that it is terrible on iPad OS as well. Office needs Windows to function fully.

LOL he doesn't even seem to know you can use Word to export Word Doc as PDF, I do it all the time on my iPhone ? No let me use 20x more steps and 10 browsers to do it, such a smart guy.
Considering his only purpose in exporting to PDF was so he could edit it, why not just open it in Word and edit?

The complaints related to the OS are just him trolling, like exporting the note instead of taking a screenshot.
Other complaints are related to Google (and Microsoft for the posts here) deliberately offering poor apps on iPad to promote their own devices.

when he says you can’t annotate a document or webpage… am I missing something here?

you can press the markup button in Safari for a webpage and there’s a markup button in Photos app, Notes app, and Files app

Consumers need more honest reviews like this and less hype and BS.

which is why (despite the admittedly “clickbait-y” titles and thumbnails) i much prefer LTT’s review on Apple products. people say he’s an “apple hater”, but Linus et. al really do see the positives AND negatives of Apple products/services. the fact that he’s a CUSTOMER of Apple shows that he isn‘t a hater for haters sake and that he does see value in Apple’s technologies, despite whether he may agree with their business practices or not. on top of all that, he puts it in a format where the information is easily digestible and entertaining.

and this is from someone who is NOT part of his viewership demographic (i dont own a PC/windows machine, have any interest in building one, or do any gaming whatsoever).

coming back to the original video: this wasn’t a ‘review’. this was a rant for rant/hate sake. one can be critical about a product without having to come off a pompous and disingenuous.

Word doesnt come preinstalled on Windows (has this changed?), and god knows how do you even approach signing a PDF in Windows, which also doesn't include a PDF viewer last time I checked. Actually, this whole process can be as much or more frustrating on ______ fill in your choosen platform.

iPadOS is an attempt to remake the computing experience, it can feel obtrusive if you're used to a certain platform, but this works both ways I must say. He could have done the whole thing in 2 or 3 steps (Edit in word -> save as PDF -> Sign with Apple Pencil), if he were sent the contract in proper PDF, it can be done in one less step. And you just have to learn how to do this once.

Now how exactly is this process easier in MacOS or Windows?

I think Office comes pre-installed now. It's just limited to viewing until you provide a license/registration key.

Edge, I believe, is the built-in PDF viewer. You probably still need Acrobat for signing.

With that said, yeah, converting/printing to PDF is easy enough on the iPad and it's my favorite platform for PDF annotations.

Word does not come preinstalled anywhere except as a trial. I use Office365 extensively on a Win10 desktop and laptop but very little on my iPad Pro due to its limitations in functionality. As for signing a PDF on Windows - Google it, there are a lot of solutions available.

I don't need to sign a PDF on Windows, I'm just pointing out that this guy instead of googling how to best do it decided to record, edit and publish a video because money.

How does making up a problem that doesn’t exist on the iPad demonstrate why iPad OS needs an overhaul? Like him trying to open a .docx without using Word.
I don’t think it needs a demonstration. If iPadOS wants to be a real solid OS it does need a lot of improvement. Right now it’s really just tweaked iOS. Don’t get me wrong the iPad is awesome. I love mine, but iPadOS needs an update, and I would guess we’re going to get that at wwdc.

He does have a chip on his shoulder, but I’ve been through some of those frustrations which continue to make the MBP needed.

I upgraded to a 2020 12.9” 128GB iPP because for my usage it’s all I need. I just hope that iPadOS 15 makes it more useable for working with text.
I agree, that working with files is a challenge on iPad. They resisted for so long to have even a basic user accessible file system, which now does exist, but a lot of apps simply don't make good use of it or not at all, and like he described manipulating and editing files between different apps or even web sites is a nightmare. Options that exist in 99% of software in a standard menu structure just don't exist in iPad apps or are buried, there is no consistency.

I don't need horsepower I still have a 2017 iPad Pro, works fine for my needs, mostly light browsing & streaming video.

But the fact remains, that the M1 iPad Pro runs the same iPad OS as the base level iPad/iPad mini, with the same limitations.

I too hope that there is something there for iPad OS at WWDC. If you're gonna make a iPad "PRO", make the OS more PRO.

Didn't watch the vid, but everytime I read/hear someone dissing a product as trash it tells me more about the reviewer than the product. Doesn't suit my needs, trash. Doesn't have the features I desire, trash. Doesn't do what *I* expect it to do, trash. And so on and so forth.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Just from the title, I know it's not worth watching.

If it had a fair title, I would watch but stop if it turns into a bitchfest. If you're gonna review a product, be honest and be fair. A feature you might not be useful to you might be a godsend to someone else.

I’d rather watch YTers with filming/editing skills for early reviews.
That's how we got here. All about filming and editing, having the "tech reviewer" RGB setup, and the same generic "tech reviewer" music.

Even the ones I used to like now offer to little for insight that there's just no point in watching. I don't need to watch someone read the spec sheet and marketing material, spending half their time unboxing and the other half talking about how they feel about the color scheme. The whole business is phony to the core now, sadly.

I feel MacOS is coming to iPad Pro but it's not fully baked yet. It's something Apple has to do to compete with other devices on the market and stay relevant. iPadOS is just too dumbed down with training wheels. WWDC release sounds about right since iPadOS apps are already running on M1 Macbooks minus touch and pen inputs which the M1 iPad Pro has.

Oh noes, tech youtuber is attacking the reality distortion field!

Quick, find whatever argument you can, attack his attitude whatever, we need to keep the distortion field active!

Seriously, it's a valid experience, most casual users I've seen with iPads go through the same challenges. A ton of stuff is dumbed down trying to improve user experience and actually ends up hurting it.

I watched the video (while on a zoom call for work - lol) and it was about what I expected. Clicky-bait aside, the basic gist that the iPad is held back by iOS and apps is not untrue. I can't tell if the guy simply did not know how to use most of the apps he was demoing or if he was being deliberately obtuse to make it look worse than it is (likely) but that was definitely painful.

iPad Pro hardware is amazing. The OS isn’t trash, but holds back the usefulness of the tablet itself a TON. The original concept of the iPad, from how Jobs demo’d it was a content consumption device with light productivity.

Apples “your next computer” iPad campaign last year intrigued me. I sold my 2019 MB Pro and tried to make the pencil/Mk combo work. I tried for a good 6 months and became as efficient as I could be with it, but a lot less than if I were to just use a MacBook. Today my 2020 Pro is in use by my wife and I got a new MacBook. Her use cases are fine with a iPad but for me, no dice.

The iPad isn’t trash, you just have to be realistic on what you intend to do with it. It’s an excellent tablet and a below average laptop. While the surface is a below average tablet and a good laptop. It’s about the software.
