Sorry I hurt your feelings when I called it a glorified iPhone.
Actually it is most likely not about “hurt” but standing in bewildered awe in the presence of your lack of knowledge/ignorance in relation to iPads and and iPadOS.

you can of course still “glorify” it… your choice. ? its personal, we know. ?

Sorry I hurt your feelings when I called it a glorified iPhone.

I do get where you're coming from, though. I've posted this elsewhere on the forum but I'll re-post it here regarding my own issues with iPad shortcomings -

I have a 2018 12.9 iPad Pro and a 16GB i7 Surface Pro 7. The iPad is very much a superior tablet but it also can't do things the SP7 can. If I had to choose to keep just one device, it would be the SP7 because I can live with the inferior tablet experience but not the loss of functionality I have with the iPad. For me, I see them as complementary devices. Some reasons why I would keep the SP7 over the iPad –
  • Proper external monitor support
  • Better multi-tasking
  • Full Office 365 functionality
  • Better memory mgmt. (e.g., Safari tabs reloading on iPad)
  • Ability to connect to and update other devices via USB
  • Ability to format external drives
  • SP7 has a landscape-centered front camera and supports a webcam
  • Ability to add to music library with other than iTunes or music store
  • Floating windows
  • Browser extension support
  • Better file management
  • Ability to designate default apps for file types
  • 16GB RAM without having to buy 1TB or more on-board storage
Used with a 4K monitor, USB-C hub, and Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, my SP7 has replaced my desktop but I can still use it as a lightweight laptop.

I ran into a workflow issue today on my pro from trying to copy and paste an attachment from an email into a new email. Was a nightmare. Things like this should not be that difficult. The video raises some good points.

I had to Google search how to do that too. How freaking hard is it to put an attachment icon like on any other email client? That's why I hate apps and prefer a full desktop browser. And, no, iPadOS doesn't qualify.

Proper external monitor support
I am with you regarding the “extended desktop scenario” running e.g. 2 apps simultaneously. Otherwise - regarding presentations or video projections it is already there of course.
  • Better multi-tasking
referring to what usage scenario exactly?
  • Full Office 365 functionality
”Dear Microsoft, I am writing to you today because I have an issue with your programs…”
  • Better memory mgmt. (e.g., Safari tabs reloading on iPad)
Besides personal habits to keep lots of tabs open at a time, “dear designer of insert-website-with-reload, I am writing to you today because I have an issue with the way you implemented certain aspects of your webpage…”
  • Ability to connect to and update other devices via USB
? I am curious, to what exactly are you referring? If there is one thing about the USB-iPads, it’s that with the right hub and FileBrowser Professional there is almost no limit… please expand.
  • Ability to format external drives
All external media I use, I use between an iPP and some other device (e.g. SD cards with a camera) which does this - if needed. I personally give this a 10 on the convinience scale, but only a 2.5 on the “iPadOS should improve in this area”. … I know, it’s personal. ?
  • SP7 has a landscape-centered front camera and supports a webcam
your point? My fridge has a webcam. Written that it works only in “portrait”. So?
  • Ability to add to music library with other than iTunes or music store
oh yeah!
  • Floating windows
you have ever run 3 floating app windows on an iPP. Maybe it’s great on a 12.9”. I use an 11” and prefer 2 apps in splitview + PiP.
  • Browser extension support
what’s wrong with the current implementation?
  • Better file management
there is an app for that.

  • Ability to designate default apps for file types
Again, an annoyance on the convenience scale, I agree.
  • 16GB RAM without having to buy 1TB or more on-board storage

Well, same here - no external monitor so, because, well… while being in northern scandinavias ”outback” chasing the Aurora borealis - confident to run “a tat” longer from battery while processing images much faster than using a SP7 ??

Two things that someone might’ve already mentioned, but just in case…

1) He apparently has Pages installed, which will open the Word doc,

2) If you can print, you can make a PDF by simply expanding the preview to full screen and saving as PDF (which is not obvious if you don’t know this trick, but this guy is supposed to be “technically inclined”).

I only post these because I really don’t want to read through all the comments.

We each have our own preferences, these are mine and why if I had to keep only one device, I would keep the Surface.

I have already espoused the great values of FileBrowser elsewhere and I have lots of hubs - I have devices that require firmware and/or data updates over USB.

Multiple floating app windows? I'd do that with a monitor except for that little monitor issue.

I wasn't in Scandinavia chasing the Aurora but not long ago I was North of the Arctic Circle. External battery packs worked well with the iPad and the Surface.

True. I've forgotten these came pre-installed on iPads now so anyone with a new iPad should be able to open Word documents. Numbers will work with Excel files and that's pre-installed, too.

I think we can both agree that there is almost always a way to solve the problem at hand. Under the premise “if you have to use one single device only to do everything you need” if the SP7 is it, good for you. Battery life is not even close though. Or single/multicore performance. Or the display. ?

It is a privilege if you don’t have to compromise a.k.a. having access to more then a single device. Written that, the 12.9” M1 iPPs is for certain application scenarios the much better choice than the SP7.

And then you fire up VisualStudio on your SP7 and I am the one who has to start writing: “Dear Tim Apple, I am writing to you today because I have an issue with your…” ??

I have yet to run into a battery shortfall in either my iPP or SP7 or a performance issue on the SP7 (I have the 16GB i7). My heaviest lifting on it is 4K video editing in Premiere Pro. I had already read Mann's piece and I have found I prefer using the SP7 for Lightroom - I've used it for years for all of my RAW editing. I rarely do field editing other than culling anymore - I prefer the use of a large 4K monitor with mouse & keyboard.

Doesn't make economic nor practical sense to develop two different apps when you can focus energy and resources on one. Plus, limitations that are iPadOS imposed can't be fixed with app only.
They aren’t two different apps. They’re the same app just like the iPad apps that run on Mac OS.

I don't think that guy had anything to do with data mining or whatever.

Hey for one we don’t know if he ever was employed or if he’s an actual engineer it’s just a claim at this stage. And B, it’s a matter of principle, those are the business models these companies make money of.
