Pretty shady - you hit the nail on the head: normal wear and tear is bending some of these suckers. Check this thread for the guy whose screen is likely to pop, the bending is so bad. People who are treating these devices like rare archaeological finds are nonetheless documenting their kit deteriorating over time. Utterly unacceptable

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who’s very rarely wrong. In fact he almost always gets it right

He also reckons on a 10.2” entry model appearing this year, which sounds pretty neat

Like Business Insider says, if you've heard a rumor about an unreleased Apple product in the past five years, there's a good chance it came from Ming-Chi Kuo

https://appleinsider.com/articles/1...ros-a-new-ipad-mini-a-new-ceramic-apple-watch

The article you linked, talks about possibly updating iPad Pro's with updated processors. nothing about "fixing the chassis". I would place money, based on Apples timeline of past iPad Pro updates, that this article will prove to be wrong in time. It's interesting to me that the loudest voices in this thread are people who have brand new or fairly new accounts on Macrumors. Maybe it means nothing, but it almost always implies something. One of the loudest posters on this issue has even posted in other threads about ordering a new iPad Pro even though they have and continue to post about how awful this new iPad Pro is. All very interesting.

To anyone reading through this thread, I would simply say that some of the loudest voices on this issue of "bending iPad Pro's" don't even own one of the iPad Pro's that they profess to be knowledgeable about. I would take their posts with a grain of salt. There are literally millions of people who have purchased the new iPad Pro's and haven't and never will experience any bending with their device as opposed to a few people on the internet who post over and over again about a device they don't even own. I'll bow out of this thread now because I'm not gonna debate a subject about a device with people that don't even own the device. I'll do like the millions who have purchased one and have no issues with it and just enjoy it while others (who don't own one) post over and over again about how bad the device is that they don't own.

There’s zero percent chance Apple will miss the opportunity to fix a problem that even they acknowledge. The 2019 Pro will come with a fixed chasis

Agreed. Never mind four months, just imagine how these devices will look in four years! As you say, the engineering - patently the weak chasis - is just not fit for purpose in what should be a workhorse product

- everygrainofsand -

4 years? Most of these will be snapped in half before 2

I wouldn’t necessarily say he is rarely wrong. His product roadmaps are generally accurate, but often miss key details on timing and product features. Here are a few examples I can think of off the top of my head:
  • iMac fall 2018 updates - didn’t happen
  • AirPower - has revised his launch timeframe multiple times
  • Apple Watch - believed watch would actually go on sale in fall 2014. Didn’t happen until April 2015.
While I’m hopeful for an updated pro model this fall, I’m not counting on it.

Lol. cast128.
They changed the aluminum from Iphone 6 in his iphone 6s.
that's the only argument you need for think about the possibility of changing the poorly quality aluminum

Putting my iPad in my totebag for a two-day event, shoved three takeaway boxes inside (was smuggling food), swung it around the event, and had things lied on top of it. I thought the iPad would have bent, looked like it was the case when I held it at an angle but it’s flat on the flat surface so I might be imagining things or the ipad is really that flexible the gravity pulled the bent part and made it flat again lol I do use the ASK folio all the time though...

This. I wonder if the irony is lost on Apple when the CHASSIS of a tablet wears out far faster than the innards?

Hold off until the fall for the updated Pro (yes, already). They’ll fix the chasis, and the bending issue will go away. At least for those that buy the updated device

They may introduce new colors or sizes (doubt it, but hey). If their numbers tell them a lot of these are bending (and only they know, forums are heavily skewed) they may even quietly tweak the internernal structure, like change some material or manufacturing or something.

But announcing a new iPad Pro, as in A13-powered iPad Pro, not very likely. Certainly not because of “bending”. If they do announce a new iPad Pro it will be because they have a new chip ready for it and some new features that they think will sell, which is unlikely this year, based on the recent upgrade cycles.

The fact they put their most advanced chip generation in this iPad Pro (which was not the case with previous Pros) tells me this one is meant to last a while, most likely until 2020.

I fully expect the vast majority of 2018 iPad Pros to be fully functional in the next four years.

Sure, they improve things all the time. They didn’t upgrade the iPhone 6 sooner because of bendgate and most of iPhones 6 were and still are fine. iPhone 6 was one of the great iPhones and tech history will remember it kindly.

I’m a late contributor to this thread but I just wanted to check in with this issue and see how wide spread it still is?

I’ve actually held off buying one because of it.

I desperately need to buy an iPad for personal and work related use and this pro model is perfect for what I need it for.

I haven’t owned an iPad since my iPad 2 finally died about a 2 years ago.

It's way overblown. I suggest, if you need an iPad... grab one of the new ones. People forget, anything can bend, all iPads after iPad 4 went through some odd Apple forum #BendGate but it was the small percentage of people being loud (and was on sites like this or Apple user forums.) There were not any major headlines of bent iPads. The "news" stories regarding these iPads aren't based on a tech site or major news outlet getting a bent iPad themselves, they link to twitter posts or even this forum to create a story of "bent iPads."
So what you are reading about is the 00.1% saying all this, not the 99.9% of people who actually have great iPads.
Just like anything made of any metal... there will be rare incidents of bending (in regular physics situations.) But in general these claims that all 2018 iPPs are bent or come bent are not all accurate. It is possible of course... but a highly, highly improbable and unlikely scenario.

Kallum.

I picked up an open box 11” model at BestBuy, it’s perfectly flat. Put it in a Speck case that has a rigid plastic back cover that also covers the corners. I travel often with it in an overstuffed backpack full of tools. This combo seems very robust, i’m not worried.

The vast majority of new iPad Pro owners have not bent their iPads. Literally millions of people.

I was concerned at first also. Me, my wife, and several of my friends and co-workers own them and all are perfectly flat.

Buy one if you want one and you will love the device. It’s an awesome iPad.

Today I received my third iPad Pro 3rd gen. It is not bent, and it is as straight as iPads can get. You shouldn’t worry about getting a bent iPad in 12.9 or 11”.

great to hear thanks i had an 11 which was flat as a pancake but returned because i want to get the 12

trying to hang on until the refurbs maybe

Yes, some of these iPads bend and I believe it’s because of the type of Aluminum that apple uses to make them combined with how thin and big these things are. I’ve had my 12.9 for two days and can already see a curve in the lower top side. I really enjoy the iPad and I also need it for uni, so I’m thinking that I’ll get Apple Care+ just to have a piece of mind...I’m not going overly crazy over this but I can honestly see why people would. Also fun fact, I checked my older iPad Pro (1stgen I think) and its slightly bend too, I just never noticed. Apple just needs to be less greedy when it comes to some of their products, the iPhone, especially the stainless steel one and the Apple Watches are so durable, I haven’t seen almost any wear on mine since I had them.

i priced out a 256GB 12.9 here in canada, i always buy applecare and that puts me out the door at a few dollars shy of $1800

yeah, i want an ipad that doesn’t bend ...

I just got a 12.9, having sold my old 12.9 and 10.5 (yeah, I know). This thing is built like a tank! It is the wifi model, but I've been carrying it around in a rucksack and treating it like my old ones and no sign of a bend yet. I think the combination of reduced bezels and weight make this the best iPad I've ever had. Being able to plug my usb c hub into it to use my audio interface is a massive plus over the old lightning connection.

I’ll be getting one within the next two weeks. Think I’ll even open it up inside the Apple Store just to be safe. I’m not paying $2k+ (Aus) in total and taking it home to find it’s bent, that’s bull.

But, like everyone has been saying. It’s another #Bendgate that’s been blown out of proportion. I had the iPhone 6 Plus for about two years, no issues or bending. Funny thing is my iPhone 7 Plus had a slight bent in it after about half a years worth of use.

Anyone afraid of buying a brand new iPad because your worried about getting a bent 12.9 or 11” iPad is just nonsense. I would take caution buying a used one though, unless you can see it or touch it. The bend is common by user accidents mostly. They are 5.9mm thin, take caution to not sit on it and you will be fine.

Also, pick your screen protector carefully as most have touch issues once installed.

i pretty much try to deal with that issue via getting applecare and then when it expires put the screen protector on, though sheesh, in two years the thing will be obsolete :)

I just want to post a little update after a few weeks of use, my iPad 12.9 looked like it started to bend (less than a millimeter), but now I don't see it going further. So for me looks that the normal use doesn't bend the iPad at all. I quite abused it and stills looks the same when bought. Using the Apple case, not the smart keyboard, here.

So my recommendation is to buy it and don't worry about bending too much.
