It is jarring at first, you have to remind yourself that this is not a desktop. The weakness is there is no such thing as a hover.

We need to treat mouse input as an extension of our finger, and I think once the muscle memory is developed (using the mouse to swipe from the edge, or to drag the dock instead of hover) it is not really different from a desktop mouse.

Plus I think where the mouse lacks, the brevity of keyboard shortcuts can compensate, especially in text editing. Keyboard shortcuts are more than enough to get you writing well on the iPad, except if you want to place the cursor exactly where you want without touching the screen. That is where the mouse really helps.

How did you get it to work? My Smart Keyboard is not working consistently when a Bluetooth mouse is activated via Assisttive Touch....one of the other works but not at the same time.

I have the show on screen keyboard and always show menu toggle turned off.. Then it works.

It is actually different. Mouse on desktop always meant to be precise input, where you can drag and select or point with precision. On iPad, mouse is different. It not meant to be precise input, but rather just an extension of our fat fingers. No where near precise and it feel very awkward.

The Microsoft Arc Mouse works great when you get the USB C to A adapter for the mouse. I’m blown away by how great it is to have a mouse with the iPad. Its soooo much better.

I installed public beta iPadOS in my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9.

Why it cannot connect to apple trackpad as a mouse?

Anyone tried to connect to trackpad before?

I tried both my (1st gen) Magic Trackpad and (1st gen) Magic Mouse.

iPadOS could detect the Magic Mouse in pairing mode, but still fails to pair.

It couldn’t even detect the Magic Trackpad at all.

Magic track 2 connects and works via USB C to lightening to 3rd generation iPad Pro.

I heard that Magic Mouse 2 was a problem with the latest versions of iPad OS, and that Magic Mouse 1 worked. However, my Magic Mouse 1 didn't show up in the regular Bluetooth settings. After I turned on Assistive Touch then I paired it from the Bluetooth settings there. Then my Magic Mouse 1 paired fine with my iPad Pro 10.5 and works.

However, the default tracking is way too fast for some reason. The default tracking for my old nipple Apple mouse is perfect. The tracking speed can be adjusted though. The part I don't need is that Assistive Touch icon that stays on screen all the time. It's annoying if you don't need it, so I turn down its opacity to 15% which makes it less obvious. I wish I could adjust the mouse pointer too. I understand why it's so large, but it's unnecessarily large for mainstream users.

Also, scroll does not work in Safari. And even where it works, it doesn't work in the direction I like. I use the reverse direction like Macs 5 years ago, but on iPad OS it can't be reversed. Hopefully this is added later.

However, this is all moot for me because the only place I really need it is for my Citrix VPN software to log into my computer at work. However, that software doesn't work at all for me on iPadOS 13. Works fine in iOS 12.

The good news is that the Apple nipple mouse (wired) doesn't require external power to run (via my Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter).

There is an option to remove that icon (always show menu)

Have you tried Magic Trackpad 2 via Assistive Touch's Bluetooth settings?

If you take an iPad, then add a physical keyboard, and then add a mouse, it’s a laptop, isn’t it.

So what’s the big deal.

For me, I use the iPad on the road (literally as I commute to work by Bus) as just the iPad. But when I'm doing work from a desk I can have all the desktop "things" as well. Much harder to find a laptop where you can leave the keyboard behind. I did look at a Surface Book 2 for a bit, but you could buy two iPadPro 12.9 for the same price...

So "for me" the big deal is that I am able to use just as much of what I have as I need at the time. On a longish ride, not having the extra couple pounds in my lap is a big deal.

Anyone tried to pair magic trackpad 2 via Bluetooth with beta 3?

Doesn't work

So is there a Bluetooth mouse that can be used that requires no dongle or receiver to be plugged into the iPad? Or do they all require something sticking out the side of the iPad? Thanks in advance!

Bluetooth mice work. eg. Apple Magic Mouse 1.
Thank you. Now that sounds like something I would actually use. I’m not going on the beta and will wait for the actual release of iOS 13 this fall, and I just went by comments about dongles and receivers etc.

It’s exciting to think that even though clunky at the moment, we actually have the ability to use a mouse on our iPads! Give us a mouse pointer (common Apple, don’t be so stubborn and treat us like children) and more options in the settings by release time and we’ll be happy!

FWIW, there are different sizes for the mouse pointer now.

Finally picked up a cheap BT mouse to try this out, since my MM2 or Magic Trackpad aren’t working with this. So far I love it. I do wish I could invert the scrolling and change scroll speeds, but outside of that it is really great. It plus using a PS4 controller for games, really makes this feel like a great portable game/work system now.
